Joseph Burkhardt Obituary

Joseph P. Burkhardt

Ocean Pines-Lt. Joseph Paul Burkhardt (MSP Ret) passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 21, 2016 at Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury. Born in Baltimore, he was the son of the late Edna Parrish Burkhardt. He is survived by his beloved wife of 50 years, Irene Burkhardt, and children, Scott Burkhardt of Ocean Pines and Chris Burkhardt and his wife Dena of Salisbury. He was the devoted grandfather of Brandon, Rachel and Aubrey. He was preceded in death by son Eric Burkhardt in 1994, brother Charles Burkhardt, sister Ann Pelle, and special cousin-in-law Paul Mooney. Also surviving is his sister Martha Lee Holden of Towson, MD.

Lt. Burkhardt has been a 25 year member of the Maryland State Police, retiring in 1985. Joe was an easy going person who made all around him feel comfortable. He had many great stories and silly jokes he loved to tell again and again (…and again). He loved meeting new people, and was always willing to lend a helping hand. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him

A memorial service will be held on Monday July 25, 2016 at 1:00 PM at the Burbage Funeral Home in Berlin. Friends may call one hour prior to the service. Deacon Charles Weschler will officiate. A donation in his memory may be made to: Camp Puh'tok. 17433 Big Falls Rd. Monkton, MD 21111, or on line at camppuh tok.com. Letters of condolence may be sent via: www.burbagefuneralhome.com

Irene and family,
I was saddened to hear the news of Joe's passing. He was a wonderful husband, father, friend and all round great guy.As a police officer he was a soft spoken role model who gave the best of himself for others. I send you my heartfelt sympathy in hope that you find comfort in knowing so many others join you in your sorrow.

Joe was one of the best at Benson Barrack D when I worked for the newspaper...a great friend...one of the standouts.

To Irene & all of Joe's family, words are inadequate to express the sadness of his loss. I am sorry. Joe and I met during his retirement years. I started with the MSP the year after he retired. We enjoyed talking about how things were and how they are today. He was a good man who did his part to make the world a better place. God Bless him, he will be missed.
