Leslie McCool Obituary

Leslie Sue McCool

Evansville, IN

Leslie Sue McCool, 68, of Williston, VT, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 2, 2018. She was the first-born child of Sissie and Ralph McCool's ten children. Leslie grew up in Evansville, IN and was a 1967 graduate of Harrison High School. She attended Ball State and the University of Evansville, and then went on to become an amazing artist and graphic designer. She worked for Hahn Industries, then joined WTVW, and later WFIE as a graphic artist. Leslie refused to let her battle with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) define her. Her spirit and incredible talent as an artist kept her inspired through all of her struggles.

Left to cherish her memories are her son, Augustus James (AJ) Brightman; her daughter, Gracie; stepdaughter, Nicole Brown; grandchildren, William and Charlie White, Lily and Jesse Bowman, and Nora and Nina Brown. Leslie's zest for life and amazing spirit will forever be remembered by her younger siblings, Thomas McCool, of Placitas, NM, Joseph McCool (Suzanne), Martha Thorbeck (Tom), both of Newburgh, Sally Small (Jeff), Ralph Louis McCool (Julie), Frederick McCool (Wendy), Amy Henton (Keith), all of Evansville; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Andrea McCool, and her brother, Samuel McCool.

The family would like to acknowledge Leslie's son, AJ, who epitomized the love between a mother and her son by unselfishly caring for her until her last hour. We love you AJ.

I was fortunate to know Leslie. I was inspired by her strength and positive attitude. Her smile lit up the room. It was a long battle and through it she was loving and concerned for others. We talked about sports and her favorite teams and players. NOT being a a Tom Brady fan we laughed together when I told her the story of how I went to the store and bought her a Tom Brady t shirt ! I would NEVER do that for anyone else ! When I think of Leslie I also think of her paintings. I admired them all. It was remarkable how they changed as her illness progressed, always beautiful in different ways. I am blessed to have one of her painting hanging in my home. May Leslie enjoy peace and being pain free. AJ I have never known a more devoted son . The love you had in being a son and caregiver knew no boundaries. May you and Gracie find peace in knowing how much she loved you.

Heaven needed a new artist - God called Leslie for the job and she accepted....

AJ and Gracie - you were blessed with a wonderful mother and I know she felt the same about you as well.

Janie and I wish you strength and know our prayers and thoughts are with you both going forward - while we had not seen Leslie in quite a while our memories of her positive outlook and sense of humor are very fresh!

I was fortunate enough to be Leslie's caregiver for a short period in her last days. In that period I felt like I knew her all of my life. We had many laughs, had deep conversations about life and she gave me some wonderful advice. Since losing my Mother only three months ago, Leslie gave me comfort in knowing that she was sent to me by my Mother. I will miss her deeply knowing that in her last weeks I was there for her through the thick of it. She loved her fish dinners with LOTS of lemon, brownies and laughing at all of the videos I showed her on Facebook. Knowing Leslie is like knowing and being part of my family. AJ I know it's been along hall but being the young man that you are and taking care of your Mom for all of these years speaks volumes about what kind of man you are. You and I are made of the same mold. As I took care of my Mother for 12 years. I will miss my buddy dearly and I am thinking of her every day. It was my honor in taking care of her with special love and admiration of a wonderful human being that left this Earth too soon. But also knowing that she is not in pain and is at peace. Hope you are enjoying your new life in Heaven Leslie and I hope you get to meet my Mom, Dad and rest of my family. They will greet you with open arms as the angel you are!
