RICHARD HORTON
West Jordan/Beaver
W. Richard Horton passed away on July 30th, 2024 in South Jordan, Utah.
He was born March 9, 1930 in Milford, Utah to George Alfred and Macel Rogers Horton. He graduated from Beaver High School where he was very active in basketball, music, and art. As a young man he served a mission to the Southwest Indian Mission. After his mission, he served in the Army for two years and then attended BYU. On December 29, 1953 he married Delores Merkley in the St. George Temple. Professionally, he was involved in sales in Utah, Oregon, and California.
Always active in the Church, he served as Bishop, on three high councils, and as a counselor in the Bonneville Stake Presidency. He also served as a mission president in Michigan (1976-1979) and as a counselor in the St. George Temple Presidency (1995-1998). He and his wife were called to help open the Nauvoo Temple in 2002. He served as a Patriarch in the Beaver Stake.
He was preceded in death by a son, Steven Richard, his parents, and his brothers, Marvin, George, and Earl.
He is survived by his wife, Delores, and his children: Linda Christensen (Kim), West Jordan, UT; Barbara Garrick (Craig), Victorville, CA; Beverly Evans (Doug), Tetonia, ID; Carolyn Thorup (John), Fairfield, CA; David Horton (Tina), Lathrop, CA. He has 20 grandchildren and 46 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held in the Prairie 8th Ward on August 9th at 11:00 am at 7337 South Grizzly Way. The viewing will begin at 9:30 am.
A visitation will be held in Beaver, UT, on August 10th at 12:00 pm at the chapel on Main Street. Following the visitation, the interment will be held at Mountain View Cemetery in Beaver, UT.

The best part about President Hortons funeral was greeting all the missionaries that came out. Elder Frost, Wade, Baird, Sweet, etc. 18 Elders from the mission showed up there in the choir seats. We all hugged and talked of memories being missionaries out in Michigan.

Richard Horton was my fist home teaching companion when we lived in the yalecrest second ward. He was my role model as a priesthood bearer. When he found out i played the piano, he arranged an evening when i could play for our families. After about a year he was called into the Stake Presidency, and every time he visited our ward he would look for me among the aaronic priesthood, and give me a wink or a wave that made me feel like a million bucks. He was both a great man and a great molder of men. i honor his memory. Jim Lee

President Horton was a spiritual lifesaver who helped mold a future that has blessed my life. I'll cherish the time I was fortunate enough to associate with the Horton family while serving in the mission office, a greater family there never was!
