Janet Horning Obituary

HORNING Janet Curtin Horning, July 29, 1924 - November 28, 2009. Janet Curtin Horning, 85, died on November 28 in Lawrenceville, Georgia. Janet was born in Gloversville, New York on July 29, 1924 to George Monroe Curtin, Sr. and Laura Potter Curtin. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband Michael Buano, her second husband and the father of her children Curtis Carl Horning, her brother George Monroe Curtin, Jr., and her daughter Carlyn Horning Frese. She is survived by her son, David Monroe Horning of Columbus; daughter, Amy Horning Marschall and son-in-law, David of Raleigh, NC; daughter, Liz Horning Weiler of Lawrenceville, Georgia; son-in-law, Ray Frese of Dallas; grandchildren, Bradley Monroe Frese of Denver, Laura Nicole Frese of Dallas, Amanda Gail Frese of Augusta, Georgia, Lauren Ashley Horning and Alexander Bleas and their mother, Janet L. Horning of Columbus, Philip Curtis and Owen Edward Marschall of Raleigh, Curtis Martin and Brady Monroe Weiler of Lawrenceville; sister-in-law, Donna Olson Curtin of Gloversville, NY; nieces and nephew, Martha Jane Curtin and James Albert Curtin of Gloversville and Katherine Curtin Cleary of Naples, Florida. Janet graduated from Cornell University in 1946 with a Bachelors' degree in Chemistry. She loved her years at Cornell, particularly the good times with her sorority sisters. She married Michael Buano after his return from the war and was widowed in the same year when he succumbed to Hodgkin's disease. She went to work for Mohawk Carpets in Amsterdam, NY, and then, at her mother's urging, as a Chemist for Solvay in Syracuse, where she met Curt, who courted her with determination and finally convinced her to marry again. In their 35 happy years together, Janet helped Curt with his business, but above all, she was a mother and homemaker. Despite her great loss when Curt died of melanoma, she bounced back and embraced life as, in her words, a "retired homemaker." Janet loved walking, swimming, reading, traveling, and that first cup of coffee in the morning. She taught us to enjoy the simple pleasures and to treasure the moment. Above all, she loved people--her family, her neighbors in Lake-of-the-Woods, and her many, many friends. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Inniswood Garden Society at 940 S. Hempstead Road in Westerville, where Janet loved to go for walks. Janet's life will be celebrated on Sunday, December 13 at 3 p.m. at the Westerville Conference Center, 98 Commerce Park Dr.

Dear Liz and family, I was saddened to read the news of your mom's passing. I have many fond memories of her and your dad at the many WNHS functions we were involved in together. Please know that John and I have you and your family in our prayers in this time of sorrow. Take comfort that she is happily reunited with the family members that preceeded her to the hands of God. Love, Cheryl and John Hill

Dear family, YOu all know how very special your Mom was to me. I have always said she was the smartest and wise-ist woman I know. I loved that we could share the very happiest times and the gut wrenching sadnesses of life. I would like to give each of you a big hug. Dot Erickson

Dear Amy and Family,
We are saddened by the news of your mother. We remember her fondly as a warm, loving, gracious woman yet strong and independent. Always smiling and genuinely interested in knowing what was new in our lives when we'd stop by the house for an impromptu gathering or pool party. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all at this difficult time.
