Kathryn Grace (Kate) Bosher, of Evanston, IL, born on September 15, 1974, in Toronto, Ontario, died on March 23, 2013 after a battle with cancer. The beloved wife of LaDale Winling; mother of Ernest Winling; daughter of John Bosher and K. Cecil (Berry) Bosher; sister of Hal, Sylvie, and Lise Bosher. Having been inspired by a Latin teacher at Branksome Hall and travel through Greece in her youth, Kate studied Classics at the University of Toronto, earning a BA, followed by an MA while a fellow at Massey College and a Ph.D. in Classics at the University of Michigan. She researched the ancient origins of comedy in Sicily and Southern Italy and traveled to nearly every known excavated theater in Sicily. In 2006, she joined the faculty of Classics at Northwestern University where she taught Greek and Latin courses and recently published an edited volume on theater in the ancient Greek world outside of Athens. As a teen, Kate rowed with Canada's junior national rowing team, participating in the 1991 World Junior Championships in Barcelona, Spain. A competitive sculler in graduate school, she won the Royal Canadian Henley championship women's single scull and the women's elite single scull at the U.S. Rowing National Championship Regatta in 2004. Visitation Thursday, March 28th, from 3 to 8 p.m., at HABEN Funeral Home & Crematory, 8057 Niles Center Rd., Skokie. Lying-in-state Friday, March 29th, from 2 p.m. until time of Funeral Service, 3 p.m., at Alice Millar Chapel, Northwestern University, 1870 Sheridan Rd., Evanston. Interment private. A Memorial Service in Ennismore, Ontario will be held in early May. In lieu of flowers, please make donations in Kathryn Bosher's name to the University of Michigan, 2160 Angell Hall, 435 S. As a youngster I used to play with Kate and Hal at the Bosher home in Toronto. Though we had been out of touch for many years, when I heard of her passing, I was deeply shaken. Together with Hal, we would build tree houses, adventure in the ravine behind our homes, forage for watercress and host garden tea parties for the adults. In the Winter, she would read to us before a roaring fireplace. Every time I revisit Alice and Wonderland, I can hear her serene and caring voice.
When we met by chance at the U. of Toronto some twenty years later, she was as bright and optimistic as ever, as if the world had not touched her. An unfazed goodness. Kate taught me reading, grammar, fairness and many other things, and even at age Ten, she was a natural. Clearly, she kept it up.
I'm sorry that I am late to this forum, but glad to have found it. I can see that Kate touched many lives and that her passions were actualised.
She formally presented me a silver horse figurine when I was Seven. Kate was my first love. I was so fortunate to have known her, even if for a short time.

Kate Bosher to be remembered Saturday morning at Bandemer Park, Lakeshore Drive, Ann Arbor MI 48104
A sculling boat will be named after Kate in a ceremony at 7:25am at the rowing dock near Lakeshore Drive. The Michigan Club Invitational regatta will take place following the ceremony.

The Womens Open Single Sculling race (10:55AM) has been named in honor of Kate starting this year. All friends of Kate Bosher are welcome to join us during these events.

This truly is a heartbreak. I used to babysit for Ernest, and the hours I spent with him in Kate and Dale's home were some of the most calming, pleasant hours of my summer. Kate greeted me every morning with a sincere smile and a fresh coffee in a tiny, delicate cup. We'd chat briefly about life, Ernest's latest "thing," my schoolwork, her schoolwork, the recent NPR piece, etc. This is a tragic loss. Kate surely had an impact on me, as it seems she impacted everyone she came across. She will be missed.

This is such heartbreaking news. Kate was one of the most genuine, kind, and thoughtful people to grace this earth. What always struck me about Kate is that she consciously took time to enjoy the present moment. I remember many a conversation concerning her great pleasure in good tea served in one of her delicate china cups. Every time I drink tea out of anything fancier than a standard mug, I think of Kate. When you talked with Kate she actually listened to what you had to say, asked several intelligent and insightful questions, and upon later visits remembered some nugget of that conversation. The world was a better place with her in it, and I will miss her dearly. My sincerest condolences to Dale, Ernest, Sammy, and all of Kate's family.

I was a student of Professor Bosher's at Northwestern. I will never forget her Classics and the Cinema course. I took such copious notes during lectures because everything Professor Bosher said was brilliant. She was an inspiration to me as a young Classicist. I am so deeply saddened by her loss.
