Kevin Capper Obituary

Kevin Scott Capper, 51, died Tuesday, March 17, 2009.
Memorial service: A celebration of his life will be held at noon Friday at St. Andrews Catholic Church.
Memorials: Kevin may be honored by making donations to Mission Houston, P.O. Box 131074, Houston, Texas 77219; Operation Save America, P.O. Box 740066, Dallas, Texas 75374; or Methodist Neurological Institute, 6560 Fannin, Houston, Texas 77030.
The world lost a great warrior on Tuesday, March 17. Kevin Scott Capper now rests in the presence of his Lord where there is "fullness of joy" and "pleasures forevermore!" Kevin battled the disease of ALS for almost 14 years and was ushered into new life surrounded by family and friends at home.
A man of conviction and courage, Kevin lived a life of passion. His first passion was his love of Jesus. Next was his love for his three children, Elizabeth Paige, 18, Laura Meredith, 16, and William Joseph, 14. Kevin was also passionate about his country and its values, the plight of unborn children, those suffering from injustices, and his fellow victims of ALS. A brilliant man of exceptional thought, Kevin challenged the status quo and longed to see all people live life with purpose.
A great athlete and adventurer, Kevin trekked by bicycle from Palo Alto, Calif., to Las Vegas, Nev., and again from Maine to Florida. He also competed in triathlons, runs and other outdoor adventures. After graduating from Fort Worth Country Day School in 1976 where he received multiple athletic awards, Kevin continued his education as a track athlete at North Texas State University in Denton, qualifying to run in both the Texas Relays and Drake Relays. He subsequently finished his degree at TCU. Kevin later was inducted into the Fort Worth Country Day Hall of Honor. He worked at Lockheed Martin and CSC for 12 years before ALS forced his retirement.
Special thanks to his years-long caregiver, June Bowie and her assistant, Bertha Gonzales. Great appreciation also is extended to the caregivers from Covenant Hospice and Palliative Care.
Survivors: Kevin is survived by his children, Elizabeth, Laura and William; his mother, Barbara Clarkin and husband, Walter Saner; father, Dr. Robert S. Capper and wife, Joyce Pate Capper; brothers, Steve Capper and wife, Karen, David Capper and wife, Dianne; "womb-mate," Kerin Morgan and husband, Bob; sisters, Susan Inman and husband, Barney, Dayna Corley and husband, David, and Alaine Capper Garza. He is also survived by 34 nieces and nephews and five great-nieces and great-nephews who will sorely miss their "Uncle Kevin."

Dear Capper Family,

Our thoughts and prayers are with you all during this special Palm Sunday/Easter period for the loss of Kevin.

We knew Kevin through sports and our association with St. Andrews Catholic Church. We couldn't believe that Kevin had passed away on Saint Patrick's Day.

Kevin cared about other people, was fun to be around, liked to play jokes and his smile would light up a room.
Remember the fond memories of Kevin and may God Bless you.- Mike/Buddy/Susan Hurst

I was sorry to hear about Kevin's passing, since word travels slowly to South Dakota. We were classmates at St. Andrew's, and even though I had not seen him in a couple of decades, I still remember him and Kerin fondly. My prayers are with his family.

Dear Capper family,
As Kevin's neighbors on Wembley Rd., we know firsthand Kevin's love of Jesus, his passion for life, his zeal to undo the injustices in life, and his being the person who would give you the shirt off his back. "Indeed, this is the will of my Father, that everyone who looks upon the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life. Him I will raise up on the last day". John 6, 40. Well done, good and faithful servant (Kevin). Enter the house of my Father. May the Holy Spirit comfort your family in your time of loss.

Kevin’s fun loving spirit I will never forget. What a great cousin. I remember how we would drive to Nana and Papa’s house from my parent’s house, Kevin would opt to run and beat us there – what an athlete. I am sorry we were not there for the funeral to support you as you supported us. I look forward to when we all meet again.

We are a group of nurses that worked at the old Saint Joseph Hospital with you. Please know that our prayers are with you and you family. God will continue to wrap each one of you in his loving arms. I know that all of the nice words I have read about Kevin had to start with home traing and you must be proud of what you seeded into his young adult life. It paid off.

Cappers,
My sister just sent word of this - otherwise I would have been there. I have the best memories of your family - as you took me in as your own years ago when my Mom was hospitalized. I will never forget it. All seven of you kids were exceptional and I know you will miss Kevin but it sounds like his relationship with the Lord was so strong-- that must give you comfort. My love to you all.

In the midst of the sadness of loss, I have to smile when I think of doing the Texas-Two-Step with Kevin at Billy Bobs. I would like to apologize to all the other dancers we may've taken out in the process, but we sure did have fun! And I can still hear Kevin's infectious laugh as we clobbered each others feet.
Wish I was there for today's celebration.
My gratitude to God for giving us Kevin.

Kevin was instrumental in leading me back to the Lord almost 30 years ago, when we worked together at SMM in Arl. I still have the bible he gave me for my 20th b'day. He was an amazing friend and a genuine example of a real Christian. His integrity as a believer was the turning point for change in my life. I have never looked back, but have wholeheartedly run after Jesus ever since his witness to me in 1982. I haven't seen him since, but truly want his loved ones to know how he marked my destiny and those that I've had the opportunity to influence. I'm a life that was changed and I am forever grateful. My heart weeps for his children and family; and for the suffering he endured; but I rejoice that he is now with the One that he truly lived his life for. He did not run his race in vain, but finished well. My prayers are with your family.

Dear Capper Family,

My heart is heavy today as I think of the loss of Kevin, but I am encouraged that he has a faith that sustains him forever. Often, I think of the days spent at the Capper house when Kevin was always playing jokes on Kerin and her friends. Many years have passed since those times, but the memories remain to be revisited often. Please know that I am praying for strength and peace for each of you during this time.

Blessings,

Dear Capper Family,
My heart is full of sadness upon hearing of Kevin's passing! He truly was the "nicest" person I have had the priviledge of knowing since he joined our class at Country Day. He ALWAYS had a smile and made us all smile around him. He truly was an inspiration to everyone he came in contact with. We are all better people for knowing him. I will always cherish the memories of him and you all are in my prayers and thoughts. Please take comfort in knowing that he is no longer suffering and is looking down on all of us and of course, SMILING!
God Bless!

Kevin was an inspiration and help to both Marilyn and I including letting us live with him during the summer of 1984 while I waited to get a job with the FAA. Having Kevin as a roommate in college was truly a blessing. As the apostle Paul said-to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord. Kevin is now home with the Lord and we will one day be together again.
