Samuel Mattison Obituary

MATTISON Samuel Lee Mattison, Sr., age 91, passed away peacefully at his residence Sunday, January 9, 2011. He was born on November 25, 1919, in Anniston, AL to the late Louieco Mattison and Nellie Richie, and he lived most of his adult life in the Columbus, OH area. A D-Day combat veteran of World War II, he served in the US Army's segregated, all-black, 320th Anti-Aircraft Balloon Battalion (VLA) on Omaha Beach in Normandy, France. Fewer than 500 of the 1st Army's 29,714 assault troops on Omaha Beach were black. His military decorations and citations included the EAME Theater Ribbon with 2 Bronze Stars; the American Theater Ribbon; the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon, The Good Conduct Ribbon; and the World War II Victory Medal. He ran several businesses, and retired more than once from several positions. He dined with Woody Hayes, Bob Hope, and was friends with former Ohio Governor James Rhodes. He saw everything from horse transportation and picking cotton as a child in Alabama, to the advent of motor vehicles, to the "wonder" of indoor plumbing, to continual racial discrimination, to the horrors of war, to the movement for equal rights, to the landing of men on the moon, to the age of the computer, to the age of the computer in every home, to the age of a computer on every hip, to the first black US President (something that he thought would absolutely never occur in his lifetime). Few present and no future persons on this planet have had or will repeat such experiences. He was a quiet, private man who always downplayed himself, but whose infectious personality always forged immediate friendships with anyone he met. His frank, matter-of-fact style, coupled with his honesty and his constant sense of humor, impacted everyone he met. He was a unique soul and an amazingly positive, strong, intelligent man. He will be deeply, deeply missed by his friends and family. Sam Sr. is survived by his daughter, Judy Page; son, Samuel Lee (Andrea) Mattison, Jr.; daughter, Sheri (Verrondo) Foster; sister, Cecelia Manns; grand-daughters, Larissa, Isabella and Sophia Foster; grandson, Alexander Samuel Mattison; several nieces and nephews; and his lifelong dearest friend and business partner, Sam (Carol) McAdow. True to his sense of selflessness, Sam Sr.'s instructions were that he was to be donated to the Ohio State University for medical research at the time of his passing. The family is honoring his wish that no memorial service be conducted on his behalf. Arrangements entrusted to SCHOEDINGER MIDTOWN CHAPEL, 229 East State Street, Columbus, OH, 43215.

Today is the 75th anniversary of the D-Day invasion and I have found that my thoughts keep wandering to my grandfather and to my friend, Sam.
Sam was a regular at the doctor's office where I worked and he and I became fast friends. He was direct and pretty much unfiltered, as I'm sure most people know that he was, and he was devastatingly funny. He brightened every day I saw him or talked to him. To this day, he remains the only person I met as a patient with whom I spent time outside of that setting.
Among the many ways Sam enriched my life were his stories about serving in WWII. He made not only that history real for me, but he helped me understand it from a perspective I could not have gotten any other way. I learned how it was for African American troops and how, after the war, nothing really changed for these brave men who had volunteered to serve a country that wasn't ready to honor their service in return. There is nothing in my own life experience that could even come close. It made me angry, sad, embarrassed. Yet, I was honored that he shared this with me and I was honored to be a small part of his life.
It's been several years since dear Sam passed, but I still miss him and I will never forget him.

Hi Sam Jr, I'm so sorry to hear of the passing of your dad. My condolences to everyone. I met you once at your dads place in Galloway.I can remember back when I was facing hard times and I needed someone to talk to, Mr Mattison I would call him, he would say"just call me sam" always giving good advice, always willing to lend a helping hand. In 1984 he helped me to get my driver license, road test, menuverbility test, I was scared, he believed in me. A man wth a Big Heart. Surely he will be missed:(

To John Callion: As tomorrow marks two years since we lost dad, I visited this site again to reflect. Thanks for your recent kind words. Dad always had fond memories of you and your father... (and some fantastic stories about he & Raleigh in the early days). Thanks again & we hope you're well.

P.S. I truly regret that I didn't spend more time with Sammy after he had filled the shoes of my beloved father, Raleigh Callion Sr.
When I needed him (Sam Sr.) the most after the loss of my father, he was there for me and I will always love him for that! I only wish I would have told him that & I'm sorry that I didn't. He was an Angle when I needed one the most & I'll always thank the Lord my God, in Jesus' name for Sammy, all the days of my life - Amen.

This was an awesome man with a heart of gold. Sam was a giant among men that broke the mold of an average person. He was a very close friend & beloved brother to my late father, Raleigh Callion Sr.
Sam was dedicated to great achievements that others would only dream about & he will forever be remembered for his heart that was bigger than most individuals. He did much for many & asked for nothing in return. I will forever love him for his unselfish dedication, compassion & love, which he freely gave to others without asking for anything in return to all he touched with his big heart.
To Judy, June, Sam Lee & family: Please excuse this late condolence for the loss of this beloved man that I pray I will see again in the near future.
With All My Love,
John Callion

Hello Judy; I was so sorry to hear of your dad's passing. Gary Page just called to tell us; Don is not home yet. It was so important for my husband, Donald Durr, to meet your father. It was his first connection with this part of his family. As you know, Don's mother and your father were first cousins (Mattison). I will always remember our trip to Pearl Harbor with your dad, and his story of the segregation and mistreatment of the black soldiers during WWII. I am happy that we met. We would be happy to be in touch with the family. [email protected], Lois Durr (wife of Donald Durr, Sr.).
