THOMAS PHILLIPS Obituary

Thomas Grant Phillips, a longtime local educator and coach, has passed at age 86. His purpose in life was to teach and motivate young people and he accomplished this for his own children and those of others. In a remarkable feat, he was able to coach Bullard High School swimmers before the school even had a pool. Tom was born in 1929 to Mabel and Tulsa Phillips in Tulsa, OK. He came to Tulare, CA in 1936, and graduated from Tulare High School in 1947. He attended Fresno State University and graduated with a degree in Industrial Arts in 1953. In 1952, he married Marilynn Eubank, whom he met at age 13. They lived down the street from each other and Tom had a secret whistle to let Marilynn know he was passing by her house. His first teaching post was at Fowler High School. In his 35-year career with Fresno Unified School District, he was a teacher and later an administrator at Bullard, Roosevelt and Hoover High Schools. Every year without fail, past swimmers still called "Coach" on his birthday. It was his joy. His family is certain that there are now swim lessons in heaven, and that he's fishing with Dick Hoe. He was preceded in death by his brother, Jay Phillips. Tom is survived by Marilynn, his wife of 64 years; his children and their spouses, Lori Phillips and Lee Porter, Lyndi and Kevin Marchese, Grant and Mary Phillips and Julie and Kevin Randles; grandchildren, Kelly Noecker, Gregory and Grayson Marchese, Delaney and Sawyer Randles; and brothers, Jerry and Jack Phillips. Many thanks to his loving caregivers, Yolanda, Lyuda, Angela and Aggie. Please visit our family's memorial website at thomasgrantphillips.com and leave a comment.

Not sure what to say?

April 5, 2016

I wish to add my own tribute and fond respects to the memories of Tom, as well as to his family. Tom was a fellow educator in Fresno Unified, and I remember him most of all for his positive attitude and the powerful influence he had on students, including my own children. His loss does not only impact his fine family, but greatly saddens friends, acquaintances, ex-students and former colleagues. Rest in peace, Tom. You've left a legacy that will long be a source of pride to your family.

I first became aware of Tom Phillips when he rented a room from our friends Joe and Jane Bolkavatz while he studied Industrial Arts at Fresno State. I was 12 years old at the time. I later attended Bullard High School, where he coached my Class of 1962 friends Doug Bradford and Jan Zealer. He was a great coach.

May he rest in peace.

I first met "dad" back in the early 2000's. Since i was the same age as his kids i was immediately thought of that way. He always had a smile on his face and a laugh that was contagious.Wwe gave him a Bi-Plane ride out here (with a T-Shirt) and you would of thought i had given him a million dollars. That's just the way he was. Little things meant a lot to him. He wore the T-Shirt proudly. I will miss him. I'm so sorry for your loss. He had a great life and lived longer than most. I also believe people that are connected to you never really go away. Memories also cannot be taken away. Those are forever. If you guys need anything you know how where i am. "Mom" hang in there. Remember the good times. love judy

Coach Phillips ~
What a great swimming coach to us at Bullard, a good man, a good husband to Marilyn, a good father to his children and always with an easy smile. He will be missed by many.
Love you, Coach!

Tom was our neighbor for 28 years. He was always ready to help others including us. He was a positive, caring, giving person. Always had a good word and a smile. He talked to the kids in the neighborhood in a way that they listened. We will miss him greatly. I was fortunate to have been able to spend a little time with him this past fall. Vaya con dois tom.
