David Doheny Obituary

David Armour Doheny
July 2, 1931 - March 1, 2022
Miami, Florida - David Armour Doheny, 90, a resident of Miami since 1965, passed away March 1, 2022.
David was born July 2, 1931, in Cobourg, Ont., to Clarence Wm. Doheny and Kate Douglas Armour. He attended Williams College, graduating cum laude. He joined the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in 1953 and, following his service, attended Harvard Law School. In 1965, he moved to Miami to serve as General Counsel and V.P. of General Development Corporation. Upon leaving General Development, David entered public service as an Assistant State Attorney, and later became a federal prosecutor at the U.S. Attorneys' Office in Miami. From 1985 to 1996, David served as V.P. and General Counsel for the National Trust for Historic Preservation in Washington DC. In 1996, David's book about David Finley was published. Finley was the founding chairman of the National Trust and first director of the National Gallery of Art.
David loved the arts, serving as V.P. of the Miami Philharmonic, 1970 – 1982 and Vice Chair of Dade County Council of Arts and Sciences, 1976 – 1980. In 1979, he was proud to have completed the first Orange Bowl Marathon. He was a vestry member for both St. Stephens Episcopal Church and the Chapel of the Venerable Bede, and a choir member in both churches. David was a liaison between the Chapel and Miami's Chapman Partnership, providing food for the homeless.
David is survived by his wife Tess, children John Doheny, Jennifer Quinton, Brett Bibeau, and 7 grandchildren. He is lovingly remembered by family and friends for his love of God, family, country, and community.
A memorial service will be held on March 19 at 3:00 o'clock at the Chapel of the Venerable Bede, 1150 Stanford Drive, Coral Gables 33146. Donations would be welcomed at the Chapel.

We are related to the Doheny family through marriage ... we shared both American & Canadian heritage.....
I met with David about 10-years ago at the Detroit Public Library where he confirmed our heritage ...
My grandfather James Patrick Valentine Donnelly was David´s mothers father I believe.
David was a kind, & wonderful man of God

David and I were friends since 1970 and remained in contact throughout his life. A fine man, generous and kind, as well as an intellect to match my own, he will be missed.

I never really "knew" Mr. Doheny. I worked at General Development many years ago as a young mortgage processor, and often had to take things to him in his large, impressive office. I always felt intimidated and small in those surroundings, yet this man always greeted me as though I was an important visitor - polite and kind to me. He always asked how I was doing and made me feel more than a mediocre clerk! Many years later, I was the assistant to a federal judge and he came to chambers a few times. He exhibited the same gentlemanly qualities I remembered from my General Development days. The world has lost a gentleman - God rest his soul. My deepest condolences to his family and close friends.

Dear Tessie,

My brother Frank sent me David´s obituary. I want to send you my love and deepest sympathy. I didn´t really know David, but I can picture him in my mind over at your mother´s house. I´m sure that he was a very special person. I have so many wonderful memories of being at your mother´s house. Our families spent a lot of time together. I cherish those memories.
I also just learned of Evi´s passing. My heart felt so heavy when I heard. I loved Evi. Losing your husband and sister in a matter of weeks has got to be very hard. I am so so sorry. May God bless you and be with you during these difficult times.

Love,

Elaine
