Jane, Brad, and Patricia…as you know I first met your husband/dad when I was in the 7th grade at Miami Springs Junior High. The year was 1957. Pat saw something in me that no other teacher had seen before. He took me under his wing and gave me private tutoring lessons in your home. He got me into the school work program and then into the Navy for 6 years.
Jane, you and Pat have followed my life all these years…once in a while when my life took a new direction I did not check on Pat as I should have, but you Jane were wonderful, always going the extra mile to see how my wife, Marcia and I were doing. We are so glad we were able to talk to you and Pat this past holiday.
My wife and I are deeply sorry for you loss. Pat was a special teacher and friend as you all were. I know I am a better person today because of him.

I knew Patrick for the last six years of his life, during which he was a regular worshipper at the Latin Mass at St. Robert Bellarmine Church. Pat was unswerving in his love for the faith and was a rare individual who frequently said "thank you," not only to Father Fishwick, but to others who were involved in organizing and promoting the Latin Mass. His sense of gratitude and appreciation was profound, a trait rarely found today. When we moved out of Miami a few months ago, Pat would call to tell us we were missed. Requiescat in pace.

My Grandpa - By Nicole
You've been in my life ever since I was young
Watching over me and everything I've done
Always caring for others instead of yourself
You are so special in so many ways
That's why I miss you to this day
Feeling as though I left you behind
You were the one I always ran to and whined
Staying up late eating cereal with sugar
We would always snuggle under the covers
Its kills me to think this day has come
The thought of your life being over and done
Alls I wanted was you to be there when I graduate
To applaud me and tell me I'm great
I try my best in school
And I owe it all to you
Always inspiring me, telling me I am going to go far in life
You told me to never give up, always try
Now I stand here feeling lost and alone
Starting to let my sensitive side show
Missing all the good times we had together
Nothing ever stops our fun not even the weather
I can't go to sleep unless I cry
Getting upset at having to say good-bye
I always told myself when you were sick not to worry because you'll get better
That you would fly through the sickness just like a feather
The main thing I want to know is why you?
Why did this have to happen to the greatest man I knew
An inspiration and uplifting spirit to everyone around.
I remember how happy you would get Every time we came down to visit
You always acted like seeing us was the best thing in the world
That always gave my heart the feeling of love and joy
I always loved to see you smile
Even though you hadn't had teeth the whole while
It hurts now to look back on these things
Because of all the memories it brings
All good memories, no bad
Just the thought that all I have is this makes me sad
Me and you always loved our breakfast
You would tell me we were going out to eat and I would get dressed so quick
I could go on forever and ever
We had so many nice times together
Never to be forgotten
But always remembered
I can't believe you left this world
But I'll always and forever be grandpa's lover girl.

I,Loran Bradford Dougherty, Jr., Age 11, wrote and read this tribute to my Grandpa at the viewing on Feb. 29, 2004.
My Grandfather was a very faithful Irish Catholic man. He never complained. If you asked for something, he would be right on it. He would give you whatever you wanted. You were always welcome to come to his house. He was always satisfied. Whatever he had, he was always happy with. He lived without his father almost the rest of his life. It was only his 13 brothers and sisters. But one of his brothers died at birth. So that meant the brothers and sisters had to bring back the money. He always gave me money for having a good report card or just because he wanted to. He had a lot of good life. He onored his country as most as he could. Every Sunday he would get up at 5 a.m. to get ready and go to church. I could remember him saying how proud he was of his family. I also was proud of him too. He was also a teacher and fought in the Navy and teached in the Navy. He was always there for me and sometimes I was not there for him. He always called and talked to me on my good and bad days. When I got a little older, I got busier and I got to see him less but he still loved me even though I could not see him all the time. He was every man any family would want. I just saw him the other day but now he is gone. I loved him so much and I still do. I know I cannot see him but he is still with us. I can remeber holding his hand just a day or 2 ago but now he's gone. I could go on and on but I know you guys and ladies want to get out of here. So now we gather here today.

Words couldn't express how I feel about losing my grandfather. He was a dedicated husband, father, and grandfather. He thought nothing of putting someone elses needs before his own. I remember all the good times my sister and I had living in the house with grandma and grandpa. Things may never seem the same, but I understand that god was ready for him. To my family who are still mourning heavily I love you all and just know that he is with us all forever and always smiling and shining down on us. My grandfather was a beautiful man and will be missed by many. I didn't realize how many lives he touched throughout his life and I am thankful that he impacted everyone he met. Grandpa, I will miss you more than you could've ever expected and my heart feels torn in two. I will always be your firstborne lovergirl. I WILL LOVE YOU ALWAYS.

There are some teachers that leave you with fond memories. Mr. Dougherty, you were one of those teachers. I am truly saddened with your passing. You gave me so much strength and the ability to do whatever I set my mind to do. You will always have a place in my heart. My prayers are with your family during this difficult time. I am so very proud to have had the pleasure of being a student in your classroom.

It is difficult to know where to begin to express my memories of Mr. Dougherty. He was my ninth grade TV Civics teacher. I am now 54 years of age, a wife and a mother of two grown sons. TV Civics was held in a large non-air-conditioned auditorium of what was then called Miami Springs Junior High School. As a guestimate, there were probably 200 students in the class. We all watched the television monitors, but Mr. Dougherty was our teacher. Many, many times and just as early as last week since those days (I was 13), I have referred to the way in which Mr. Dougherty conducted that large class. In addition to his teaching of Civics, he taught us, through the use of his overhead projecter and his hearty energy, to stand and sing this Country's patriotic songs i.e. "Oh Columbia the Gem of the Ocean," "We Are Marching to Pretoria," "This Land is My Land," etc. During those years, our student population had begun to grow with the attendance of Cuban students. Mr. Dougherty got the words in Spanish to the Cuban National Anthem and again, through the use of the overhead projecter and a few of the Cuban students to lead us, we all learned and sang the words. One day he even asked us what our favorite songs of the day were and let us all sing together, "Sugar Shack." It was wonderful and obviously memorable. He was a disciplinarian when necessary and he held the respect of all of his students because of the way he conducted himself whether in the classroom or just walking the hallways. How I wish those days could be enjoyed for the students of today. I am pleased to see the names of Alice Little, "Miss Little, I am sure must be my seventh grade "7-3" homeroom teacher and Mrs. Sorrells, who was also a seventh grade teacher. Two lovely and respected teachers. I wish you both well. My sincerest memories of appreciation to Mr. Dougherty and my condolences to his family. He gave his heart and soul to the education of so many of us - I am so sorry to learn of his passing but I will certainly recall and treasure those school day memories forever.

Pat was like a father to me all of the time we taught together at Miami Springs. He was a grandfather to my two daughters, Michele and Sharon. He also got to know my Grandchild ,Kayla. After I retired we, Kayla and I, would meet with Pat for breakfast at Denny's each month . After I moved to Weston we sort of lost contact, but spoke on the phone at times. I saw a side to Pat that others sometimes missed. It was his kind soft side, his loving side. We,Michele,Sharon, Kayla, and Dorothy Mazine will miss Pat. We loved him.

Mr. Dougerty was my 7th grade math teacher at then Mia Sprgs jr HS during the eraly 1960's. I went on several of his fishing expeditions on fishing boats with him and others from the classes he taught. I also remember his great St. Patricks Day arguing about kids that wore bright orange. I also remember his old saying " Pals we be, Pals we are, Pals forever your father and me." What a great guy he was. My condolences to his family.
