William Schoedinger Obituary

Schoedinger William "Bill" Oliver Schoedinger, known as Daddy, Dad, and PopPop to his loved ones, passed away peacefully on March 25, 2017 in Scottsdale, Az. He was born in Columbus, Ohio to George Richard Schoedinger and Ruth Sherman Schoedinger on September 12, 1921. He met the love of his life, Mary Harris, at a picnic when he was 13 and told his mother he would marry her. On October 23, 1942, he did just that. Their beautiful love story was full of family, friends, fun, and sweetness. They raised their children, Dan, Nancy, and Peggy in Columbus. Bill graduated from the Columbus Academy and served in the Army during World War II at Eglin Field, Florida. After the war, he graduated from the University of Michigan where he was a member of Phi Gamma Delta fraternity. U of M and OSU football games meant tailgating and watching Mary cheer on the Buckeyes while he rooted for the Maize and Blue. He went to work for his uncle at F.O. Schoedinger, FOSCO, and he and his cousin, Ferd Schoedinger sold the business in 1983. His favorite pastimes were always shared with family and friends whether it was horseback riding at Rocky Fork, weekends at Pike Lake, the fishing club, or wonderful afternoons around his brother-in-law's pool. Bill and Mary loved to travel and were happiest when surrounded by their family. Together they taught us just how important family is. These extraordinary adventures took them all over the world including: rafting down the Colorado River, safaris in Africa, snowmobiling in Yellowstone Park, and hot air ballooning in Switzerland. As the family grew with spouses, grandchildren, and great grandchildren, PopPop always made sure to carve out one-on-one time with everyone to learn more about what was happening in their lives. This is his legacy of love and caring that will live on in his close-knit family. They will also remember him for his love of chocolate, which he willingly passed on to his entire family, and the numerous annual family reunions he hosted in Arizona for Thanksgiving which included a hike up Camelback Mountain by the entire family. How blessed were we! Bill was a man of deep faith serving as an Elder among other positions at Broad Street Presbyterian Church, Columbus, Ohio and later as a member of Pinnacle Peak Presbyterian Church in Arizona. He served on the Bexley, Ohio City Council, Huntington Bank Board, Columbus Children's Hospital Board, and was a 33rd degree Mason. He is preceded in death by his beloved wife Mary, son Dan, and brothers George, Bob, and John. He will be deeply missed by many, especially his daughters, Nancy (Pat) Hurley of Paradise Valley, AZ., Peggy (Simon) Schoedinger of Boulder, CO., Diane Schoedinger (Dan's wife) of Whitefish, MT.; and grandchildren and great grandchildren, Ethan (Amy) Hurley, Finn and Reef of Helena, MT., Justin (Andrea) Hurley, Alana and Eden of Scottsdale, AZ., Katherine Makowski of Houston, TX., Michael (Ali) Makowski of Evergreen, CO., Arrin (Alisa) Schoedinger, Inez, Poppy, and Edie of Portland, OR., Tara Schoedinger of Jamestown, CO., Christy Schoedinger, Grace and Lily of Columbus, OH; and a very special friend, Louise Gersten of Scottsdale, AZ. There will be a graveside service Saturday, September 9, 2017 in Columbus, OH, to celebrate our sweet PopPop's life and 96th birthday. Those wishing to honor Bill's memory may send their donation to Broad Street Presbyterian Church, 760 E. Broad Street, Columbus, Ohio 43205.

My deepest condolences. I told Bill many times, "next to my father U are the man I respect most and had the most influence in my life". Bill taught me how to be the best man I could be and allowed me to prosper in business and life. He was one of the 2 best men I have ever known. I loved him like family. I now live in South Carolina but will be in Columbus on Sept 9th to honor what I consider a "Great Man". Ed Smith (Former FOSCO Sales Rep)
