Edward Lazear Obituary

Lazear Edward J. Lazear, began his last great adventure on June 2, 2016. On June 5, 1922 he was born to the late Edward J. and Esther (Richardson) Lazear. Ed graduated from Louisville High School in 1940 and attended Mount Union College until he entered the U.S. Navy in 1943, eventually reaching the rank of Lt. (jg). During World War II he served in the European theatre, and he was commander of an LCT on D Day in the invasion of Normandy, France. After serving in the Asiatic theatre, he returned to academic pursuits. Having received a BS from Mount Union College, he obtained a MS in 1949 and a PhD in Microbiology, and Environmental Health and Safety in 1952 from The Ohio State University. His career included the Cattle Blood Typing Laboratory at OSU from 1952-1957, Research Development at Fort Dodge Laboratories at Fort Dodge, Iowa from 1957-1962, Biological National Center for Toxicological Research, Pine Bluff, Arkansas, 1962-1980, and Environmental Health and Safety, at The Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio, 1980-1986. He was a member of Covenant Presbyterian Church which he served in many capacities, including Deacon and Elder. Ed was an avid golfer and shared his love of the sport with all who indicated an interest. He was a member of Sigma Nu Fraternity, and Ohio State University Golf Courses. Honors received include Sigma Xi Honors Fraternity. Ed's parents, and his sister Doris J. Heggy, preceded him in death, but he is survived by his wife, Eileen Sterrett Lazear, whom he married in June 1946, and two sons, Edward J. II and wife, Diane, James R. and wife, Beth W. and two daughters, Elizabeth Bingley and husband, Graham, and Catherine A Merrill and husband, John. He is also survived by five grandchildren, Daniel, Bethany, Michael and Kristin Lazear and Christopher Merrill and wife, Suzi. A memorial service will be held at 12 noon on Saturday, June 11, 2016 at Covenant Presbyterian Church, 2070 Ridgecliff Road, Columbus, Ohio 43221. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Covenant Presbyterian Church. To share memories or condolences, please visit www.schoedinger.com.
