William Hansen Obituary

William "Bill" R Hansen was born December 3, 1927, to Myron and Gladys Hansen. He grew up in Berkley California where he attended Berkley High. After graduation, Bill volunteered for Military Service. He spent most of his enlistment in Alaska. Following his service, he enrolled at San Francisco Community College where he met his future wife, Helen (Sandy) McKay. Bill transferred to SFSU where he played basketball and was the Activities Director for the college. During this time in SF, he also worked at the Golden Gate Theater. Bill and Sandy were married in 1951 and soon after accepted teaching jobs in Whittier, CA. They returned to the Bay Area in 1955. Bill began his long tenure in the Mount Diablo School District as a History teacher at Pacifica High School, then Clayton Valley High School. He transferred to Ygnaico Valley High School in 1963 to become a vice principal. In 1966 Bill was offered his first principalship at Pleasant Hill High School where he remained until the district opened Northgate High School in 1973. Northgate would prove to be the crowning achievement of Bill's long and storied career as an educator. He loved both the staff and students and attended every event put on by the student body. After retiring in 1988, he took an assignment at Chatman College working with student teachers. He also remained active in the community by volunteering at Shadelands Museum, Walnut Creek Sister Cities, the Retired Teachers Assn. and local SIR group. He peacefully passed away on January 15, 2023.He is survived by his son, Lon Hansen and wife Carla, his daughter, Jill Beechinor and husband Bill, his adopted daughter Christi and her husband Steve, 7 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. A celebration of his life will be held on April 15th at Shadelands Museum in Walnut Creek from 1-3pm. Donations can be made in Bill's name to Shadelands Ranch Museum

Lon & The Hansen Family,
There's not enough space to write down all the ways your Dad helped people. As a teacher & Principal & I'm sure as your father he was a shinning example of what those titles mean...I've never known a better person in my life. He set the standard for all those that came after him. He knew everyone who passed through NGHS for example & he always treated us like family & friends. He was a special person & I thank god that I was able to know him on my own journey through life.
R.I.P. Mr. Hansen & God Bless Lee Orr NGHS 78

Mr. Hansen was a huge influence in the lives of his students. He encouraged you to make a difference in what ever you were doing. His stoic, friendly and enthusiastic presence gave all he touched a sense that they mattered, were respected and that he believed in them. I ran into him 20+ years after I graduated and we talked as if no time had passed. It was as if we picked up where we were the last time we were together. I am grateful to have known him.

My sympathies to Mr. Hansen's family.

I have only one significant memory of Principal Hansen, but it´s a fond one. When some friends and I decided to make a Super8 movie placing Apocalypse Now in Northgate, we needed an authority figure to set the plot in motion. We asked Principal Hansen, and he agreed to take on the role, which he performed enthusiastically. His engagement with student activities was extraordinary and made a lasting impact.

He was the principal when I attended PH High. He was a fun, patient, loving person. He walked the halls and everyone knew him. I am so sorry for your loss.

Mr. Hansen, it was a privilege to not only have you as a kind and very encouraging principal, but as a caring next door neighbor. You made everyone feel valued, always acknowledging everyone you passed by. However, the pipes ha ha... Oh, to have one more day on Manzano Dr, neighbors all gathering. We were blessed.

You were a shining example of the best any school administrator could be. Your enthusiasm, warmth, humor and caring shone through in everything you did. I count myself fortunate to be among the first graduating class of Northgate High, and having you as our fearless and inimitable leader. God bless you.

Dear Hansen Family,

My sympathies to you on the passing of Mr. Hansen, I still can´t call many of the great generation by their first name. What a beautiful, impactful obituary in decades of sports, family, teaching and leadership. I can certainly remember his stature, personal demeanor and caring smile.

Respectfully,

So sorry to hear of the death of your father. He was a very fine teacher. Mr Hansen was my Civics teacher at Pacifica in 1959. He had a sense of humor as well as an ability to make students think. Not always an easy task. I went on to become a Civics teacher myself and I´ve always remembered Bill Hansen fondly. He came to at least one of our class reunions and his presence brought back memories of the days we shared with him at PHS. The world is diminished by his passing.
