Joan Deaton Obituary

Deaton Joan Ann Mayo Deaton, age 84, of Delaware, formerly of Marysville, died Friday, April 25, 2014 at Willow Brook at Delaware Run surrounded by her children following a short illness. She retired in 1990 after 14 years as middle school librarian for Marysville Exempted Village Schools. She received bachelor's degrees in English and Psychology from Syracuse University and a master's degree in library science from Ohio Dominican University. She was a member of Phi Beta Kappa education honorary. She was a longtime supporter and "Friend of the Library" for the Marysville Public Library and also served on the advisory committee for the "Ohio Reader" program. She was a member of North Unitarian Universalist Congregation in Lewis Center where she served on the board of trustees. She was a member of the P.E.O. Sisterhood Chapter EA, The Woman's Parliament and Mother's Study Service League. She was a past board of trustees member for the Union County Concert Association. She was a longtime volunteer for the mobile meals program at Memorial Hospital of Union County, where she also delivered mail to patients. Above all, she was a deeply devoted wife, mother and grandmother. Her genuine care and concern for family, friends, students, colleagues, acquaintances and community was truly heartfelt. Joan touched the lives of all those she encountered through her kindness. She was born October 12, 1929 in New York City to the late Stephen and Sylvia Singer Mayo. She was also predeceased by her husband of 50 years, Robert Deaton, whom she married September 8, 1957 in New York City. She is survived by her children, Mark (Kaja) Deaton of Oakton, VA, Sara (Tom) Davis of Mason, OH and Jenny (Gwen White) Deaton of Greenwood, IN; and four grandchildren, Lukas, Heili, Eric and Laura. Memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at UNDERWOOD FUNERAL HOME, Marysville, where the family will receive friends beginning at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Marysville Public Library "Friends of the Library." Envelopes will be available at the funeral home. Condolences may be expressed to the family at www.underwoodfuneralhome.com.
