Paul Kates Obituary

Kates Paul Matthew Kates, 66, of Columbus, OH, a true legend of Ohio, passed away Saturday, April 29, 2017. Born January 13, 1951 in Columbus, Ohio, he was the son of the late Oval Boyce Kates and brother of the late Randy Lee Kates. He was a standout football and basketball player from Northridge High School, class of 1969, and recruited by some of Ohio's football programs. In 1971 he followed in his father's footsteps and became an iron worker employed by Scioto Erectors and Kokosing for over 40 years. He was a member of many excellent crews responsible for many of Ohio's structures and landmarks including OSU Stadium improvements and Crew Stadium. He is survived by sons, Brandon and his wife, Sloane of Hilliard, OH and Matt and Tiffany of Powell, OH; his mother, Elizabeth Hess Kates; four granddaughters, Abbey, Hannah, Sydney and newly born Amora. Friends may call from 10 a.m.-12 noon on Saturday, May 6, 2017 followed by a service at 12 noon at CROUSE-KAUBER-FRALEY FUNERAL HOME, 225 N. Main St., Johnstown, OH 43031.
