Dan Doehring Obituary

DAN ETTER DOEHRING, 60, passed away on Sunday surrounded by his family after a 3-month battle with pancreatic cancer. He was born on June 24th, 1946, in Houston, Texas. He will be deeply missed by his wife of 38 years, Eileen Whiteside Doehring, daughter Danielle Eileen Sellier and her husband Richard Thomas Sellier, sons David Robert Doehring and Douglas Jamison Doehring, granddaughter Kaylie Eileen Sellier, brother Richard Lee Doehring, sister Ann Krenek, sisters-in-law Penny McDill Doehring, Sally Walston Doehring, and Kitty Whiteside, a number of nieces and nephews, and the Harris County Sheriff's Department family. He is preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Sweeney Jamison Doehring, Jr. Dan graduated from Memorial Senior High School in 1965. He then participated in the Army ROTC program at Trinity University, where he would meet the love of his life. He convinced Eileen to marry him in a way only he could have managed, and after they graduated from Trinity they moved on to Fort Eustis, Virginia, where Dan was a 1st Lieutenant in charge of a boat company. In 1972, Dan and Eileen returned to Houston where Dan joined the Harris County Sheriff's Department Reserves. It was during his time with the Reserves that Dan found his true calling as a peace officer, and it was soon after his retirement that he returned to the Reserves. It was also during this time that he took up one of his many passions, hot air ballooning. His aptly named balloon, Almost, almost arrived in time for the Bicentennial. With the birth of his first child in 1974, caring for his family became Dan's first passion; he was the definition of a family man. In addition to being a devoted father and husband, Dan was a retired Captain, a 32-year veteran of the Harris County Sheriff's Department, where he served in the patrol, courts, and jail divisions, among others. A Houston native, Dan's service to his community was based on his love for his hometown and his deeply set roots in the area. Dan retired in January of 2006 and took his entire family on a cruise to Alaska to celebrate. The untimely passing of this incredibly loving and gregarious man with a heart of gold weighs heavily on our hearts eased only by the memories of the precious time spent with him. Visitation with the family will be on Wednesday, June 6, from 5 until 9 PM at the Forest Park Lawndale Funeral Home, 6900 Lawndale Avenue. The funeral service will be at 1 PM on Thursday, June 7th, at the same location with Father Ron Cloutier officiating. Pallbearers will be David Doehring, Richard Sellier, Doug Doehring, Danielle Sellier, Brian Doehring, Ann Krenek, Richard Doehring, Cindy Kellum, Lee Doehring, J Doehring, Chris Doehring. Honorary Pallbearers will be the Deputies of both the Harris County Sheriff's Department and the Harris County Sheriff's Department Reserves. Memorial contributions may be made to the Office of Correctional Ministries c/o Father Ron Cloutier, Harris County Sheriff's Department, 1200 Baker Street, Houston, Texas, 77002.

Not sure what to say?

I was researching my past when I was 20 years old in 1974 and remember how wonderful Dan was to try an idea called "Balloon Promotions" to advertise on hot air balloons. Very fond memories of a very nice man willing to work with a "kid" on an idea. Chris Tyson, Austin

Kaylie's First Picture

Doug Doehring

June 10, 2007

Kaylie Eileen Sellier is Dan's 17-month old granddaughter. She was the light of his life. The picture attached was Kaylie’s first painting. She painted it on her father, Richard Sellier’s, birthday (April 23) which was also the last time Dan was admitted to the hospital. The painting hung in his hospital room, and was always mentioned by Dan whenever anyone came in.

Dan saw many things in the painting which he wanted to share. The pink object in the center is Dan, who is rising to leave. At the base of Dan is Kaylie, to the immediate left of Dan is Eileen, and to the right of the picture is the rest of the family, all trying to keep Dan here. To the far left of the picture is Father Ron, with arms folded, observing and guiding.

The original masterpiece was, at Dan’s request, placed in his casket and buried with him.

I will miss you, Dan. You were always a gentleman, a remarkable thing in our line of work. I knew you for the better part of thirty years, and never heard you speak ill of anyone. You lived, and served your fellow man, with decency and honor. Well done. Now, enjoy the greatest adventure of all...

It was truly a pleaure to work for a commander who treated us like a friend. He cared about his troops. I remember being on a disturbance call in an apartment complex filled with crooks at 2 in the morning, when I called for backup, in walked Captain Doehring. I had nothing but the highest respect for him. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family. May God Bless You.

I was saddened to learn of Dan's passing. He was a great person, a great cop and most of all, a great friend. I worked with him years ago before I left the Houston area and moved to Austin. His personality made him someone you liked, looked up and admired. He will be greatly missed.

Dear Eileen and "the Kids" --
The Doehring Family had such an impact on our family during our years in Houston, and certainly Dan was an nearly epic figure to all of us. The scouting memories are sweet, and we still talk about Dan's amazing demonstration of the "empty" shotgun. Truly a wonderful man, father and husband. Our very best to you as you go through this difficult time.

