Samuel Somers Obituary

Samuel C. Somers, MD

Hopkinton, NH - Sam Somers embodied many qualities throughout his lifetime: positivity, intelligence, generosity, and, most abundantly, love. He was the most devoted father of three beloved daughters, cherished husband of Diane Hotten-Somers, GI physician at Concord Hospital, a soccer coach to many young people in his community, plus so much more. Anyone who had the pleasure of meeting Sam will recall his warm, embracing smile that conveyed and spread the joy that was at the center of Sam's soul, and what centered him in life.

Sam passed away suddenly of a heart attack at his home Sunday evening, February 26, 2023. He left his wife of 26 years, Diane Hotten-Somers, and his daughters Reese (19), Abigail (16), and Emma (14) - the absolute loves of his life.

Sam was born in Kansas City, MO, on June 23, 1969. Sam spent most of his childhood in Kansas, growing up with the adventures of both country and lake living, and then later moving to Edina, Minnesota, where he fostered his lifelong love of learning and playing hard. Sam graduated valedictorian from Edina High School and as a National Merit Scholar in 1988. He attended Dartmouth College, earning a B.A. in Asian Studies and graduating in 1992 summa cum laude and as a member of Phi Betta Kappa. Sam studied in Taiwan at Taipei University where he expanded his Mandarin skills. In the fall of 1994, Sam began his medical studies at Harvard Medical School, where he earned his MD in 1998. He then completed his Internal Medicine Residency at Brigham and Women's Hospital in 2001, and rounded out his formal training with a Gastroenterology Fellowship at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and received a Master's in Medical Science-Clinical Investigation from Harvard/MIT in 2004. Sam joined Concord Gastroenterology in 2005, and focused his practice on collaborating with his partners and, for the past 2 years, Concord Hospital Medical Group to develop a community based GI group that has provided expert, compassionate care for patients across the Granite State. His patients remember him as a kind, extremely knowledgeable and skilled physician who made them feel heard and supported. Sam found deep purpose and meaning caring for the thousands upon thousands of patients during his too short career. Sam also undertook GI research, publishing in many medical journals, and most recently collaborating with Iterative Health to test AI supported scopes. And always, Sam brought his bright smile to every exam room he entered, and made the academic and medical halls he walked a happier and more healing place.

Personally, Sam was pure joy, creating circles of love in all the communities he entered. Sam's family bonds and friendships were both plentiful and lifelong because everyone was drawn to his joyfulness for life. As a big brother, Sam will forever be adored by his sister, Sage, whom he comforted when they cared for their brother Spenser, and their mother, Karen during their respective illnesses. As a son, Sam cherished his father and their annual pheasant hunting trip to SD. As a friend, Sam developed strong bonds through his infectious laughter, comforting presence, ever-present smile, and his deep intellect, which led to many a long, philosophical discussion about the meaning of life and love. In recent years, Sam, who never played soccer himself, but wanted to support his daughters' love of the sport, found joy in coaching girls soccer. His players loved and respected Coach Sam because he set the bar high and was always there to support them with his effervescent encouragement. He was, simply, sunshine incarnate, and his rays of love will shine on through all of those he touched.

Above all, Sam loved and devoted his life to Di and their three daughters. After meeting and falling for Di on a June night in San Francisco, together they wrote a love story for the ages. That story was born in the city by the Bay, blossomed while in graduate school in Boston, and found its full, profound meaning in raising their daughters in Hopkinton, NH. Together, this merry band of Hotten-Somers traveled the world, directed by Sam's never-ending curiosity for life and cultures. Sam also instilled in his girls the love of the great outdoors and most winter weekends you would find him setting down fresh tracks at Cannon with his 3 rippers. During the summer and fall, Sam, Di, and the girls hiked the Whites, surfed the waves of the NH coast, and kayaked rivers and lakes. No matter the weather, Sam walked and meditated with his beloved dog, Kona, through the wooded trails in their hometown. Above all else, he loved watching his daughters play soccer, lacrosse, ski race, row, dance, and he inspired and supported them each to discover and nurture their intellectual passions. In the end, Sam loved Di more than anything, and she felt the same love for him. Together, they provided an example of devotion and unconditional love throughout their 30 year relationship. Sam is so loved by his family and his love for them shall never fade.

Sam is survived by his wife, Diane Hotten-Somers, his daughters, Reese, Abigail, and Emma, father John Somers, sister Sage (Gustafson), nephew Spenser (15), and nieces Margaret (13), and Hope (9). Sam is preceded in death by his mother Karen and brother Spenser. Sam will, inevitably, be remembered most for his sunny smile that was him sharing his love generously with everyone he met, and he will be missed forever.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations in Sam's name be made to the New Hampshire Soccer Association https://soccernh.com/, DB Teens, an association that supports mental health services for young people in New Hampshire - Venmo to: https://account.venmo.com/u/dbtforyou Or mail checks to DBT For You- 6 Main Street #397 - Newfields, NH 03856, or the Spenser Somers Foundation (spensersomers.org).

