Harold Sturm Obituary

Sturm, Harold
1925 - 2019
Rev. Harold R. Sturm, simply closed his eyes only to open them in Heaven on Thursday, November 21, 2019. He was preceded in death by his partner in ministry, Anna B. Sturm, in 2008. He is survived by two extremely grateful children, Danny R. Sturm, Lancaster, and Jill and Mark Landis of Circleville, Ohio; along with two grandsons and wives (the pride of Rev. Sturm's life), Nathan and Sarah Landis, Chicago, Illinois, and Kevin and Tami Landis, Bellingham, Washington. To have known Rev. Sturm even casually was to remember him forever. It would be difficult to measure just how impactful the ministry of this Godly man was. Rev. Sturm was a graduate of Ohio University and United Theological Seminary, Dayton, Ohio. Rev. Sturm and Anna, together, faithfully served churches in New Hope, Ohio, Athens, Ohio, Oak Hill, Ohio, and ministered for 22 years at Mills Memorial United Methodist, Lancaster, Ohio. Following retirement, he enjoyed his work at Halteman-Fett and Dyer Funeral Home for 22 years. Calling hours will be at Mills Memorial United Methodist Church in Lancaster, Ohio from 3-6pm on Saturday, November 23, and from 1-3pm on Sunday, November 24, with funeral service to follow at 3pm. Instrumental hymns will be played in the sanctuary one hour before the service (2-3pm). A time of food, fellowship and reminiscing will follow the service. Burial to take place in Rev. Sturm's hometown of Shinnston, WV later next week. Special thanks to those who touched Rev. Sturm's life by providing care and compassion in his final years including the crew at Wendy's, Memorial Drive, Lancaster, the staff at The Ridge Assisted Living, and Scott's Place Care Home staff. Deep appreciation to his young friend, Dr. Christian Price, for his faithful friendship and visits. On his journey to eternity, Rev. Sturm was blessed to hear his favorite hymn, How Great Thou Art, sung to him by Kim Sparrow. "Then sings my soul, my Savior God, to Thee, How great Thou art, how great Thou art."

Rev Harold Sturm, as far as I am concerned, has always been my family's pastor. We loved him like a father. He officiated the marriage ceremony for Kathy and I 46 years ago. His influence made me want to be a "pillar" of the church. I lived the best years of my life in service to Mills Memorial Church while he was the pastor. I don't know if I ever became a 'pillar' but his example made me strive to attain that goal. But, that was not the true goal. It was to serve God to the best of my ability. Pastor made all of us strive for the prize of the high calling of Christ Jesus. There is not one person I have met in my lifetime with the the sincerity, compassion and love demonstrated by our pastor. He loved being a pastor, loved the church and loved God. He had an aura about him that radiated the love of God. He was everyone's best friend, but most of all, he tended his flock. He fed his sheep. I know God has already told him:

'Well done, good and faithful servant; you have been faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord.' Matthew 25:23

I truly believe anyone who knows me will also say how grateful we are to have crossed paths with Pastor Sturm. He is now resting easy. God is smiling.

I don't know where to even start,,Rev Sturm was a wonderful loving, caring man! We love when he was preaching at Mills Memorial,,also to hear him sing and to lead the songs , especially the song He Lives,Everytime I hear that it always reminds me of him standing there singing! He married George and I and whenever he saw us he always asked George how long we married because he wanted to see if George remembered! He was a part of our daughter Melissa wedding and that made it even more special! He always remember everything with our kids and that was wonderful! We shall miss him so much, but we know he is with Jesus and Anna and other family members!

A fine Christian gentleman who ministered to my mother and father so many years ago. They always looked forward to his visits when they were not able to get out and about. With gratitude for a life so richly lived...

Simply the kindest man I ever met. We lived across the street from Rev Sturm and didn't go to church. Every Sunday from the time I was 5 he and his wife Anna would come across the street to take me to Sunday School. This continued until we moved from there when I was in 2nd grade. I believe in humankind in large part because of my early life with Rev. Sturm.

I am very thankful that I had the privilege of knowing Pastor Sturm for many years. I appreciated his genuine love and compassion for others but most of all his unashamed love and dedication to Christ his Savior.I appreciated his long standing service to Christ and His church. I am thankful that he adorned the gospel of Christ by his life. I was blessed to know him and always enjoyed visiting with him whenever I could. Pastor Kevin Landis

So grateful for Rev. Sturms presence in my life. For my entire childhood he was my pastor. And because I served as a pastor for most of my adult life he's probably the only man who's ever really been my pastor. His benediction at the end of a church service was mine as well... And now may the presence of God the father, the son, and the Holy Spirit be above you to overshadow you, underneath you to hold you, before you to lead you, behind you to encourage you, and within you to live with you, today, tomorrow, and forever more.
