Yesterday
My day began thinking and reflecting on our thirty plus years of friendship first, work association second. I then wept, smiled, and burst into blubbery laughter. Soon after, I felt your soul soaring upwards of light speed. Upon getting to know you initially, it was very clear that your spirit and vibe is magnetic. I now realize that being in your presence made everyone better and enlightened. You are a Master of craft, a skilled illustrator, a truth seeker, a truth speaker, and a loving humanitarian. I wiil proceed to live in your influence and example, as it would be honorable for all of us to be remembered in the same Love and Light that you are!

Kevin was the only boss I didn´t dread seeing on Monday mornings. Kevin always joking, always trying to see the bright side of things. Sharing our fondness for old episodes of "Davey & Goliath." I´ll miss our occasional phone calls. Love you, Kevvy Kev.

Working with and knowing Kevin through the years since 1988, his is the face that always made me smile. He is The Brother who was always there through thick and thin. After a hard shoot day, he always found the best way to help us unwind. Whether it was his uncanny and hilarious imitation of Marcus Garvey in that famous photo or ingeniously crafting a lifelike imitation of my Gaffer, Charles Houston, broken arm in a cast and all, right down to his wire frame glasses! Kevin is a joyous genius who always loved his family, his work and his life. I miss You, My Brother.

I´ve heard Kevin passed in happiness, deep in the love of his family and close to his roots. How appropriate for a man I don´t recall having seen without a smile. A smile that brought all in, as he respected all.
In some ways, Kevin was destined to be a union man. Not in any limiting sense, but with regard to his appreciation of community.
An appreciation of how we all belonged, how we could all make this a better place.
Which he did.
Farewell, my friend. Rest in peace.

# A Tribute to Kevin Ladson
*By Monty Ross*
I can see a young company across the Brooklyn Bridge taking shape. I know because I was driving the production van full of equipment for the 16mm film we made in 1982. From that film came many more, but from those films came hungry young crew members like Kevin Ladson who wanted to make sure a young company could continue to make its mark and 40 Acres and a Mule Filmworks grew because of solid creatives like Kevin.
A filmmaker himself, Kevin had a solid working knowledge of the industry. This turned into a key prop master position that would define not just his career, but the very foundation of our creative endeavors. Kevin wasn´t just someone who handled props-he was someone who understood the soul of storytelling, who knew that every object on screen carried weight, meaning, and the power to transform a scene.
In those early days, when we were scraping together budgets and dreaming bigger than our bank accounts, Kevin was the steady hand that made magic happen. He had an eye for detail that could turn the mundane into the meaningful, the ordinary into the extraordinary. A simple chair became a throne, a worn briefcase became a symbol of ambition, a street corner prop became a portal to another world. Kevin understood that in filmmaking, everything matters-and he made everything matter.
What set Kevin apart wasn´t just his technical skill or his ability to source the impossible on an impossible budget. It was his unwavering commitment to the vision. He believed in what we were building across that Brooklyn Bridge, in the stories we were desperate to tell, and in the community we were creating one frame at a time. When others might have seen chaos in our ambitious young company, Kevin saw possibility. When others might have seen limitations in our resources, Kevin saw opportunities for innovation.
His transition from crew member to key prop master wasn´t just a career move-it was a testament to his dedication and growth. Kevin earned his position not through connections or luck, but through consistent excellence, creative problem-solving, and an ability to anticipate what the story needed before anyone else even realized it was missing.
Kevin´s legacy lives on in every film that followed, in every carefully chosen prop that helped tell our stories, and in the standard of excellence he set for everyone who worked alongside him. He showed us that supporting the vision doesn´t mean staying in the background-it means elevating every element until the whole becomes greater than its parts.
The young company that took shape across the Brooklyn Bridge grew into something remarkable, and Kevin Ladson was instrumental in that transformation. His passion, professionalism, and unwavering commitment to the craft helped build the foundation upon which countless stories would be told.
Kevin understood that filmmaking is collaborative art, and he was the kind of collaborator every filmmaker dreams of-reliable, creative, and completely dedicated to bringing the vision to life. His contribution to our journey will never be forgotten.

Kevin worked on a couple of music videos I directed in the 90´s and we didn´t get to know each other well but we chatted while working and I could see he was a class act and a great guy, very focused and a fellow creative. Back in 2014 he made this sketch of me based on a photo I´d posted on FB and he shared it with me. I was surprised and blown away by his ability to draw so well and he shared other sketches with me he did all well done and I was impressed by his skills and I told him.
Thanks again Kev!
Condolences to the Ladson family and thank you for sharing Kevin with us

I am in shock. Kevin facebooked me on August 5th, just a few days ago. We shared the same birthday. I reminded him every year of how much joy he brought to the entire crew when he serenaded me in the lunch room on the set of Beloved. He brought me and many others to tears. I had not been able to fully celebrate my Birthday because my father had transitioned on my birthday two years earlier. Kevin put the spotlight on me instead of himself It was a day I will always cherish. Precious and priceless memories.

I'm still shocked by the news-gone too soon, Kevin. I´ll always cherish the memories of our Queens crew-Kevin, Henry, and me-heading to the diner on Merrick Blvd and talking all night long into the next day. I believe we first met on the set of Spike Lee´s Love Supreme (later Mo´ Better Blues) and shared nearly three decades of friendship. Being part of the Forty Acres and a Mule experience alongside so many other Black filmmakers was a true honor.
Rest in peace, my brother.

Kev Kev, you asked me to call you, "friends call me Kev Kev... that's my name. I have so many words, so many memories, those long conversations, the laughs, sometimes I'd say something and you'd laugh over the phone for so long you'd be in tears...We are all going to miss you terribly. All my love to Natalie and the girls, Auntie Daisy, your grandson, to everyone out there who revered you, loved you. There are so many years, so many stories, memories, moments, but most of all there is your humanity, your huge heart and your incredible sense of humor. Then there is the endless love you have for Natalie and your girls, your grandson. Your life was larger than anyone I've ever known, there will be so much more to say in time but for now, I leave you with a photo that you sent recently, which I love. Condolences to all of your family, the friends, the people in this world who loved you, all of our mutual friends, I send all my love and light. God bless you Kev Kev, God bless your family during this incredibly painful and difficult time.

I met Kevin on the set of Crooklyn my first job
I didn´t know much about how production work
Kevin stood up for me when some underhanded business they were trying to do to me
Not knowing me he made sure I was taken advantage of
That was the kind of guy he was
Thru out years we had a great friendship
He always had a uplifting personality and he made everyone around him feel the same no matter what they were going through
My sincere condolences goes out to his family and friends
He will be missed by so many
