Robert Buckholtz Obituary

BUCKHOLTZ Robert C. Buckholtz, Jr., age 93, died August 15, 2007, at Abbewood in Elyria, OH. He was born May 6, 1914, in Columbus, where he lived most of his life. After retiring in 1970, he lived in Port Clinton, OH before moving to Elyria in 2005. He graduated from Columbus North High School in 1931 where he was named to the Columbus Citizens All-High School Football Team. he served with the U.S. Army during World War II in Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Central Europe and Ardennes. Buckholtz received a Bronze Star Medal, Distinguished Unit Badge with one Oak Leaf Cluster and the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal with five Bronze Stars. In 1997 he was awarded by the Republic of France the Liberation of France Medal. He was a mail carrier for the U.S. Postal Service for thirty years and was voted the Columbus Mail Carrier of the Year in 1952. He loved Lake Erie and was a boater and a fisherman and was active for fifty years in the Columbus and Port Clinton Power Squadrons. He also enjoyed playing cards and was an avid Ohio State University fan. Mr. Buckholtz was preceded in death by wives Dorothy Given Buckholtz, Rita Van Holte Buckholtz, and Margaret "Peggy" Kramer Buckholtz, brothers Thurman "Tug" Buckholtz, Lawrence "Dutch" Buckholtz, sisters Mabel Bidwell, and Dorothy Sheffield and his parents Robert C. and Minnie Buckholtz, Sr. Robert is survived by a nephew, Thurman Buckholtz, Jr. of Lady Lake, FL; grand-niece, Leslie Witherall of Toledo, OH; grand-nephew, Larry Buckholtz of Westerville, OH; nephews and nieces by his marriage to Dorothy; and sister-in-law, Betty Snyder of Springfield, OH. A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, September 7, 2007, at 11 a.m. at RUTHERFORD FUNERAL HOME, 2383 North High Street, Columbus. Interment Union Cemetery.
