Roger Sutherland Obituary

Roger Allen Sutherland 1948 ~ 2009 Roger Allen Sutherland passed away on May 2, 2009, surrounded by love, after a valiant fight against Cancer. He was 60 years of age. Roger is survived by his loving wife, Bonnie; his sons, Justin and C.J.; his daughters, Jenifer and Casey. Also survived by his step-sons, Matt and Jerry; his daughters-in-law, Dawn, Andrea and Cindy; sons-in-law, Jake and Corey; and 11 grandchildren. Roger was born on July 5, 1948 in Murray, Utah, to beaming parents Calvin Leo Sutherland and Stella Rowene Harding; both preceding him in death. His life was shared with his older brother Brad, who preceded him in death; older sister, Diane and younger brother, Kelly. Roger, a born entrepreneur, leader and mentor, started several successful businesses throughout his professional career, before launching Sutherland Title Company, one of Salt Lake City's leading Real Estate Title and Escrow firms. His subtle confidence and unwavering humility drew a true honor and a firm respect. Roger had an unmatched enthusiasm for life and he inspired everyone who knew him. All were welcomed with a classic handshake or a big hug, a strong gaze and a genuine greeting, "Hey dude!" He loved nothing more than to entertain his family, his children and his grandchildren at his home on the weekends and holidays. Traveling with his wife Bonnie, they honed their golf game together in Hawaii or they were off to Las Vegas for their next adventure. Roger was the consummate outdoorsman. He was happiest camping and hunting with all of his friends and family in and around "more than beautiful" Hatch, Utah, where he was able to spend his final days. A special thank you to Tad and Melaney Draper of Beaver Valley Hospice and the staff at Intermountain Homecare. We will honor Roger with a visitation on Thursday, May 7th from 6-8 p.m. at Larkin Sunset Gardens Mortuary, 1950 E. 10600 So., Sandy, where a celebration of his life will be held on Friday, May 8th at 11 a.m. with a visitation beginning at 10 a.m. Interment in Mt. Olivet Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Roger's honor to the Melanoma Research Foundation, www.melanoma.org; 170 Township Line Road, Building B, Hillsboro NJ 08844; (800) MRF-1290.

Roger and I became friends when we were in high school. I was very naive as a teenager and showed up at a party he was attending. He immediately hovered over me and protected me from the "not so nice" people at this gathering. I followed his career for many years, and was proud to see him succeed. Truly, he should not have left this life as early as he did.

Our condolences to the Sutherland family. Roger was not only fun, he had a real knack for saying just the right thing in a polite, professional manner. I don't know how he did it. He had such joy that put everyone at ease.
Thank you Roger for all your help and advice through the years.

After reading everything that everyone has written about Roger, there is nothing new to say about him. He is absolutely everything that has been said. I am honored to say that I knew him and proud to say that I had the pleasure of working for him. At one time I was part of the "Sutherland Title" family. I can't even begin to express the amount of respect that I have for him. Justin and Bonnie, I am so sorry for your loss.
Bonnie, I love you very much !!!

Roger was a blessing to our family, he gave my sister the love she deserved and she did the same for him. They were the very definition of a couple in love. What a privilege it was to care for him in his final weeks. He was always amazingly strong and kept his sense of humor in such difficult times. I hope that everyone gets just a tenth of the love that they had for each other, just once in their lives. It was truly an inspiration to witness and a joy to behold. We love you Bonnie, and we will care and help you for the rest of your life, because I promised Roger. Love, Paul and Barb

Bonnie, and Justin
Your husband and father was a wonderful and heartfelt man. He was always excited to have a conversation, and went out of his way to make me feel like a champion. He was an inspiration and always celebrated our success and help us get through the hard times of a small real estate company. Beyond his successes in business he was a genuine salt of the earth, tell it like it is, quick to smile, and optimistic person. He will be missed!

Dearest Bonnie and Justin:

Mere words cannot express our sorrow. Roger was one of the Good Guys in our industry. We can't say that about some of our competitors. He was a fierce but fair competitor and we respected him for that. We had many conversations about our companies and exchanged many ideas and opinions on how we were running them. I will miss that incredibly.

Justin, he told me many times how proud he was of you and your work in the business. Bonnie, he once told me that he had finally found the love of his life in you. It was obvious every time we were with you in Vegas and Wendover. You two always acted like newlyweds!

We stand by ready to help you in any way we can through this difficult time. And would consider it an honor if you would take us up on it.

As we Greeks say: "May his memory be eternal"

Love Always, Angie, Bob, Jon and the staff at Salt Lake Title.

May 5, 2009

Dear Bonnie and Family
We are so thankful for the opportunity to have gotten to know you and Roger for the short time that we did. The last few months of Rogers life he had so many experiences that could have made him bitter and hateful but instead he responded in love and concern for those around him. He was so grateful for anything we could do to help him and always said thank you - always.
The first day we met Bonnie and Roger we asked Bonnie what she needed help with and she said "I just want to make sure that Roger is taken care of and comfortable". When we asked Roger what we could for him he said "I want you to help Bonnie - she's going to need help through this". It was inspiring to see two people who care so much for each other and want to take care of each other- no matter what. Thank you for allowing us to be a part of your life.
You have been in our thoughts and prayers since we met and will continue to be so - Love, Tad and Melaney

Diane and Kelly,
So sorry to hear of your loss! Roger was full of life and way too young to leave this earth. Dusty was just sharing memories of hunting with Cal and Roger when he was younger. And thank you, Diane for your note when Carolyn passed. This stuff is never easy. So sorry.

Justin and Family,
I am so sorry for your loss, my heart goes out to your family. Roger will be missed but never forgotten.

God saw that he was getting tired
And a cure was not to be.
So he put his arms around him
And whispered, “Come with me”.
With tear filled eyes you watched him suffer
And fade away
Although you loved him deeply
You could not, make him stay.
A golden heart stopped beating,
Hard working hands put to rest.
God broke your hearts to prove to you
He only, takes the best.

My thoughts and prayers for the much needed feelings of peace and love are with each and every one of you!!!

The childhood memories I have of the fun we always experienced on Hearts Draw in Monticello with Uncle Roger and the whole family will be treasured for all time!! The crazy stuff that was always happening while we were all spending time together always bring tears of laughter and Roger was always right in the middle of each everyone of those memories. Whether it be two young boys driving big trucks to the end of dirt roads or everyone stopping at cattle guards just to get out and have a laugh!!! Those memories will always be Cherished!!

Uncle Roger was an amazing man and an inspiration in my life. He was always there to put a smile on the face and a chuckle in the belly of all those who surrounded him.

I will miss him dearly and will always celebrate the times I was able to enjoy with him and our family.

I heart goes out to you all!!

Dear Bonnie, Justin and family,
I am brokenhearted today. Roger was one of the greatest individuals I have ever known. Roger and I had many conversations about how we were the oldies in the business and the best. I always loved it when I needed to take over a closing package to Sutherland Title ( I was the manager of Countrywide home loans and Primary Residential Mortgage)because I knew that I would be the recipient of a bear hug and a fun conversation. He was a great friend and he will be sorely missed

One of the great ones got away
I love you Roger
