Robert LeMond Obituary

Robert Hughston LeMond, FAIA, devoted husband, honored father, gifted architect, marvelous human being, artist, raconteur and always concerned with family, friends, integrity, politics, taxes and personal hygiene, passed away Saturday, May 1, 2010.
Service: Service of thanksgiving will be at 5:30 p.m. Friday at St. Stephen Presbyterian Church, 2700 McPherson Ave., Fort Worth. Following the worship service, you are invited to join the LeMond family in the Parish Hall.
Memorials: Should friends desire, memorial contributions may be sent to St. Stephen Presbyterian Church, 2700 McPherson Ave., Fort Worth, Texas 76109; Texas Architectural Foundation, 816 Congress Ave. #970, Austin, Texas 78701; or Texas Tech Foundation, College of Architecture, Re: Memorial for Robert LeMond, Box 42091, Lubbock, Texas 79409.
He was born June 26, 1937, in Amarillo, the only child of the late Mary Alice Hart-Hughston LeMond and Ralph Alexander LeMond. He moved to Fort Worth in January 1950 and graduated from Robert Lee Paschal High School in 1955.
Bob was a 1960 graduate of Texas Tech University with a bachelor's degree in architectural design and a graduate student in urban design at the University of Heidelberg. He was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army after serving with the top secret, worldwide Advanced Weapons Command in Pirmasens, West Germany. According to Bob, he knew "a bunch of secret stuff" but couldn't share it without creating a lot of missing persons.
Returning to Fort Worth, Bob met and married the love of his life, Sharon Diane Hoffa, daughter of Ruth and James Hoffa of New Orleans.
As a professional architect, Bob worked with Fort Worth firms Wyatt C. Hedrick, Hedrick and Stanley, Parker-Croston, Albert S. Komatsu and Associates, and Lawrence D. White Associates before establishing his award-winning firm, LeMond Associates Architects, in 1975. He designed buildings throughout Texas, several other states and Iceland.
Bob was the 1993 recipient of the Llewelyn W. Pitts Medal, the highest honor bestowed by the Texas Society of Architects, for a lifetime of exemplary performance as an architect and for dedicated service to the profession of architecture.
He was named the Texas Society of Architects' most valuable member in 1982 and a Distinguished Alumnus of Texas Tech University, College of Architecture, in 1985. Bob served as the president of the Texas Society of Architects, president of the Fort Worth Chapter of American Institute of Architects and president of the Texas Tech University Architecture Alumni Association.
He was elected to the College of Fellows of the AIA and was a founder of both the American Architectural Foundation and the American Society of Architectural Perspectivists.
A three-term member of the AIA board of directors and the AIA Jury of Fellows, Bob was also a member and chairman of the AIA's Resolutions Committee and the long-time chairman of the TSA's Insurance Trust.
Bob also held membership at the American Institute of Architects, Texas Society of Architects, Urban Land Institute, Texas Tech Architectural Alumni Association, Texas Architectural Foundation, the Rotary Club of Fort Worth and Advanced Weapons Alumni, and was also an elder, deacon and teacher at St. Stephen Presbyterian Church in Fort Worth.
Bob loved to laugh, joke, draw and paint, and his artistic talent was known to everyone who received the family's annual Christmas cards.
To quote a longtime friend, "Some lives, like Skeet's, are like a song. Each note rare and precious. As well put together and beautiful as the rainbow in symphony. Many were lucky to have heard the music."
Survivors: His lifelong love and wife, Sharon; son, Del Elliott of Stowe, Vt.; daughter, Leslie and her husband, David Languell, of Plano (expecting their first daughter, Samantha Ruth); many friends; and colleagues.

Dear LeMond family,
My thoughts are with all of you and your sorrow of losing such a wonderful person. My first time of meeting Bob was at a Ft. Worth AIA chapter meeting, some time ago in the mid 1990's. I will always remember that time and each time there after. Bob was a warm-hearted, kind and a special man. I would not only get his incredible Christmas cards, but other notes on occasion that would address me as the "sheriff"! It was an unexpected title, but one that I treasured, since it came from him.
My thoughts are with all of you. I know that his legacy will never be forgotten.

Dear Sharon, Leslie, and Del,
I have just learned of Skeet's passing, a great loss for all who knew him. Skeet was a terrific human being, who always made everyone around him feel special.....it was never about him, always about the other person. I hope you find comfort in knowing that he was loved and respected by many. I was honored to receive and will cherish all the LeMond Christmas cards showing his sensitive, artistic talent. And I'll miss that laugh and great sense of humor. May he rest in peace knowing his legacy is surely his wonderful son and daughter, whom I have had the pleasure of knowing for so long, and now precious Samantha. Prayers for you all.

Leslie, my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. Though I did not know your father, I certainly know you and all the wonderful attributes you have obviously inherited from him, and will pass on to your own children. From what I have read he was a remarkable man who will be missed by those who had the privilege to know him. My heart goes out to you and your family.

We did not know Bob, but we have known and loved Leslie for many years. He must have been very, very special to have raised such a precious and wonderful daughter. Our hearts go out to Leslie, Del, Sharon and all the other Lemond family and people who love them.

For more years than I can remember Bob and I tried to top the other in finding humorous entries in the news media. I will miss those "anonymous" mailings that contained such pleasure. He leaves a giant hole in my heart.

God will bless his entry into heaven and comfort his family.

Dear LeMond family,

No one was more supportive of me during my 16 year tenure with TSA/AIA than Bob. With Bob, friendship and loyalty were not rare commodities but were an important part of his values. All the accolades and honors this iconic and legendary man received were well deserved. Mary and Cathy join me in expressing our love to you.

Hi Lemonds,

I remember Bob as being so lighthearted and fun, that it has always brightened my day just to think about him. Always a fun joy to be around, and loyal to right causes and his friends - not words that in truth can be spoken of many. And we know that if he could have fun with this situation, he would. Maybe he is.

Please remember that death ends a life, but not a relationship - there is no closure as the person is with us as long as he is in our memories, and perhaps long after that. Personally I take great joy and believing that departed love ones, are even more so, just at my side.

Also, the pain you are feeling is in proportion to the love that was there, and having the choice to give up the pain or the love that we have had, we would take the pain. Grief is simply the price we pay for love, and without love,
there would be no point in being human.

With Much Compassion,

Chuck Patterson
