Walter Bugel Obituary
November 29, 1951 - May 2, 2021
Durham, North Carolina - Walter Joseph Bugel, age 69, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family at Hock Family Pavilion on Sunday, May 2, 2021. He was born on November 29, 1951 to Viola M. Salik and the late Joseph Bugel.
Wally graduated from Virginia Tech with a Bachelor's Degree in Architecture. The early part of his career was involved with architecture firms in Houston while the last 35 years were devoted to the Telecommunications industry.
During his lifetime he had the privilege to be the designer of the War II Guadalcanal American Memorial located on Guadalcanal in the Solomon Islands. He also enjoyed serving as a member of D.A.D. (Durham Area Designers).
Wally attended and volunteered at Faith Alliance Church where he also served as a Trustee. He enjoyed playing golf, softball in the parents league through NJAA, and camping with friends from Houston. Wally was also an avid lover of music and photography.
Wally is survived by his wife, Connie and their 3 daughters: Leslie Huffman (husband, Sean, and son, Brody), Marta Bugel (Michael McDonald) and Meredith Bugel; his mother Viola Bugel and brother Jim Bugel (wife, Lauren, and 2 daughters, Jamie and Madeleine).
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Special Olympics. https://www.specialolympics.org/ As an employee of Verizon he enjoyed volunteering annually with the Durham Special Olympics as a photographer as well as a great hugger.
Due to Covid-19 restrictions, a "Celebration of Life" will be observed at a later date.

I am saddened to hear of Wally's passing. We worked together in NY at Contel/GTE. Over the years we stayed in contact and I once visited Wally while he was still working in Raleigh. Wally gave me a tour of his Corporate HQ and showed me the President's office who had white carpet. We both had a chuckle over that. Wally was always quick with a smile followed by a story. He was a good friend and coworker. I will keep Wally, Connie and their extended family in my thoughts and prayers. God Bless.

Wally was a great guy. I enjoyed working with him for several years at GTE/Verizon. After retirement we enjoyed shooting together in competitive handgun matches. I deeply regret that I hadn’t stayed in touch over the last year. My sincere condolences and prayers go out to Connie, his daughters, and all who loved him. RIP Wally...

Wally was a great friend, I loved our days together in Houston with Connie and all the VA Tech friends, playing V-ball & camping. Wally could always make you laugh and his & Connie’s Halloween costumes were always the best! Wally will be truly missed, So proud and happy as a father and grandfather, he was. My prayers and love goes out to all the family, Connie, the girls and the grand baby.
