Thomas Stone Obituary

Dr. Thomas L. Stone Dr. Thomas L. Stone, a pioneer in alternative medical diagnostic and treatment strategies, died July 14, in Kankakee, Ill. Born in Chicago on Oct. 27, 1934, to Charles Stone, a composer, and Bernadine De Grave, a Zeigfeld Follies ballerina, he graduated from Barrington High School in 1952 and attended Northwestern University as a Chick Evans Scholar. Dr. Stone earned his medical degree from Loyola University's Stritch School of Medicine in 1960. After completing his residency and internship and serving as an Army captain in Texas, Dr. Stone established his first medical practice at Forest Hospital in Des Plaines, Ill., in 1966. In 1980, Dr. Stone unveiled the Center for Bio -Ecological Medicine in Rolling Meadows, Ill. In 2000, Dr. Stone's Center for Bio-Ecological Medicine expanded into the Center for Bio Energetic Medicine in Kempton, Ill. He never retired and continued to treat patients last week. Throughout his career, Dr. Stone advanced alternative medicine in many substantive capacities: He served as a Professional Advisory Board Member for Nutrition for Optimal Health Association (NOHA), a Diplomat of the American Board of Environmental Medicine, a Diplomat of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, Fellow of the American Academy of Environmental Medicine, and earned board certification in both psychiatry and environmental medicine. He was highly regarded by his patients and enlightened colleagues who were very grateful for his treatment of challenging medical conditions. As a physician, father and friend, Dr. Stone was captivating, brilliant, dedicated, enthusiastic, courageous, authentic, considerate and very generous. In addition to advancing cutting edge medicine, Dr. Stone enjoyed humor, reading, gadgets, VW buses, photography, gun clubs, computers and his three children, three grandchildren and two dogs. Dr. Stone was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Stone and Bernadine DeGrave; his brother, Robert Stone; his sister, Leona Stone; and his ex-wife, Carolyn Snorek (formerly Capouch). I had the pleasure of working with Dr.Stone at Forest Hospital.Although today it's common knowledge that psychosis has a genetic componet, back then this was a novel concept and he truly was a pioneer in the treatment of biochemical abnormalities in mental illness.
I remember him as a passionate,open-minded,caring individual whose presence will undoubtedly be missed. My sympathies to all his family and friends. He and all of you will remain in my thoughts and prayers.A contribution shall be made in his name in the hope that in some small way it will help someone. He would have appreciated this.

Dr. Stone was my friend and physician. Through the years, I witnessed his healing hands restore health and hope to many people who had almost lost both. Dr. Stone's legacy to family, friends and patients is his understanding, capacity for humor and generosity and willingness to see the whole patient rather than symptoms. My condolence to son David, daughters Laura and Alisa, their families and his brother David Stone. We all celebrate his life and mourn his death.
