I sit here re reading the comments about Richard and thinking , again, that the term GENTLE man is the one that fits him best. Apparently, I am not alone. It is only a few days before Christmas, and I can see Richard playing piano for the Heavenly Choir. I know the Lord is smiling, as everyone did when Richard played. GOD BLESS YOU CAROLE AND OD BLESS THE REST OF THE FAMILY.

In 1966 Rick, as we called him, was the Artist-in-Residence at OU newly arrived. He had a room with 13 of us students at Kahler Cottage which sat next to Scott Quad. That's how I met this wonderful man who I came to admire immensely for his supurb piano artisty, graciousness and gentility. It was only today that I found he had died in 2014 and I am greatly distressed and not being able to meet him again in life. I will forever remember this wonderful man who inspired so many, even those like me who are not musicians. RIP Rick.

I just found out about Mr. Syracuse. I was a voice ed major and graduated in 1979, now living in San Antonio, Texas. Thinking back, he scared me to death in my piano juries, but his fingers were magic on the keys. My deepest condolences AND blessings.

Condolences to you at this time. I will never forget his rendition of Rhapsody in Blue at Mem Aud under the direction of Andy Trachsel. The audience all gave him a standing ovation with whistles, hoots and hollers! He was a treasure! He also played s beautiful rendition of Claire de Lune at a memorial service I attended. He gave a lot and he lives on in the hearts and souls of many. An example of life well lived!

Dear Mrs. Syracuse,
We add our voice to the many that are heartbroken and deeply saddened at hearing the news of Mr. Syracuse' passing. Growing up in Athens, I looked up to him so, not just for his remarkable ability, but his extraordinary kindness. As I considered music for a career, I was then blessed to study with him for a brief time in the School of Music. My favorite memories included sitting at twin baby grand pianos in his office listening and learning his nuances of Gershwin or Rachmaninoff (or Billy Joel!). He was comfortable whether in front of an orchestra or at the OU Inn or CJ's during my time in Athens. In the last years, he played at the memorial service for each of my parents. His passion for music was only outweighed by his passion Our Hearts, Thoughts and Prayers go out to you at this difficult time. He will be SO missed.

Oh, Carole! Words cannot express the keen pain of loss we feel for Richard. His teaching and playing left ripples in the musical world that will continue to reach outward for generations. The kindness you showed us is a legacy that is even now being passed on to new students. God bless you and comfort you,

I first met Richard when he came in to get something to eat where I worked. He was one of my favorite customers because he was such a great person. He was always kind, showed respect and always so happy; no matter what kind of day I was having he always brought a smile to me when I saw him. I will miss seeing him, as I am assured everyone who knew him will. Rest in peace Richard, I know you are playing for the lord now.

It's a privilege to have known Richard Syracuse—a wonderful musician and a very kind, gentle man. That he was so helpful and encouraging meant a great deal, given that the time I have to play the piano is quite limited. He will be greatly missed, in part because he used his talent to bring joy to so many. My condolences to the family.

It is so difficult to speak of Richard Syracuse in the past tense. I expect to be able to still hear him practicing in his studio in Glidden Hall. A wonderful colleague and incredibly talented pianist, he was devoted to his students. He loved people and was such a thoughtful individual - a consummate gentleman. Whether someone approached him on the street or while he was playing piano at the OU Inn, he always had a big smile for them and a kind word. Carole, I hope you are comforted by knowing that his legacy continues and that we are all the richer for having this talented and caring individual in our lives. He will be missed.

Its hard to find words to express the sorrow over the death of Mr. Syracuse. I was so proud to have him as my piano professor, always admired his incredible playing, his amazing credentials. I remember mentioning to the late great pianist John Browning the name Richard Syracuse, and he remembered him, asked me to say hello. They were classmates in Rosina Lhevinne's class. His kindness, gentleness, genuine interest, smile will never be forgotten. he always live in my heart and i always will be proud to say that i was Richard Syracuse's piano student at Ohio University.Thank you for everything, Mr. Syracuse, i will forever be grateful to you. RIP. My warmest condolences Mrs. Syracuse, be comforted that your husband was one of the most loved and respected individuals in Athens, Oh and elsewhere.

The musical world has lost a shining star. I was blessed to study two years with Richard Syracuse at Ohio U. in the 70's. After a lifetime of listening and performing music, he remains one of the most musical performers I have been privileged to hear. His death is a blow to all who love music.

I never has Dr. Syracuse as my teacher, but we connected on a different level. Long after graduation, he knew my name and where I was from. The only encounter we would have had, had to be at jury time. I remember watching him play at old Ewing Hall. He was playing a passage that went so fast, I could almost have sworn that I could feel the breeze. My last contact with him was the college of fine arts celebration, when a bunch of folks from the 70's decides to have a farewell brunch at the OU Inn and we were pleasantly surprised to hear the lovely piano music. We peeked around the corner to find Dr. Syracuse on the piano. A bunch of us posed for pictures with him. My thoughts go out to his family.

