I had the pleasure of working for John Stingley years ago at ACS. John was a very kind, compassionate man. He will be missed and remembered always.

It is with the deepest sadness that we report the passing of "Cinevent" co-chairman John Stingley. Celebrating classic era motion pictures at the annual "Cinevent" in Columbus each Memorial Day weekend these past 39 years was largely due to his guidance, enthusiasm and love for classic motion pictures. John, along with his fellow chairmen Steve Haynes and Arthur Graves, provided a forum for us collectors to gather and trade with each other. A lot of what this web site has to offer is a result of our ability to gather in a friendly atmosphere of these conventions and exchange materials as well as ideas through the friendships we've made.
John was a friend of mine and I shall miss his humorous observations and anecdotes that were a part of our great enjoyment of the "Cinevent". God bless and keep John Stingley.

My first Cinecon was 1976, New York. Unable to afford a plane ticket, I drove to Columbus (I lived in Cincinnati then), and then drove to NY with him and Earl Lisk, where we shared a hotel room. His is a truly irreplaceable loss.

The loss of John is devastating personally. I have known John for more than 30 years. When I lived in Springfield, Ohio, and Columbus, I would attend the Sunday night screenings at his home.
For the past 15 years or so, I have been rooming with him at Cinevent.
I have so many fond memories of John, the late-night talks about
movies, film collecting, movie music as well as other things, that it would take me pages to tell them all. While I will continue to attend and support and help at Cinevent, it will never be the same. John will be missed by countless people both in the film community and out.

I met John in the early 1980's while attending my first Cinevent. I lived near Columbus at the time so later John invited me over to one of his infamous Saturday movie-thons. Film collectors would come from all over and meet at John's house around 1:00 in the afternoon. Everyone would brings prints of films they wanted to run. The names of the films went into a hat and one by one we would get through most everything before leaving at around 1:00-2:00am. John had a huge silent film collection and I loved being able to see many rare titles,
some of which I've never seen elsewhere. Also, I met many other
collectors at his home and they have remained good friends to this day.

As video became more popular and collecting on film started to wane as the 1980's wore on, the Saturday movie-thons came to a gradual close. They are a cherished memory for me though and the man responsible for them is now gone.

It is so hard to find words to express the depth of sadness of the untimely loss of John Stingley. John was my boss, my mentor and my friend. John gave selflessly of his time and talent at ACS. He mentored me with comments and helpful advice throughout my career. Most of all John was a kind, caring, dear friend. He will always be remembered fondly by all those whose lives he touched. I find comfort knowing that he is up in heaven, where there is no pain, rubbing elbows with the late Silent Film Stars giving them much overdue recognition! Our tragic loss here on earth is heavens gain. I will miss him greatly. Thank you John, for all that you have done for me. You will live on in my heart forever!

I still remember coming to work with my mother at ACS when I was just a little girl, and John buying me candy out of the vending machines. I never thought I'd become his assistant one day.

John, you've taught me so much these last 6 years, and I sincerely thank you for that. I only wish I would have known sooner we both shared a love for photography, as well as many other things. We are all like a family around here and it just won't be the same without you. You will be missed more than you know, and I pray that your passing has brought you peace and taken you to a better place.

John~

You will be missed more than you will ever know. I never realized how much of my life you were a part of.

Walking into your office and having daily conversations and constant humor for almost 30 years will always be remembered, forever mourned in my heart and most of all, so very hard to accept.

You were my best friend and like a brother to me, I will always keep you in my heart and thoughts.

Rest in Peace.

John was truly a "one off", absolutely unique man. His infectious, often fearless enthusiasm, left all of us wanting more.

More of him.

Those close to him are truly fortunate to have had such a wonderful person in their lives. John quite powerfully affected my life for the better, and I will always be grateful for having known him.
