Duff Danilovich Obituary

With sadness we announce the passing of Duff Danilovich, beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend to so many. He died peacefully in his home of cancer. He was known for his profoundly positive outlook on life, his joy in living life to the fullest, and his deep love of family and friends. His presence will be missed and he will live on through all of us.Duff was born on August 6th, 1942 in Sacramento, CA to his parents Mary and Larry (Lazar) Danilovich. He grew up in the gold country foothills in Jackson, CA with his two younger siblings John and Jeanie. He attended Jackson High School where his father was principal. He played tennis, football, track, and basketball and won the "Best All-Around Athlete" award as well as graduated valedictorian of his class in 1960. His family was extremely active in the Amador County community and shared a great love of the outdoors. They all enjoyed camping, hiking, swimming, and skiing. He earned the honor of Eagle Scout with the Boy Scouts. He later mentored his nephew Connor in achieving the same goal.He went on to study History and English at UC Berkeley where his mother had attended and his siblings later would as well.He played clarinet in theCal marching band and loved being a part of the Lamda Chi Alpha Fraternity. He received his teaching certificate at UC Berkeley as well and then went on to Northern Colorado University for a Masters in History and then to University of Arizona for work towards a doctorate in History, and later his Counseling and Administrative Services Credentials at CSU Hayward. He began his educational career in 1967 at Ygnacio Valley High School in Walnut Creek as a history teacher and swim coach. He then worked as a counselor at Northgate High School, an Assistant Principal at San Ramon Valley High and California High before culminating his career as Principal of Los Cerros Middle School for 19 years. There he was honored as Outstanding Educator of the Year. After retirement he continued coaching and mentoring new administratorsfrom 2004 to 2016.He met his wife of 56 years, Claire, while they were both working for the summer in Lake Tahoe and they would later marry in 1967. As a young history teacher, Duff and Claire stimulated the travel bug when they chaperoned students on cultural study programs in several countries in Europe. Later they would travel on their own in a hippie VW van for a year through Europe and beyond. They came home and started their family having two daughters Shannon and Sarah. From then on they traveled all over the world to Africa to Central and South America, Asia and the US. Duff loved to stay active and to be in nature. He loved tennis and played at Cal and was competitive in tournaments for decades. He spent every winter skiing and snowboarding. In the last 12 years he took up Pickleball and became an avid player, traveling for tournaments and enjoying the incredible community of friends he made. He hiked extensively and climbed Mt. Shasta, Mt. Whitney, the Inca Trail to Machu Pichu, Half Dome, and more. He loved swimming and snorkeling in Maui and he and Claire took their whole family there every year. Reading and sharing books was another favorite pastime and he was involved in several book clubs. He spent the last several years reading to his 4 grandchildren - he always had an ongoing book with each one. Duff is lovingly remembered by his wife Claire, daughters Shannon Hopkins (Abraham), and Sarah French (Cash), grandchildren Jake & Jesse Hopkins, Finnegan Duff & Ferryn French, brother John, sister Jeanie, cousins, niece and nephews and many friends and colleagues. To honor his memory donations can be made to two organizations of his choice: Walnut Creek Pickleball Club (walnutcreekpickleballclub.com) and Contra Costa Library (ccclib.org/donate/)

I played clarinet with Duff in the Cal Band many decades ago. He was a great guy then and I regret we never maintained a friendship after leaving Cal. All the best to his loving family.

I taught school for 37 years, many years at Los Cerros. Duff was an admin at Monte Vista High while I was there, too. I had many administrators. Duff was by far one of the best if not the best.

Mr D was my principal in middle school. He always stood out as a good man. I occasionally found myself on the wrong side of the law (so to speak) at Los Cerros, but I can say that Mr D was always exceedingly fair and reasonable.

That might sound simple, but I think it´s difficult to do when 13-year-olds are constantly testing your limits. At least he stood out as uncommonly calm and patient in my juvenile mind.

RIP, Mr. D. You´ll be missed.

Duff will be missed as a smiling, enthusiastic, kind and caring neighbor and friend. He lived to the age of 80 without ever getting old.
I remember his last words to me. I was hoofing up the hill to the house and he shouted to me "Hey Val, stand up straight ". Ever the coach. I will remember him as an encouraging guy who loved his family and his life.
My love and condolences to Claire and Shannon and Sarah.

Claire and girls, I was saddened to read about the loss of Duff. He was such a great guy. My late husband , Chuck, loved to play doubles with him. I think they won a couple of tournaments. Duff got a great kick out of the time they beat Terry Warford and his partner. The sky is a little less bright today with him gone. God Bless, Lee Jordan

I met Duff through Pickleball in 2012. He was a true athlete, teacher, and leader of our club in Walnut Creek. He became a close friend, giving advice on the court or thoughtful help with life´s many issues. He cared deeply about his wife Claire, his daughters, and his many many friends. I can´t imagine this world without him, that smile and the joy of living he gave all of us.
I will always think of him with a smile on my face

Such a dynamic man, Duff. We knew him through pickleball and admired him and his partner winning a gold against our silver, in years past. A true athlete and gentleman!

Mr. Danilovich was a wonderful principal and person. My children respected and admired him. Every educator should love their job as much as he did. I am so grateful my children and I had the privilege of knowing him. Our sincere condolences to his family and friends. He is a true loss to everyone who knew him.

Duff was a friend for 40 years. First we played tennis together at Heather Farms and later he was my pickleball mentor. He took the time and effort to teach me all about the sport. He was very kind and caring. I will miss him deeply.

I remember Mr. Danilovich fondly as I taught GATE at his Los Cerros for a while in the 1980's, and my children also attended that wonderful middle school. He was greatly respected and loved by his students and their parents. My heart goes out to all the family.

Mr. D! What a legend. He embraced our group of irreverent teenagers and directed our energy into something great: a lifelong love of skiing. It all started with a 1986 roadtrip to Sun Valley and endures to this day. Duff was a true ripper: yes he was our middle school principal but his turns were perfect and we identified with him as a friend and an inspiration. It's a privilege to be part of his legacy.

I have a fond memory of my brother-in-law Duff Danilovich. As everyone knows, Duff had a love for all things sports. He and I were skiing Heavenly Valley together one day many years ago. It was a cold and stormy day -- not my favorite ski weather. As we were riding the chair back up the mountain, the snowfall was increasing. I looked at Duff, and he had icicles hanging from his mustache, and he had a big grin on his face -- he was truly in his element.

Rest in peace Duff! You were my favorite aministrator and pricipal of all time. The Ski trips to Sun Valley and British Columbia were legendary back in the day. You shaped a lot of what I am today with your mentorship and I know many of the Los Cerros guys would echo that sentiment for sure. Fair winds sir....

Duff made people feel good. About life, themselves, others, the world... he had a way about him. So special and kind. He knew the secret to kids and young adults. His absence here will be felt for sure. Love to all of you.

Mr. Danilovich was my favorite teacher at Ygnacio Valley High School. Now I know why he didn't make it to our 50 Year Class Reunion last month. RIP
