Andrea Marek Obituary

Andrea Marek, 67, a long-time Bay Area resident, passed away on April 1, 2023 after a long and courageous battle with cancer. She was born in Giessen, Germany, on February 19, 1956, and came to the United States in 1974 shortly after marrying her husband, James R. Marek, then a soldier in the US Army. After traveling the world at her husband's side during his military career, while raising three daughters, she obtained a teaching credential and a B.A. degree from the University of the Pacific in 1992. She began her career as a teacher at the San Francisco Waldorf School. Known to many in Vallejo as "Frau Marek" (or affectionately as just "Frau"), she taught German and career education at Hogan High School from 1996 through 2009. At Hogan High School, she was department chair of world languages and pioneered use of smartboard technology and experiential learning to enrich language instruction. She broadened the horizons of scores of local high school students by organizing regular student exchange visits with a partner school in Germany under the auspices of the German American Partnership Program. From 2009 through 2017, she taught German at Northgate High School in Walnut Creek and continued organizing student exchanges. She helped train other foreign language teachers as a "Netzwerktrainer" for the Goethe Institute and received several awards for teaching excellence, including the Duden Award (2006). As a teacher of German language, history, and culture, she cared deeply about Holocaust awareness, inviting Holocaust survivors to speak with her students. Andrea was a supporter of the Stolpersteine project (www.stolpersteine.eu), which installs bronze plaques in memory of Holocaust victims. After her retirement from teaching, Andrea obtained certification as a tour director from the International Tour Management Institute and dove into sharing her love for, and knowledge about, San Francisco and our national parks. Between rounds of chemotherapy in recent years, she served as a docent for the Santa Monica Conservancy and participated in the docent training program at Holocaust Museum LA. Always planning her next adventure with boundless energy, Andrea adored skiing black-diamond slopes in Tahoe, France, Austria and Switzerland, hiking through quiet forests, marveling at the steep waterfalls of Yosemite Valley, and peering into tide pools with her children and grandchildren as much as she enjoyed seeing the Mona Lisa at the Louvre. In addition, Andrea was an ardent supporter of public transportation and managed to find her way around major cities all over the world by train, subway, streetcar or bus, including in Berlin, New York, Frankfurt, Paris, Seoul and Munich. When at home, she tended a garden in which many colorful and fragrant flowers as well as several fruit trees flourished. She was a life-long learner, always eager to share if she'd read a good book. She is survived by her husband of 48 years, James Marek; their daughters: Rebecca Hoskins, Jessica Marek, and Veronica Marek; their son-in law Nilay Vora; their grandchildren: Isabella Hoskins, Shanta and Anand Vora, Augustina Apodaca; and her siblings: Dr. Wolfgang Bock, Karoline Martin, Anne-Christine Kaiser and Ingrid Gehre-Bock.Donations in her memory can be made to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation (www.bcrf.org), the Scholarship Fund of the German American Partnership Program (www.PayPal.com/fundraiser/charity/179660) or the Holocaust Museum LA (www.holocaustmuseumla.org/tribute-giving).

Don't know if its too late to leave a message. I came across Andrea's Birthday on Facebook and one of the next messages, a fellow ITMI friend wished Andrea Happy Birthday in Heaven. I am shocked. When I was leaving a message on Andrea's FB page, I was just thinking I hadn't seen her awhile on FB and then saw the message. I was in the same class as Andrea back in 2017, and she was known as Frau. She was so interesting and we would often go get lunch together. From the obituary, you know she touched a lot of people's lives.

Thank you to everyone for all of the kind words you left for my mom. Life is incredibly empty without her. She was not only my mom, but also a loving force for so many other kids. I am so truly blessed to have been your daughter. There is not a day that goes by where I don´t want to pick up the phone and call you. I know that you are watching over us all, and we all have a guardian angel named frau, and for some of us mom. My mom never forgot about all of her students and always held onto the fond memories she had with all of you. She was an amazing mom and was always there for me whenever I needed her. She was the most amazing grandmother to my daughter Augustina, and also so involved with her other grandchildren as well! She was like a second mom to my daughter; and the bond my daughter and mom shared was incredibly special. My mom encouraged me to focus on my educational goals, and overall always told me not to worry. She loved teaching, and always put so much effort into being a good teacher. I am so proud to call you mom and I know one day we will see each other again. I miss you so much mom.
Love your daughter Veronica

Sweet Andrea, my roommate during our training as tour directors in California with ATI. You were such a wonderful, warm, sweet, smart and super funny woman who became my friend during this time and we had our own inside jokes. Makes me very sad to hear of your passing. Your memory will be a blessing always. May you fly free , Andrea. I will never forget you. My deepest condolences to your family. Pien

Rest in peace Frau Marek. It´s so hard to believe you are not with us anymore. I will never forget what an amazing teacher you were. You were the type of person that left lasting memories for many. Always going above and beyond with everything you taught and it was with passion, dedication, and an abundance of energy. You never gave up on things. For me, you were an inspiration.

I remember taking the German language class at Hogan High School in 10th grade. You were the new teacher, but by far my favorite. You had provided a once in a lifetime experience for me. To travel to Germany and I will never forget that experience. It was one of the highlights in my life. All the determination and preparation to go. From learning the language, fundraising, and hosting German students before we went there for our exchange program. I still share that experience with my family and friends. I´m so thankful that you were my teacher because you took learning a new level. Du wirst immer einen besonderen Platz in meinem Herzen haben.

My condolences to the family.

Frau who is one of the most genuine and loving teachers you could ever ask for.
She made learning German fun! I recall her having this special love for Johnny Depp`s, or or she just used him as a way to teach us words surrounding love, family and friendships.
One of my favorite parts was when we were learning the words chair and table, and she would have us stand on the chair & table.
She had a very fun & unconventional way of teaching, but it worked. I am in my 30s and I still speak German because of her. I have taught it to my daughter and we use it as our special thing that no one else around us knows.
She will forever be remembered I missed!
Ich Liebe Dich Frau!

My favorite teacher by far. One of the kindest, most genuine souls I've ever had the pleasure of encountering. An absolute honor to have learned from Frau. Some of my strongest friendships were formed in her class. Rest Easy, Königin.

Frau was one of my favorite teachers from high school. Always full of energy and made class a fun time. She provided an open door to her classroom if I needed someplace warm before school started or just needed a place to relax. I'll never forget the wonderful memories and lessons you've taught us. Rest in peace <3

She helped me through so many things and I couldn't ever have asked for a better person in my life. She will be so sadly missed and I send all my prayers and love for the family. I'm so blessed to have had her in my life as were so many other people. She was one of the most amazing women I've ever met and I will love her endlessly always. I love you my Frau

Frau Marek was one of the greatest teachers I ever had the joy of meeting. She taught me so much about myself and about a language that I learned to love. The unerring support she provided in my quest to learn languages will never be forgotten. I still use the learning tools she provided and sing the songs she taught us regularly. Without Frau, I never would have learned how much I loved languages. She was a safe place to hide when the world became too much in highschool, and her support always meant the world to me. To say that she will be missed is the biggest understatement. My world is a better place because she was in it, and I will never forget the impact she had on me. I send my deepest condolences to her family and all those whose lives she touched. Rest at peace Frau. MFG, Tina
