Martin Kernan Obituary

MARTIN HEALY KERNAN, 70, died December 31, 2008 after a courageous battle with cancer. Martin was an Electrical Engineer with Memphis Light, Gas, and Water Division for 42 years in underground network engineering. He was a dedicated employee who loved his work and his co-workers. He served as an aircraft electronic technician (3rd Class Petty Officer) in the U.S. Navy on the U.S.S. Oriskany. He was a communicant at the Church of the Nativity. Martin was the beloved husband of Barbara; father of Amanda Kernan Barton (Dr. Ben Barton); granddaddy of Anna Barton; brother of Fred Kernan; and uncle to three nieces, two nephews, two great-nephews, and a great-niece. He also leaves his mother-in-law, two sisters-in-law, and a brother-in-law. The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m., with a rosary at 7 p.m. Sunday, January 4 at Memphis Funeral Home Germantown Parkway Chapel. A funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, January 5 at the Church of the Nativity in Bartlett, TN, with interment to follow in Memphis Memory Gardens. Martin was a great man. I truly enjoyed visiting with Martin each time we passed in the halls at MLGW. His death was a shock to many of us as we prayed he would beat the return of his cancer. Our love and prayers go out to you the family as you meet the challenge of the days ahead.
