James Macfarlane Obituary

James Langton Macfarlane

1931 ~ 2022

James Langton Macfarlane, passed away peacefully at home on November 28, 2022. Jim was born on May 22, 1931, to Grant Macfarlane and Lucie Gayle Langton Macfarlane. Even as a young child, Jim had a positive, friendly personality which included a fierce love of competition. He and the "Macfarlane boys", which included Grant, Jim, Richard, and John joined an elite group of "Avenue Boys". This led to endless games of football, basketball, and baseball on Wolcott Street in front of the Macfarlane home.

Jim made many friends at Longfellow, Bryant Junior High, and East High School. One of Jim's proudest moments was winning the 1944 Salt Lake Marble Championship and this event was the catalyst to his lifelong motto to "Never Give Up." Jim played basketball, football, and ran track at East High. However, the best part of those years was meeting and falling in love with Carol Corbett, or CC, as he often called her.

Jim graduated from the University of Utah in 1953. While there, he played on the University basketball team and was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity, where he met many of his closest friends.

Jim and Carol were married on June 25, 1953, and this was the beginning of a lifetime love story. Their marriage was solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple on March 16, 1966. Carol and Jim had four children, Steven, Ann, David, and Jane. Jim was a hands-on Dad who taught his children to ride bikes and horses, ski, play sports and laugh. With a strong love for youth, Jim spent hours coaching little league baseball teams and church basketball teams.

Jim went on to work in the printing industry first at Rocky Mountain Bank Note and then starting his own company IC Group in 1982. He served as President of the Bank Stationers of America and made lifelong friends from around the country. He loved the work and the wonderful people he worked with.

Jim volunteered much of his time to his beloved University of Utah serving as the Chair of the Board of Trustees, the Board of ARUP, Red Butte Garden and Pioneer Memorial Theatre to name a few.

He served faithfully in many positions in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. One of his favorite callings was as a Mission President in the Seattle, Washington mission from 1990 -1993.

He was a magnificent father to four children, grandpa to thirteen grandchildren aka "willers" and a great grandpa to twenty great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Carol, his brother John and sister Marilyn.

He is survived by his children Steve (Amy) Macfarlane, Ann (Scott) Jensen, Dave (Tami) Macfarlane, Jane (Des) Barker. We are forever indebted to Misinale Mahe, Bou Havea, Mila Aluesi, Olive Moimoi, Elizabeth Ramsay and Elevation Hospice for taking loving care of our father.

For David, I never met your Father, but I remember how kind and gentle you were towards me ,when my Father passed, It was over thirty years ago, it feels like yesterday, I just wanted your family to know what a kind and caring man you are, and I am sure your Father must have played a great part in your empathy, kindness, and how to be a good man. I am very sorry for your loss-Lisa Moore

Lots of great memories on Emerson Avenue, at Curtis Elementary, Clayton Jr. High, and Highland HS with the Macfarlane family and many other friends and families that were in the area.
Mr. Macfarlane was one of my little league baseball coaches. He also took Ann and I to perform poems on the Admiral Birney show when I think we were in 3rd grade. I don't recall what poem Ann did. I did "I Have a Little Shawdow" He had us practicing on the way, I know that help a great deal.
I was looking trough some old pictures not to long ago and he was in one with our baseball team, another I saw was some of us kids playing on Emerson Avenue. Mr. Macfarland was a good man, friend and neighbor.
My thoughts and prayers go out to the family . Paul Trigg

An absolute gem of a man has left us, but he will never be forgotten because each one of us will carry a memory of just that time when the advice or wisdom he shared with us carried us forward to accomplish that difficult task that we needed to finish. I was a mother of three very small children and I had broken/mangled my leg in a spectacular ski accident. Jim and Carol came to visit and I could see from the looks on their faces that they knew I was in a really desperate situation--and I was not dealing with it very well. As they got up to leave, Jim touched me on the shoulder and with the most tender and sincere sound in his voice he said, "Karen? Just take one day at a time."
It worked, it got me through that horrible time, and it has worked over and over again when I have been dealing with something that was too heavy for me. Did Jim come up with just those words? No, but he knew just when to use them. That was 54 years ago, and I've always remembered where I was and what he said. And I have given and used that same advice many times. Thank you, Jim---and Carol---two beautiful, wonderful friends that enriched my life. RIP Jim. Say "Hi" to Carol and Gary for me.

I was reflective seeing Jim´s passing tonight. He was a wonderful guy, and always was so courteous and warm toward me. I first met Jim, as his son Dave´s early morning seminary teacher at Clayton Jr High. From there our paths crossed often in business , sporting events, and following his business success over the years. He and my other dear friend from that Seminary sons era, Dick Wood Wood, will be laid to rest a couple days before Jim. Two of my young adult hero´s, having lived full, and exemplary lives. RIP Jim, till we meet again.
