SIDNEY CASSIN Obituary

CASSIN, SIDNEY

Dr. Sidney Cassin, 82, of Gainesville, FL passed away October 18, 2010 at Oak Hammock SNF after suffering a stroke in August.

He was born June 8, 1928 in Chelsea, Massachusetts to Minnie and Morris Cassin, who settled in the Boston area as immigrants from Russia. He married his high school sweetheart, Barbara who passed away October 17, 2009.

Sidney received his undergraduate degree in psychology from NYU and PhD in physiology from the University of Texas. They moved in 1957 to Gainesville where he was an associate professor in the newly established medical school at the University of Florida. He taught renal physiology to the medical students and was fondly known as "Sidney the kidney". His area of research was in perinatal pulmonary physiology, where he studied the transition of the pulmonary circulation at birth. He published numerous articles and lectured internationally throughout his long and distinguished career.

Sidney was on the admissions committee for UF's medical school for many years and was an advocate and mentor for many of his students, who might otherwise have not fulfilled their dreams of becoming physicians. He was a brilliant researcher, dedicated professor and an incredible husband and father to his family.

Sidney is survived by his four daughters, Robin (Allan) Robuck of Orlando; Nancy (Israel) Winikor of Gainesville; Lisa (William) Wilkerson of Newberry; Kim (Robert) Mulholland of Mobile, AL and his eight grandchildren, Michael, Benjamin and Yoni Robuck, Jared and Chelsea Winikor, Robert, Rebecca and Jennifer Mulholland.

Funeral Service will be held at Congregation B'nai Israel 3830 NW 16th Blvd. on Thursday, October, 21, 2010 at 3:00 p.m., with Rabbi David Kaiman officiating. Interment to follow at B'nai Israel Cemetery, University Avenue and Waldo Road.

Arrangements are under the care of WILLIAMS-THOMAS FUNERAL HOME DOWNTOWN 404 North Main Street.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Congregation B'nai Israel, 3830 NW 16th Blvd. Gainesville, FL 32605 or Haven Hospice, 4200 NW 90th Blvd. Gainesville, FL 32606.

To My Counsins,

May we all celebrate the life and cherish the memories of your Dad (and Mom) forever. Your pain will heal with time. Dave and I wish we could be there to remember with you, and begin the path to healing.

(However, I am ill, and my doctor told me just today (Wednesday), that I am to stay home, for I am still contagious.)

Thinking of Each of You,
Traci (Maia) & Dave Starkweather
