Soon thereafter he joined the U.S. Army Air Corps as an aviation cadet. In October of 1944, he received his commission as a navigator and subsequently joined the crew of a B-29 Superfortress stationed on Tinian Island. He flew 18 bombing missions over Japan and was awarded a Distinguished Flying Cross as group navigator/radar in the lead plane on a mission that destroyed an important Japanese military factory protected by strong anti-aircraft defenses. In 1949 he was graduated from Williams College after which he joined Copco Papers, Inc. in Cleveland, Ohio. In 1967, he was transferred to Copco's headquarters in Columbus, Ohio where he was made CEO in 1975. He retired in 1990. Jerry also served on the Columbus Airport Commission and the Executive Committee of the Columbus Chamber of Commerce. He was married for 65 years to Constance Roberts from Scarsdale, New York, who preceded him in death in 2014. Jerry and Connie were avid golfers. They spent most winters in Naples, Florida playing golf with friends at the Hole in the Wall Golf Club and the rest of the year playing at The Golf Club in Columbus. They also took great joy in travelling and being in the company of their family and many interesting and exceptional friends. There will be a memorial service at 11 a.m. on Friday, June 23, 2017 at St. Albans Episcopal Church, 333 S. Drexel Avenue, Bexley, Ohio.
