Herbert Shedroff Obituary

Herbert Shedroff, son of Edward and Rose Shedroff, loving husband, father and grandfather, died on Sunday at St. Francis Hospital in Hartford, Conn. He was 89. Herb was born and grew up in Colchester, Conn. After graduating from Bacon Academy in 1951, he enlisted in the Navy and served through 1955. On his return, he devoted his life to education, attending Willimantic State Teachers College (now Eastern Connecticut State University), graduating in 1959. He taught science in East Hampton and went on to become principal of Gilead Hill Elementary School in Hebron. He spent 25 years, from 1969 to 1994, as the principal of Dominick F. Burns Elementary School in Hartford. On the occasion of his retirement from Burns, the Hartford Courant ran a profile of Herb. Students and colleagues praised him as a steady force, a role model who took the reins of an overcrowded school at the tail end of the turbulent 1960s. He was, they said, the first person in in the mornings, the last to leave in the evenings. "He's the captain of the ship," a colleague said. "If something goes wrong and he's there, you know everything's going to be fine." In the Courant, as well as in a 1989 story in The New York Times about economic disparities in Connecticut schools, Herb is described as always having his door open to students and his eyes open to the challenges they confronted. He was proud of an addition to Burns that was completed in 1992 and dedicated in his honor. The expansion made possible, for the first time in Herb's tenure, for all Burns students to learn under the same roof. "Public schools are merely a portion of society, so if there are problems in a societal setting, it's a reflection of the school," Herb told the Courant. "We can't become part of the problem. We can't express fear. Our rule is to be a solution to the problem." In his retirement, Herb continued to work as a student teacher supervisor at the University of Saint Joseph and the University of Hartford. Known for his firm handshake, quick wit and direct, no-nonsense approach with people, Herb was a devoted fan of the Boston Red Sox and New England Patriots. He loved animals, especially his cats Yogi and Boo-Boo. He walked five miles a day. Herb will be missed by his wife Harriet, of West Hartford; his son Mike Shedroff and his husband Linwood, of Windsor; his daughter Lisa Cooper and her husband Chuck, of Narbeth, Penn.; his stepchildren Susan Wilkinson and Melissa Kirsch; and his grandchildren Eric Schlesinger, Daniel Schlesinger and Emma Wilkinson. A graveside service will be held on Thurs., May 19, at 11:00 a.m. at Fairview Cemetery, 200 Whitman Ave., West Hartford.

Herb and I worked together to run the St. Joseph College Summer School program for many years. He was a mentor and a friend to me. I enjoyed his company very much and looked forward to each summer when we would work together. He was a wonderful and caring man and dynamic educator.

My heartfelt condolences to his family. He has left a fine imprint on this world and will be forever remembered in my heart.

Mr. Shedroff was my first ever principal at my first job after graduating in education from Central. He was so supportive and understanding of my nervousness as a first year teacher. Every time I went into the office, Mr. Shedroff was always there to answer any questions. He went out of his way to get what I needed.

With the advent of Facebook, I became Facebook friends with his niece Sharon through channels of other friends from Colchester. It was nice finding someone who was familiar with Mr. Shedroff and what a wonderful man he was.

I will never forget how he helped me to shape my first year as a teacher. My condolences to his wife, children, and rest of his family. G-d Bless you all.

I am a Hartford Schools employee and as such received Herb's obituary notice. I am also a West Hartford resident. I recognized his (smiling) face as two of my children attended summer programs at St Joseph's years ago. Herb was the most awesome greeter; always a smile, always a kind word, joke, or piece of wisdom.

I am so sorry for your loss. He was the most lovely man. Take care.

Herb Shedroff was the real deal. He was always there to support us teachers regardless of the situation. He may have ruled with a strong hand but the most loving heart completed the package. He was a gift to us teachers, parents, and students. his memory will always be a blessing to me.

My siblings & I all went to Burns where Mr Shedroff was our principal since K-6 grade. Mr Shedroff was strict but fair. We knew exactly what to expect from him. He had high expectations for us all. The best principal we ever had. He knew all his kids & their parents too. As an adult, I can remember how funny he was & I can appreciate how much he cared for us. Our most deepest condolences to his family for this great loss. May he rest in heavenly peace. His students--the Delmorals- Sasha, Stephen, Candido, Catherine & Ayleen

As the Coordinator of Student Teaching at the University of Hartford I only met and worked with Herb after his wonderful teaching and principalship years. As a Student Teacher Supervisor, Herb positively impacted the thinking and teaching of dozens of current classroom teachers throughout Connecticut and this country. Today the education community has lost a valuable asset, however we are thankful that we had the benefit of his wisdom and caring heart. Thank you Mr. Shedroff for your many years of service and very big heart.
