Walter Hurley Obituary

Walter "Doc" Hurley, Sr., 91 of Hartford, beloved husband of the late Gwendolyn (Bannister) Hurley, passed away Sunday, February 9, 2014. Born in Albany, Georgia, son of the late William and Willie( Smith) Hurley, Doc was raised in Hartford and graduated from his beloved Weaver High School. He went on to receive his undergraduate degree from Virginia State University, his Masters Degree from Springfield College, and his Third Year Certificate in Education Administration. During college he joined the US Marine Corp and served during World War II. He began his teaching and coaching career at I.C.Norcom High School in Virginia moving back to Hartford in 1959 to teach Physical Education at Northeast Jones School. It was after the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King; Doc was asked to come to Weaver High School to work with the students and retired in 1984 as Assistant Principal. Doc's gentle ways and calming influence, combined with his motivated encouragement through sports, helped him to inspire and influence the lives of literally thousands of young students throughout his career. He was part of founding of the Doc Hurley Foundation in 1975 which has helped hundreds of young people continue their education and sports careers. He was a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. and the recipient of dozens of sports and community service awards but none that equaled the love and appreciation that Doc carried in his heart from the gratitude of the students he was able to give a hand up. Doc leaves his two daughters Cordelia Costley and her husband Alexander of West Hartford and Muriel Hurley of Hartford; two grandchildren Stacey Hurley Cloud of Farmington and Michael Hurley of Beverly Hills, CA; three great grandchildren Nailah, Sanford, and Prescott; and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, and extended family. Besides his wife, Doc was predeceased by his son Walter J. "Doc" Hurley, Jr. The public is invited to calling hours Monday, Feb 17, 2014 from 3-6 PM at the Faith Congregational Church, 2030 Main Street, Hartford and again Tuesday, February 18, from 10-10:45AM prior to his Funeral Service at 11 AM at the church. Burial will follow with military honors at Mount St. Benedict Cemetery, Bloomfield. Contributions may be made to the Faith Congregational Church, 2030 Main Street, Hartford, CT 06120. Doc Hurley ... What is one to say? The ultimate gentleman sportsman and athlete. To measure his life and contributions to the youth and the world ... one word 'priceless'. We are all the better for having shared a snapshot in time with him. I am so honored to have walked on the planet with such a Man. Thank you Walter (Doc) Hurley, Sr.

Mahatma Ghandi said, "Be the change you want to see in the world." I'm not sure if Doc Walter J Hurley, Sr ever read that, but he surely lived it. I first met Doc in the late '50's at a Hartford Park Dept Pee Wee basketball tournament. He was the ref and I was afraid of him because he was the largest man I had ever met. He gathered both teams at half-court before the game and his unique basso profundo voice was warm, friendly and inspiring - made you want to be like him and do something to make him proud of you. I think we Goodwin Park Pee Wees took a whuppin that day, but Doc spoke to both teams after the game and said you are all winners for being here and you should be proud for being here and giving it your best effort. I would bump into Doc on occasion over the next 60 years (the last time was a long visit in August, 2013)and, like a fine wine, he improved with time. He certainly had to deal with more than his share of discrimination, disappointment, heartbreak and the normal slings and arrows of life, but they didn't make him bitter - they made him better. Yes, he would mention how he had wanted to be a coach, but I think he realized being a coach would have limited the enormous positive effect he had on generations of boys and girls and men and women fortunate enough to have met him. As a Vice Principal his influence exceeded the bounds of any athletic field. And the athletic coaches of his generation in Hartford - Horvath, Bazzano, Kubachka, Scelza - and the next generation - Reilly, Griffin, Tolliver, Waterman, and so many others will to a man tell you that Doc was a coach's Coach. Doc's influence was not limited to athletes, he coached boys into men, and girls into women. His basso profundo influence continue to echo through the generations. And all who were touched by Doc will continue to live the life of loving kindness that he personified. Let us all try to be more like Doc - to make the world a kinder and more loving place, the kind of change in the world that Doc personified. You are always within us, Doc, and you were a credit to your race - the human race.

The first time I saw you Mr. Hurley Sir , it was at a Basketball Court up in the attic of The old "North West Jones School" ,there is where you held gym classes, with a small turn table that played instructions for all of us to follow as you sat down , to do your paper work in that little office, you would call out, " Alex "," you know how to flip the record, you don't have to wait for me", that was back in July of 1964, well Mr. Hurley and graduated class walk across the street into ,"Big Weaver High", a few years later ,I join the U.S. Marines, and my first visit home ,before Viet Nam, I when to see you ,at your House, a short visit with and Mrs. and you gave your blessings , and off I when, with my Doc. Hurley Shield, just like a father would, you see I didn't have a father and your were the closest person I had with a Father figure, you're leaving a proud adopted-son, with beautiful memories, Championships together with love, for men kind, thank You Mr. Hurley. Sir. job well done...Rest in Peace, Sir.

I often visited with Doc Hurley when I came to Hartford. In 2012 I attended the 55th Weaver High School Reunion and took time to visit with Doc at his home. He was mentally strong and in good spirits, but physically he was not in good shape. We talked for a long time about the early days and the exciting basketball that was played at Weaver when we won two Connecticut State Championships and the New England Championship at the old Boston Garden in 1957. Doc was an exceptional individual who gave much of himself to the youth of Hartford in the 50s and 60s, then developed the Doc Hurley Foundation to provide needy students with scholarships in later years.

GOOD NIGHT AND SO LONG NOBLE WARRIOR, YOUR WORK HAS BEEN SUPERB. NOW THOSE YOU HAVE AFFECTED MUST CARRY THE TORCH TO CONTINUE THE WORK THAT NEEDS TO BE DONE.

My memories of Doc go back to the late 50's when he worked for the City of Hartford Park Department at Keney Park.He was my first basketball coach,a mentor, and a true hero in my life. He stayed and worked at the park when we had away games but always sent us of with a pep talk that ended with his booming voice yelling, "Now go bring home the bacon!". It was also his calming voice that helped hold the City of Hartford together during some turbulent times. All of us lost one of the greatest men the city has ever had. His legend will live forever. God bless you Doc. Rest in Peace.