I was deeply saddened by the news of Richard's death. I well remember the many recitals that Richard gave, especially his playing of a Schubert impromptu that was Hilary's favorite. His contributions to the Hillel Foundation's Evening of Elegance were always one of the high points of the evening. He was a great contributor to the artistic world of Athens, Ohio. He will be missed.

As we Sigma Kappas were all so stunned and saddened by the news, we began to reflect about who Mr. Syracuse was to us. I mentioned to the girls that he unknowingly changed the lives of so many of us by being an example of what a true man was. He taught us, through the unwavering love and support he showed you, Mrs. Syracuse, that we should all know that we deserve to be loved deeply and unconditionally by the men we chose to spend our lives with. He's part of the reason it took me 33 years to find my husband and that when I found him, I knew he was worth the wait. Thank you Richard for the impact you made and continue to make in all our lives. Your spirit and you music will live forever in all of us. Mrs. Syracuse, we love you so very much and we are here for you and want to support you in this difficult time. Thank you for letting us know such a wonderful man.

Carole, our whole family grieves with the news of your horrible loss. Both girls have such fond memories of piano due to both of you, and such fond memories specifically of their "musical grandfather:" they were both so incredibly fortunate to have been able to have him volunteer to accompany them at contests and (for Alane) to play duets with him. Richard was a one of a kind gentleman and we are so so lucky to have been a part of his life. Please know we are thinking of you during this time.

Carole, I remember meeting Richard and you under some rather odd circumstances: your home had been broken into and I was the investigating officer. I was so very impressed by both of you. Every time I went by your home, I would think of you and Richard. He was truly a Gentle man. I saw him now and then and he was always so kind. Although I did not know him well, I will miss him. The world has lost a beautiful light. MAY GOD BLESS AND COMFORT YOU IS MY PRAYER. AMEN.

I still remember the day I met Professor Richard Syracuse. I was at Cutler, staying at the hotel before my audition for the school of music. As I was extremely nervous, I asked him (not knowing who he was) if I could rehearse my pieces for the audition. He said yes, that would be fine. He was so talented and had such a great touch and gift of playing, I was almost intimidated playing after him. I memorized all my pieces, figuring if I made a mistake they would go easier on me. After I was finished, he came up to me and said that if I played like that, I would definitely get into the school of music. He also said unofficially, welcome to the school of music. As confused as I ever have been, I asked him what do you mean. He said I'm one of the professors that is going to judge you tomorrow. I'll most likely be your piano professor as well. I was still very stumped. After a couple months, I received my acceptance letter to not only the university but also the school of music. I was so happy. Professor Richard Syracuse had faith in me that night at Cutler. He has taught me so much in my piano journey. I have never stopped playing. I actually still have every piece I learned in college. One of them, is my mom's favorite piece. I was so lucky to have such a talented man teach me everything he knew with such precision and musicianship. God definitely has a special angel providing him with beautiful music every day. Professor Richard Syracuse you will be missed, but never forgotten. RIP

My husband and I were fortunate enough to meet Mr. Syracuse and hear him play in August of this year at a reception. We shared a table with him and other Athenians, who were all a joy to be around. May his family and friends find comfort in his music and their memories of such a sweet man.

Over 30 years ago, Richard and his lovely wife, Carole, took me under their wings and menotred me while I completed a doctoral degree in what was then OUs Department of Comparative Arts. I have the fondest memories of making fresh pesto sauce in their kitchen and taking in all that I could of Richard's musical genius and Carole's generous hospitality. They were, for a short time in my life, a surrogate family and sources of true grace and gracefulness.
My heart is deeply saddened by the news of Richard's death, and my thoughts/prayers are with Carole. "Death," the playwright, Robert Anderson, correctly observed, "ends a life; but it does not end a relationship."

I feel a great sadness at this loss. His music got me through some very rough times in my life. When the rough times were over, his weekly performances in downtown Athens were the highlight of my life each weekfor many years. He could play anything from classics to country and all the jazz and ragtime in between. College students from the school of music would stand around the upright piano and recreate Broadway hits and all for the cost of a beer. RIP, Rick Syracuse, the world will be a sadder place without you.

I was a music education major at OU from 1972-76. Richard was one of my professors who told me I could achieve anything in music that I set my mind to. I often remembered that when things got tough. He was a world class classical AND jazz pianist that could have had an international reputation if he didn't enjoy teaching in Athens, Ohio. He hired me even as a freshman to play drums in his jazz groups. I can't remember him in the 5 years I knew him well ever say a negative word about anybody or anything. This one hurts. So sorry for his family and whoever was driving the van. Prayers for all of them.

Carole, Peggy and I send our condolences. This was quite a shock to us. I remember when he would come with you to class reunions. I also visited with him when our son, Greg, was looking at OU for a music school.
