Joan Danilovich Obituary

Joan Marie Danilovich Aug. 6, 1943-Feb. 11, 2011 Long-time Peninsula resident and devoted teacher at Roosevelt Elementary School in Burlingame, died on February 11 after a valiant struggle with cancer. Although Joan had no children of her own, she was much appreciated for her gentle, understanding and nurturing approach as a teacher of young boys and girls. She followed in the footsteps of her mother and sister, and many other relations, who were all education professionals. Joan graduated with a degree in Education from San Jose State in 1965 where she was a member of Alpha Phi Sorority and began her teaching career shortly thereafter. Two years later, Joan had the opportunity to work for California Congressman Jerry Waldie in Washington, DC. Upon her return to California, Joan resumed her teaching at Burlingame and was married for a time to Fred Lauer. After her retirement from teaching, Joan remained active in the community and in the course of her day she often encountered former students and parents and even her former student's children. She was sincerely gratified by their continued friendship. Joan was the beloved daughter of Jack and Alice Danilovich (deceased) and the sister of Diane Sheffield (deceased) and John Danilovich of London, and aunt of several nieces and nephews. Joan will be greatly missed by them, their families and an untold number of her extended family. Friends and family are invited to a Memorial Mass at 10:30 am on Friday, February 25th at St Catherine of Siena Church at 1310 Bayswater Avenue, Burlingame. Family requests donations to Sutter VNA & Hospice, 700 S. Claremont St., Suite 220, San Mateo, CA 94402, www.suttervnahospice.org/gifts

A friend in high school now 50 years ago, Joan was always a positive, happy person. I can't think of her without a smile on her face. I am so sorry to hear she succumbed to cancer; it must have been very difficult for both the family and her many students. May she rest in peace.

How can a person's life be summed up in a few short words or a couple of fleeting memories? It would be impossible to capture the vivid love of life that comes to mind when I think of Joan. We were classmates 50 years ago, and have not kept in touch, but just that name: Joan Danilovich, brings back floods of impressions of a happy girl, surrounded by friends, always up on the latest songs and fashions; of a compassionate person, ready to stand up for causes and to run for office in student government; as a part of a loving family who strongly supported one another, no matter what. She came from a long line of teachers, and had "teacher" embedded into her personality. She left her fingerprints, her ideals, and her love of living life to the fullest on all she touched. What a legacy! What a privilege to have known her! Thank You, Heavenly Father, for allowing us to enjoy the precious gift of Your daughter, Joan, as You loaned her to us for a brief moment of life on this earth. May she delight You fully as she celebrates her Graduation into Your presence!

Joanie went to junior and senior high school with me and was in my wedding. I haven't seen her in years but remember her bubbly personality and pretty smile. John, I remember you as a young boy and I'm sorry for your loss - the last one of your family.

Ms. Danilovich was my favorite teacher at Roosevelt - she always made learning so much fun! Specifically fractions - I recall students bringing in cakes from home, sitting in a group and slicing the cake - first in half, then in quarters and then in eighths. Ms. Danilovich was so creative, warm and caring. I always enjoyed bumping in to her around Burlingame, San Mateo and at the Roosevelt chili cook off - always remembering her former students.

Ms Danilovich was such a wonderful person and really made a difference in my life. She made us all feel happy and took an interest in our lives. I was from an unhappy family background and her cheerfulness made up for that. Because of her, I looked forward to coming to school every day.

I have many fond memories of my 2nd grade experience with Ms. Danilovich. She really made learning fun. I will always remember those great times in her classroom. Francie (Freethy) Perkins

Ms. Danilovich was my Second Grade teacher in 1975. She left a great impression on me and thankfully my mom kept in touch with her all these years. She was friendly, down-to-earth and always so stylish in appearance. I'm glad she isn't suffering any longer.
