Allen Forman Obituary

Allen Sanford Forman

AGE: 85 • Point Harbor, NC

Mr. Allen Sanford "Al" Forman, age 85, of Point Harbor, NC, died Saturday, Nov. 23, 2013 at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital in Norfolk, VA, following a brief illness. Born in Morristown, NJ, on July 7, 1928, he was a son of the late Seymour and Mollie R. Forman. Al attended elementary schools in Morristown, and he graduated from Morristown High School in 1945. He was employed by Fawcett Publications, Inc. of New York City and later M. Epstein, Inc. of Morristown, NJ until his enlistment in the United States Navy in October of 1950, in which he served on active duty until his honorable discharge on August 4, 1954. His service included time on the USS Oriskany, CVA-34, with completion of his enlistment at the Oceana Naval Air Station in Virginia Beach, VA. After attending Fairleigh Dickinson University in Rutherford, NJ for two years, Al commenced a professional umpiring career in January of 1956 by attending the Al Somers Umpire Training School in Daytona Beach, FL. He worked in three minor leagues, two Caribbean winter leagues in Nicaragua and Puerto Rico, and was then awarded a contract to become a National League Baseball Umpire in 1961. Upon the completion of his service with the National League, Al became a Special Sales Representative for the Seagram Distiller's Company in New York City, and at the same time umpired NCAA College Baseball games, during which he umpired 9 times at the College Baseball World Series in Omaha, NE. In January of 1983, Al and his wife Eleanore moved to Kitty Hawk, NC, where for 15 years he owned and operated the Outer Banks Limousine Service, retiring in 1997. Following retirement, he officiated at local high school varsity volleyball matches, in Babe Ruth minor baseball leagues, and often shared his sports knowledge and umpiring experiences with various clubs and organizations as a guest speaker. An active member of the Rotary Club, Al was a recipient of the Paul Harris Fellow Award, which is bestowed to members who have given outstanding service to the organization and to their community. He also served on the Board of Directors of the Outer Banks YMCA, in which he had been an active advocate for its establishment in Nags Head many years ago. Local school children remember Al as their greatest fan, cheering from the sidelines at many sporting events. First Flight High School honored him by placing a plaque reading "FAN OF THE YEAR" reserving him a permanent seat on the bench.

He is survived by his brother, Eugene L. Forman of Kill Devil Hills, NC; his sister, Suzan Gaynes of Weston, CT; his step-daughter, Nancy Linsley of The Villages, FL; four nephews; and one niece. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Eleanore C. Forman, who died December 2, 2005.

A celebration of Al's life will be held at a later date in Kitty Hawk, NC. You may share your memories and condolences with the Forman family by visiting www.themulkeyfuneralhome.com. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to the General Fund of the Outer Banks YMCA, 3000 South Croatan Highway, Nags Head, NC 27959. The Mulkey Funeral Home, 516 Virginia Road, Edenton, NC 27932, is in charge of the arrangements.

Sorry for the loss. I was one of his limousine business customers very early on. I also did printing for his business. He was always a gentleman! Very enjoyable to have known him.

Al worked as a Chairman of the Morris County March of Dimes in the early 60´s. I remember Al coming to our home for March of Dimes meetings. He left tickets for us at The Polo Grounds in New York for a game. He was umpiring third base and in between innings he said hello to us. As a child I remember Al as a "nice man,"
Who always had a great smile to share. My privilege to have met him when I was young. Greg Petro

My name is Art and I was saddened to hear of Al's passing recently. In my early 20's I worked with Al for Seagrams Distillers in NJ. We worked as a team calling on customers across NJ. Being young and impressionable, Al always bestowed his wisdom and humor on me. We both left the Distillery (40 yrs ago) about the same time and lost touch . But every now and then I would think of Al and some of the great stories he would tell me about being a MLB umpire. Rest in Peace my old friend.....

We will miss Uncle Al as he really was as close to me and Teresa as my Dad, Norm Boudreau. Uncle Al was my second Dad, attended many of my football games in college and was behind the plate in several college games! Always positive and fun loving. I will remember great times at Lake Hopatcong, Kitty Hawk and here in Atlanta with Al and Eleanore!
