Joseph Jenkins Obituary

JOSEPH JENKINS, 74, died on April 15, 2009. Mr. Jenkins was born in Hernando, Mississippi and moved to Germantown, TN at an early age. He was a graduate of Mt. Pisgah High School. He was also a veteran of the United States Army. After being discharged from the army, he became the first African-American to work at the Memphis Auto Inspection Station from which he retired after working nearly 35 years. While at the inspection station, he rose to the rank of supervisor before his retirement. In addition, he was a member of Middle Baptist Church under the leadership of Reverend Lester Baskin. Mr. Jenkins was an usher at the church as well as having being a member of the male choir. Mr. Jenkins leaves a son, Ronald Jenkins of Atlanta, GA; step-daughters, Carol Joan and Sharon of Memphis, as well as a sister, Rosie Lee Stokes of Memphis, and a host of nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 18 at Middle Baptist Church, 801 Whitehaven Lane, Memphis, TN. Immediately following visitation will be the memorial service at 12 noon at Middle Baptist Church. Interment will be in the West Tennessee Veterans Cemetery. M.J.
