Barry Goldberg Obituary

GOLDBERG Barry Goldberg, M.D. died peacefully on Tuesday, September 25, 2007 at the age of 63 in New Haven. A complex and uniquely spiritual man, he devoted his knowledge, his time, his laughter and his soul. He will be so deeply missed by his wife, Betty, with whom he shared love for 46 years, all his children, in whom he had such pride, Mickey and Sheri Goldberg, Rachel and Jeff Gell, Dr. Daniel Goldberg; mother, Elsie; sister, Barbara; and his adored grandchildren, Jordan, Emily, Scott and Sydney for whom he left infinite memories of fun and love. First and foremost, Barry Goldberg was a man who created a strong, bonded and loving family who will carry on because of him and for him. Dr. Goldberg was the Director of Sports Medicine at Yale University and Clinical Professor of Pediatrics at Yale School of Medicine. He was medical director for the Amity Regional School District and had been honored with the Connecticut Association of Athletic Directors Service Award. Through his work and research, Dr. Goldberg had a profound and lasting influence on the health, safety and well being of young people. To glance at his resume is to understand the extraordinary impact he had on the quality of life for thousands of children. Graduating Magna Cum Laude from Queens College, elected to Phi Beta Kappa and Summa Cum Laude from Downstate Medical Center where he was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha, he completed his pediatric training at Yale-New Haven Medical Center. He practiced pediatrics at the Yale Health Service and then in Milford, before completing a fellowship at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York at the Nicolas Institute of Sports Medicine. He served as Vice Chairman of the Connecticut State Committee on Sports Medicine, Chairman of the Medical and Safety Advisory Committee of the US Baseball Federation, Board of Directors of Little League International, Medical Advisory Board of Major League Baseball and the International Board of Global Wealth Initiative. Dr. Goldberg had served as Consultant in Sports Medicine to the Milford and Stratford Schools, Fairfield University, AMA on Pre-adolescent sports, American Academy of Pediatrics, Natational Association for Sports and Physical Education, American College of Sports Medicine Youth Sports Council, Volvo Grassroots Tennis Program and the American Equestrian Association. He had worked with the New York Knickerbockers, Jets and Rangers and team physician for the New Haven Ravens Baseball Team. Dr. Goldberg actively participated in the Connecticut State Medical Society which implemented youth preseason conditioning and safety standards for equipment. He was the editor of the National Football League's health and safety youth football series "Play Safe" and editor of the text "Sports and Exercise for Children with Chronic Health Problems." He published numerous articles on medical evaluation and screening, prevention of injuries, exercise testing, follow up care, preparticipation exams, and presented scores of presentations nationally dealing with sports, health and safety. Far beyond his extraordinary knowledge and experience, it was Dr. Goldberg's remarkable and unstoppable dedication, genuine concern, persona and wit, so loved and admired by his family and friends, which endeared him to the children, patients and athletes for whom he cared. Good Night Moon. Funeral services and celebration of his life will be held in Temple Emanuel, 150 Derby Avenue, Orange at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, September 30. His family will observe a period of mourning in their home at 958 Rainbow Trail, Orange from Sunday through Wednesday evening 7 to 9 p.m. Contributions in his memory may be made to the Barry Goldberg Children's Center Fund at www.globalwealthinitiative.org or Global Wealth Initiative Inc. 4359 Cordero Dr., El Dorado Hill, CA. 95762, (916-941-8459) a 501(e)(3)corporation. There is not a day that I don't think about Barry. We shared years of friendship at SUNY Downstate medical school and later on pediatric residency training at ale. Since we are both "Goldbergs", Barry was Goldberg. #1. We worked closely together in the laboratory classes, on rounds during clinical rotation, at during internship and residency at Yale.

Barry and I were very meticulous. We always completed our work carefully and meticulously. We were the last to finish our laboratory work since he was very meticulous and truthfully I was a bit slower. He was always patient we me. (pokey)

I still remember well our freshman labs. Everyone finished before us. We just 10 minutes to gobble down our lunch bags from home before the next lecture class where we had to be promptly on time as that started on the dot of the. hour. I always remember him saying to me, "Someday, some one will pay for this."Years later, while in pediatric training, I remember him saying, "Thet never paid for this!"

Barry, you were one of the finest persons I have known and always one of the best friends in my life. I miss you and Betty and your family.
With Love, Allen (The Other) Goldberg

Barry and I were classmate brothers at Downstate and soul-mates in training at Yale Pediatrics. As "A Goldberg", he always kidded I was "Goldberg 2". He was right! I love you and always will.

PS: You always told me when we ate a 5 PB&J minute sandwich outside the men's room at Downstate before the 2PM class (we were the only ones remaining in the laboratory from AM class): "They will pay for this!" They never did! But were were paid in spades from loving our patients and having the love return. With LOVE to you and Betty, AIG

Dr. Goldberg was a wonderful person and doctor during my years at Yale. He helped countless athletes to recover from injuries, including myself. May God bless your family the way Dr. Goldberg blessed so many of us.

Betty,
I can hardly look at a can of fruit cocktail without thinking about Barry. My son Alan was a patient of his and was to participate in a swim meet, but had a temperature of 103. We called "Dr. Goldberg" to see what to do. His advice was to buy fruit cocktail with heavy syrup, and have Alan drink only the syrup. After 2 days and consuming about 20 cans of the just the syrup his fever was down to where is was safe to swim. He missed coming in first by a hair! Hopefully the memories of the past will be of comfort to you and your family in the days and months ahead.

Dr. Goldberg was a wonderful doctor to my 2 children. I remember being a new parent and how he would be so helpful and encouraging to me in that new role. He was always so considerate of my children's fears and he would always amaze me how he understood the quirks in their personalities. Even years later after he had left Milford Pediatrics he remembered my children at Amity High School. He was a beautiful person and a gift to the medical profession.

I am so very sad to learn of Dr. Goldberg's death and I'm glad to learn it was peaceful. WHAT a wonderful doctor he was to my two girls up until the early 80's when he took the sports medicine position and left the pediatrics practice. He was also wonderful to me, a mother who needed encouragement sometimes. He listened and taught and threw in his humor to lighten my load many times. Around his 40th birthday, I had an appointment at the Milford office and it had snowed and iced a day or so before. The last parking space available was by the back entrance and the spot was covered with a large patch of solid, thick black ice. I eased into the space and hoped the car wouldn't slide away, hitting the nice car next to me. I mentioned to Dr. "Oldbird," as my daughter called him, that it had been interesting to park and I was glad I didn't slide into someone's Jaguar. He made a momentary face of concern and relief -- you've probably seen it -- as he quickly weighed his comment's impact and said, "If you hit it, I'd have to kill you" (he didn't really mean it!)-- it was his car. His favorite toy and I think had been a present to himself for the birthday. We had a good laugh over his reaction to the "almost" crash. I think he may have peaked out the door as I left just to make sure I didn't skid into it. :) I'm sure the people who had the advantage of his ministrations for their injuries were very blessed. I just referred to "Dr. Oldbird" a couple of weeks ago when talking with my daughters and they remember him fondly as well, though they were quite young when he left the peds.
Please accept my heartfelt condolences for your sorrow and God bless you all as you say goodbye.

I will always remember Dr. Goldberg for his gentle manner. He was my first daughters pediatrician and one I will always remember for calming the fears of a new mother. He gave my daughter her nickname, Kath, and whispered to her that "dad has to get you a credit card to Bloomingdale's". We will miss you.