With love,

I will always remember Dan as a wonderful person who always thought of everyone first before himself. He saw me grown up through the years of his working with my mom at the Capon Dinner and then later when I came to work for the Sheriff's Department. He always had a smile and a hug whenever he saw me. And I know in my heart, the dear Lord has a special place for him now. Please know my prayers and thoughts are with you, his dear family. And he will be sorely missed in my heart and will never be forgotten. May God be with you in the upcoming days and years.

I have known Dan for many years and highly respected him as a person and officer. I have known him both in the regular dept and the sheriff's reserves which dan and I were serving together in the fug. warrant's div till his passing.
It is with deep sadness and i will miss him so much. We have all lost a good friend and wonderful person.
I hope his family knows if there is anything they need , all they have to do will be to ask..

I never had the opportunity to work for Captain Doehring, but I worked in his district on many occassions when he was in IV. Dan always treated me like a friend rather than a subordinate and that was always greatly appreciated. I know his wife and family were the centerpieces of his life and he will be greatly missed by them. I hope they take comfort in knowing that he is at rest with his saviour today.

A great boss, friend and man...

A great boss
I had the opportunity to work for and with Dan. He always encouraged me to work hard and aim high while enjoying the journey. He always made sure our accomplishments were noticed and appreciated. He made the work environment a great place to work.

A great friend
Dan was always there to listen and give one of his famous bear hugs. He was someone you could always count on. If he could help with anything in any way, he did! He was fun, encouraging and loved to laugh, tell jokes and talk about his family and friends.

A great man
There was never a day that went by that he didn't dote on his family. He was a proud family man. I always admired this quality in him. I will never forget how excited he was about taking the family trip to Alaska. He talked about it all of the time. It was nice to see a man so happy to be with his family!

I will never forget the time he sent my Dad to a conference (one he needed to attend) and encouraged my Dad to pay for me to accompany him. He felt so strongly about family ties/bonds, that he wanted to be sure I had quality Father/Daughter time with my Dad. I will always treasure this time I got to spend with my Dad because of him.

I also remember at Christmas time he always took the time to hand-deliver Christmas goodies (Those prailines were delicious by the way!).

These are only a few admirable traits I recognized and appreciated in Dan. I enjoy reflecting on memories and experiences I had while in Dan's presence. He was not only a great boss and friend, but also like a father to me. He may not physically be here with us, but he certainly won't be forgotten!

I will always remember Dan Doehring as a good, kind, generous, and loving friend. Always smiling, always giving. My fondest memory is of the Christmas parties - Eileen you are a saint to have put up with us! May God comfort you and your family on the loss of this dear, dear man. You are in my prayers. Love to you all.

Although we only spent "snapshots" of time together, Mr. Doerhing could always make a sometimes trying day better. He would throw open that door with his smile and hearty "Hello Cass!" and you couldn't help but smile. You are all in my thoughts and prayers. May God hold him in the palm of his hand.

Dearest Captain, what a joy to have been able to work for you for eight 1/2 years. You had a very kind and thoughtful heart and for that I thank you. Won't ever forget the long hours we had to work at the Cook-Off's but had lots of fun with you along side us.
District IV was a great place when you were there. You will be truly missed. You were Boss and friend.

Dan
may have been only one of 4 cousins, but for 60 years, he was more of a
brother whose sense of fair play and humor helped me survive this long.
I won't mentiond what he did at my husband's viewing and then back at
the house after the cemetary to help me survive that ordeal. SENSE OF HUOR heals
all.
Eileen, you are the greatest. You have givien him the direction he
needed and more love than imaginable. Together, you raised the 3
greatest kids in the world. That is the history and legacy.

Dear Eileen, Danielle & Richard, David & Doug,
I am so very sorry for your loss. Since working for Mr. Richard Doehring I have had the pleasure and I mean pleasure of meeting and getting to know all of you. I will miss the phone calls from Mr. Dan asking to speak to his brother and "giving me the day off" before I transferred the call. I always had a laugh when he called. I will also remember the Floral Arrangement that you two brought to the office for me--that was so kind BUT the part I will always will remember is how Mr. Dan made fun of it ! I know you all will take care of each other through this and know that Mr. Dan has touched so many of the people he was around in so many different ways. I am always just a phone call away and know that my family loves each of you !

I knew Captain Doehring through his work at Houston Farm & Ranch Club. What a dedicated man – to his family, his work, his friends. He spoke often of his family, always with a twinkle in his eye. I never saw him treat anyone with less than the utmost respect and that is part of what made him a joy to be around. The world is a better place for having had Captain Doehring, even for a short while, and now he is in heaven, probably trying to keep my husband out of mischief.
