John Watterson Obituary

John Sayle Watterson, III died on Thursday, March 16, 2023, in Charlottesville, Virginia.

Born in Cleveland, Ohio, on November 5, 1939, (Guy Fawkes Day in the UK), he was the son of John S. Watterson Jr., and Emily Timberlake Watterson.

He is survived by his wife, Yvonne Guy Watterson of Charlottesville; twin daughters, Martha and Emily Watterson; brother, Stuart of Charlottesville; and granddaughters, Jane, Charlotte and Sydney. A brother, Wayt Timberlake "Tim" Watterson, died in 2018.

After graduating from University School in Shaker Heights, Ohio, he received his BA from the University of Virginia in 1962, an MA from Western Reserve University in 1967 and a Ph.D. from Northwestern University in 1970, all in history. He was a member of the faculty of the University of South Dakota from 1970 to 1983. After working in Chicago, he taught history and government for University College, University of Maryland, from 1987 to 1991 on military bases in Korea, Germany, and Spain. Returning to Charlottesville in 1991, he taught courses, primarily in the History of Sport at Virginia Commonwealth University and James Madison University. Although trained in Early American History, he developed a second specialty in sports history, notably the history of college football. He was the author of Thomas Burke, Restless Revolutionary, College Football, History, Spectacle, Controversy, and The Games Presidents Play as well as numerous articles.

In the 1990s, he also worked in real estate for Kirtley Watterson Realtors and St. John Properties. He also was executive director of The Watterson Foundation and began a support group in Charlottesville for those afflicted with Essential Tremor, a neurological disorder from which he suffered much of his life. He was a member of The Beacon Club, North American Society of Sport History, Farmington Country Club, the Guild of Episcopal Scholars, and Christ Episcopal Church, Charlottesville, and what the members simply call "The Book Club."

John liked to play tennis, pickleball, and, as he put it, "at golf." On Mondays, he enjoyed playing with the Seniors at Meadow Creek Golf Course and for many years at Farmington Country Club. Though he had many criticisms of college football, he attended UVa games regularly, both as a student and later in the 1990s and 2000s. To those who complained about Virginia football, he liked to recall that he was a student at UVa when the teams lost twenty-eight straight and lived in Evanston, IL, when Northwestern set a national record with thirty-four consecutive losses.

The funeral services will be held on Wednesday, March 29, 2023, 3 p.m. at Christ Episcopal Church. Those who wish are encouraged to contribute to the International Essential Tremor Foundation (IETF) in Lenaxa, Kan., or to Christ Episcopal Church.

I met John in Tokyo, Japan, and flew with him to our first teaching assignments at Daegu South Korea. We had a nice little place to stay at the lodge on base: two bedrooms with bath and kitchen separating. That's where I got to know John, over glasses of beer most of the time. He was a brilliant man, with a unique way of looking at the world. I learned from him and remain grateful. I miss you, John.

I only learned of John's passing today. I taught alongside him in Korea way back in 1987. He was a fine man, a good man, and adventurous and kind man. I miss him.

Yvonne, Betsy and I have been in Asheville, NC helping with the grandkids over Easter. Upon our return, we were sad to learn of John's death. John was a great guy with so many interests and great generosity of both spirit and substance. We are all blessed by John's good life. Take best care, David and Betsy Poist

I came to know John through his and Yvonne's generosity. He was always curious about the most recent innovations in the nonprofit sector, meeting our community's greatest and most forgotten needs. It was a privilege to speak with him on any subject, with such a bright mind and accomplished life. I will greatly miss our phone chats. Yvonne, our hearts are with you.

My condolences to John's immediate family and to Stuart and Kay. I always enjoyed John's easy conversation and company, whether golfing with John and Stuart or talking about any of John's myriad interests, including American history, sports, and his life in Evanston and his years at Northwestern. John's gentle and wry sense of humor always had his friends laughing. May his memory be a blessing.

John and I both grew up on Chadboune Rd. in Shaker Heights, OH, and were one year apart at The University School. After many decades, we had the pleasure of encountering one another once again in 2022 at a school reunion. John was most friendly and will be much missed.

When I was admitted by the Darden School in 1995, I was lucky to be assigned to John and Yvonne as my host family in the University of Virginia. During my two years in Charlottesville, I spent almost all the US holidays at John´s house, from the New Year to Thanksgiving, from the Easters to Christmas. These were the best memories as I settled and adjusted to a new life in the US. John was my American father. He taught me how to drive in a parking lot behind the university stadium and helped me shop for my first car. As I left Charlottesville, John and I kept in touch and grew our friendship over the years. He attended my wedding and gave a speech. We saw each other almost every year in the last 20+ years. I remember walking Barkley and Annie with John, playing poker at John´s house, celebrating John´s 60th birthday party, and having meals at Farmington Club. I have learned a great deal from John over the years and shall always love and miss John. Thank you John and may you rest in peace!

To John's family and friends, My condolences over your loss. John was one of the very first friends I made at The Center when I started in 1999 and we got closer every year through our shared dedication to healthy aging, history, sports, and lifelong learning. He was one of the sweetest persons I've ever had the pleasure of befriending and he will be missed.
