Lucille Kirk Obituary
KIRK Lucille Cox Kirk, 89, of Columbus, passed away September 6, 2005 at her home. After growing up in Charleston, West Virginia, and Pittsburgh, Pa, she and her parents and sisters moved to Columbus where she finished her senior year at Upper Arlington High School. She graduated from the Ohio State University in 1937 with a degree in fine arts. On November 12, 1938 she married Gilman D Kirk, and as she wrote in her life story, "lived happily ever after." Following college, she remained a devoted member of Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority. She was a member of the First Congregational Church, TWIG 13 Children's Hospital, the Junior League of Columbus, and the Dixie Club. She was a Charter Member of the Women's Board of the Columbus Museum of Art, where she also worked as a docent. During her long career as a surgeon's wife and mother of four, she also had the opportunity to travel extensively. In addition to annual visits to her cherished homes in Bay View, Maine and Sanibel Island, Florida, she traveled internationally to Africa, Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. After her 80th birthday, she swam and snorkeled in the Red Sea with the resident dolphins. She trekked through the Jordanian desert to visit Wadi Rum and Petra. In the last month of her life she jetskiied with her youngest son to an island off her residence in Maine, and always the avid OSU football fan, she was in Ohio Stadium last Saturday to cheer the Buckeyes on to victory. She was born November 12, 1915 in Chattanooga, Tennessee to the late Roy Lipscomb and May McNeer Spangler Cox. She was predeceased by her husband of 55 years, Gilman, and her sisters, Frances Hoopes and Virginia MacIvor. Survived by her daughter, Lucille L. Kirk of New York; sons, Gilman D.
