Roy Bays Obituary

Bays, Roy
1929 - 2017
Roy F. Bays, resident of Whitehall, born Portsmouth, Ohio, April 19, 1929, passed peacefully at age 88, September 18, 2017. He enlisted in the Marines in 1946 at the age of 17. He married the love of his life Georgia Toleman in February of 1951. After receiving an honorable discharge in 1952, he returned to Portsmouth working construction with his father. He, Georgia, and their two sons moved to Whitehall in 1956 where he worked at North American Aviation developing test models for the military. Being very supportive of his family and friends and coaching the Red Sox in the WBBA were great loves for him. His players respectfully knew him as "Coach"; a select group affectionately called him "Roy Baby." From 1968 to 1974 while working for the Fritsche Corporation he achieved the accreditation of a Certified Property Manager and a Vice Presidency. He became a real estate broker managing properties for himself and investors. He was truly a man of "The Greatest Generation." He is preceded in death by his loving wife Georgia, mother and father Ada and Clayton, and sister Betty. Survived by sons, Stephen (Marylee), Terrence (Christina) and grandchildren, Justin, Jamison (Joseph and great grand twins Joen and Harlen), Kelyn, Ashley (Matt), Ryan, Megan (Mickey) and Andy, and many loving and wonderful in-laws, nieces and nephews, their families and a special mention for Drs. Paul Leithart and James Soldano, whom he had the utmost respect and friendship with over the years. A short service will be held beginning at 11:30 am, Saturday, October 7 at the Forest Lawn Cemetery, 5600 E. Broad St. Columbus OH. In lieu of flowers, the family asks any donations made in his honor go to the Alzheimer's Association or support.woundedwarriorproject.org/Donate. Arrangements by EVANS FUNERAL HOME, 4171 E. Livingston Ave. www.evansfuneralhome.net.

I remember Mr. Bays cutting all the limbs off the front tree and sealing it with some type of tar. Mrs. Bays was so mad because she thought he killed it. He told her it would grow back even greener. No one believed him. The next year we all ate crow. The tree grew back and it was beautiful.

Mr Bays was a great coach to me and many other boys in Whitehall. I will always remember walking to your house and riding with you, Steve, and Terry to the park to play baseball. Deepest condolences to the family from the Heinmillers of Whitehall.

Mr. Bays, as I always called him was honest, straight forward and direct, a no pulled punches kind of guy. He was also, kind, cordial and good humored. His son Steve is my best friend, and Mrs. Bays, Georgia always treated me as a third son. Mr. Bays led a good honest life. Laura and I will miss him.

Dear family, from the time I heard about the illness, and now the death of my brother Frank, I have kept him and you in my thoughts and prayers. Please accept my deepest condolence.

I will always remember his kindness, smile, and the sound of his laugh. I remember him taking me to look at my first car. While I thought the car I wanted was a gem, he said to me, "Kid, you don't want this car. Let's find you a better one." I trusted his opinion.

My heart goes out to my Ohio family. I know by God's grace all will pull through this sad demise. I share in your grief and will always keep everyone in my thoughts.

May Frank rest in peace.

Sincere Sympathy, Kendra
