I can’t believe it’s been nearly five months since we lost Wayne. My reluctance to say goodbye is represented by this long delayed, but fond memory of Wayne.
He and I spent a lot of time sharing our lives with one another over many cups of coffee on Sunday after mass. He loved to talk about his children Price, Wally, and Michele, and Carol, the love of his life. And his Mom, his brother Fred working in NYC, growing up in Baltimore, his uncle who marched and played the glockenspiel, his time in Nebraska where he met Carol, and his experiences as a Navy pilot.
Wayne sincerely cared for others. His religious faith was real and honest. He honored me asking to be his sponsor when he went through the process of joining the Catholic faith. Trust me, he was the spiritual one.
Wayne said what he meant, and meant what he said - an honest man who respected the dignity of others. The world needs more men like Wayne Seim. We lost a person of humility, integrity, and compassion that meant a lot to me.
Rest In Peace shipmate.

Wayne (call sign “Beaver”) was my squadron-mate with VA-86 “Sidewinders” Home based at NAS Cecil Field in Jacksonville, FL. We carpooled together and become close friends, even visits with each other after retirement.
He had a marvelous sense of humor and playfulness, great to be around. We also shared an unusual trait, completely white hair and once, when together while refueling his car in Pensacola during a squadron reunion, we we questioned if we were brothers.
Wayne joins a fellow Sidewinder, Frank Staarup, recently deceased, so perhaps they are wingmen again. While both wore Navy wings of Gold, those have now been upgraded to white (matches his hair) for the rest of eternity.
