Lynne Hurley Obituary

HURLEY Lynne Ann Hurley (Work) was born October 30, 1946 and lived deliberately everyday until June 23, 2012 when she passed away at Kobacker House, while attended to by family, friends and angels. She graduated from Bishop Watterson High School where she was a member of the National Honor Society, earned a Bachelor of Social Work degree at The Ohio State University, and was a member of Alpha Delta Pi sorority. She is preceded in death by her parents Ray and Betty Work. She is survived by her husband, William to whom she was married for 43 years; her sons, Robert Patrick (Linda) of Northborough, Ma., and William Michael (Julie) of Columbus; her sister, Christine Work Fisher (Christopher) of Columbus; and her five grandchildren, Will, Allison, Nicholas, Abbigael, and Dylan, as well as several nieces and nephews. She spent her career serving the least of her fellow brothers and sisters as a social worker in a variety of agencies, including United Cerebal Palsy, Catholic Social Services, Passport, Franklin County Children's Services, Clintonville Resources Center, CallVac, and others. After leaving social work, she assisted her husband in operating their own home-centered business. As a member of Immaculate Conception Parish, she was the co-founder of the Shut-in Visitation Ministry, a group of families who provided visits and Holy Communion to the sick and shut-in members of her parish. Lynne was an avid fan of women's sports and a very serious tennis player. Her favorite pastimes included attending many OSU Women's Basketball games, and enjoyed going to golf and tennis tournaments. She also loved gardening and her clematis and hibiscus literally stopped traffic. She enjoyed traveling to Florida, Michigan, and New England, hated computers, loved to pester Republicans, but most of all, she enjoyed doting over her grandchildren. She was diagnosed in 2004 with advanced stage Ovarian Cancer. She endured multiple surgeries, chemo and radiation, and several recurrences. Yet during her eight year battle, she spent nearly six years symptom and treatment free. She became a role model for fellow patients, health care professionals and her own family and friends. She never complained about her illness and she embodied the idea that our lives are not defined by the challenges we face, but how we face those challenges. Her family would enjoy celebrating her life by receiving visitors at SOUTHWICK-GOOD & FORTKAMP FUNERAL CHAPEL, 3100 North High Street, Columbus, Ohio on Wednesday, June, 27th from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow on Thursday June 28, at 10 a.m., at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 414 E. North Broadway. Msgr. Anthony N. Missimi presiding. Interment in Union Cemetery will conclude the celebration of the life of this marvelous woman. In lieu of flowers, the family is asking that contributions in her name be made to Bishop Watterson High School, Kobacker House, or Immaculate Conception Church. www.southwickfuneral.com

Mrs Hurley and I used to have a great laugh every time she'd come in to get her blood drawn on Kenny Rd. I seemed to be her regular registrar. I enjoyed our conversations. You would have never known she was sick. I will miss her greatly and I will keep the family in my thoughts and prayers.

Lynn,

It's odd that we should celebrate your life and Leroy Neiman's, as well. You both loved the sport of basketball. Boy, weren't those wonderful Katie Smith, Jessica Davenport and Jantel Lavender days at OSU and in the WNBA. We were there!

I am honored to have been asked to sing on Thursday at your celebration. The next time I do When the Saints it will be for you and Leroy.

Bright moments,