I have only recently learned of Dr. Somers passing and want to extend my deepest condolences to his family...as a patient of Dr. Somers, I truly understand each sentiment of his obituary...I actually looked forward to my "5 year meetings" with him, he always had a big smile and was indeed one of the smartest, kindest, and caring people I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. May he rest in peace and may the many fond memories he built with his loving family help them thru this very sad time.

I spent two trips in Taiwan with Sam - the 2nd at Stanford Center in Taipei - we were the only two people from Dartmouth. Hung out a lot that summer - very smart, hard-working and insightful guy. I am not surprised to reading in all these posts that he was a terrific doctor. Always wished we had stayed in touch. Very, very sorry to hear of this tragedy and best wishes to his family. I will try to find a photo of us in Taiwan together and post it.

I was so lucky to have experienced the love and warmth as a long time patient of Dr Somers. I always felt that I really mattered and he was always smiling and respectful. I cannot believe such a vibrant and loving soul has left us all way too soon. My sincere condolences to his family, who will be without the light in their lives. Hugs and love to them all. RIP Dr Somers.

Working with Sam would bring a smile to my face from the moment I saw the schedule, and all throughout the day. Great deep conversations, updates on the girls, the latest in patient care, but always time to inquire about my boys as well. I really miss him.

Dr Somers saved my life. I would like to tell you my story. At 53 years old I had an issue with bleeding going to the bathroom. I was referred to GI associates. Dr Somers did my first colonoscopy and found I inherited a genetic gene which caused me to have multiple colon polyps. There was one that was very large and he explained to me he was not able to say if it contained cancer. Dr Somers called me personally a few weeks later to tell me he had some news to tell me that might be a bit scary. His voice was so calm and soft. He continued to explain that I was so fortunate that the cancer in the large polyp he was removed appeared to be contained in the polyp itself. However he wanted to be sure. He ordered other tests for me so he could make sure he was right. My test came out negative. My husband and I met with Dr Somers and he told us I was the poster patient for colonoscopy´s. He continued to monitor my care for the past 8 years. Removing all these polyps from me to save my life. I can´t imagine how his loved ones feel about their loss. Dr Somers was such a calm caring person. His smile, his voice and his caring personality will be missed.

I was saddened to learn of Dr. Somers´ passing. I´ve been a patient of his for years and I felt on more than one occasion that I was his only patient. He was inquisitive enough to spend the extra time to truly figure out what was happening to me and the why and together developed a strategy that I´ll utilize for many years. Such a loss to the community, to his family and I honestly looked forward to seeing him and chatting, he was very personable.

Dr. Somers was my doctor for nearly 2 decades. I didn't know him outside of his work, but I can tell you the reference to him having a heart of "pure joy" is something I know to be true. A few years back, he was informing me just before the anesthesia kicked-in what he´d be doing in the colonoscopy exam, including taking a number of pictures. I joked to him, "Doc, if this was a Disney ride, I´d have a picture at the end to show the adventure to my kids." He laughed as I fell asleep. When I woke in Recovery, there was a large envelope laying on my chest... and in the envelope was a 8.5x11 color picture of the inside of my colon! Dr. Somers was already onto his next patient, so I couldn´t thank him, but the nurses and I had a hearty laugh. Dr. Somers certainly had a wonderful sense of humor as he knew I´d bring that picture home and hang it on the fridge with an "A+" added w/ a Sharpie to show my achievement. The kids were horrified!! Thank you Dr. Somers for being a joy while also bringing health and hope to your community!

I just learned of Dr. Somer's unexpected passing. To say I am heart broken is an understatment. It is rare that you find a Doctor as talented and intelligent as Dr. Somer's, who is also compassionate and set's you totally at ease. He eased my anxiety and even took the time to call me at home to answer a question on some confusing results. Not just a top doctor, but a class A human being. My deepest sympathy and sincere condolences to his family. He was indeed special, and it sounds like he lived life to the fullest during his too short years on this planet. Godspeed Dr. Somers.

God bless Dr. Somers and may peace be with his dear family. I knew of his passing a short time after it happened as I was to have my annual colonoscopy. His office called to reschedule and I asked why. I was told he had died suddenly and the scheduler and I both started to cry. I had been seeing Dr. Somers regularly as he had discovered cancer in my colon. As the others have attested to here, Dr. Somers was the kindest most knowledgeable physician I have ever known own. We shared jokes and seeing him for my procedures was something I actually looked forward to because I was going to spend some time with him. Sure going to miss you like all those you touched with your skill, compassion, and ready smile that was infectious.
