Edward Tye Obituary

Edward Tye
06/27/1931 - 08/10/2025
Dr. Edward James Tye, Colonel U.S. Army age 94 passed away quietly Sunday morning August 10, 2025, at his residence in Sugar Land, Texas.
Edward (Eddie) was born June 27, 1931, in Chicago, Illinois to Edward and Gertrude Tye.
Eddie was the eldest of six children who grew up on the West Side of Chicago on Wilcox Street. The amazing stories of the Tye family's life on Wilcox Street are too numerous to list. Most importantly, it was a home filled with love that exists to this day.
Eddie graduated from St. Mel's High School where he was an "All-star" athlete. He completed his Bachelor of Science at Loyola University – Chicago and went onto to complete his Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) at the University of Illinois.
Edward was drafted into the U.S. Army in the late 1950's. He spent 18 months in Viet Nam as part of the 137th Medical Detachment. He was the recipient of the Bronze Star, National Defense Medal, and the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry. Colonel Tye retired in 1981.
Following his retirement, Dr, Tye became a Professor of Prosthodontics at the University of Texas Health Science Center-Houston. He loved teaching and was very well-liked and respected by students and staff. He retired in 1996.
Edward was a gifted teacher. He was a volunteer for the Fort Bend Literacy Council for over 20 years.
He was an avid cyclist who completed the Texas MS 150. Edward was a certified PADI Master Scuba Diver and traveled the world to exotic diving sites. Ed loved to travel and spent time in over 40 countries. Eddie was the "life of the party". His sense of humor and knack for story telling entertained all he met.
Edward is survived by his four daughters and their spouses: Mary Ann Tye, Susie Barlow (Doug Bailey), Nancy Tye (Michael Nadolny), Dr. Kathleen Tye (Johnny Traweek); grandchildren, Jonas, Mitchell, Omar, Jessica, Shelby, Kassidy, Cameron, Tyler; great grandchildren, Lucas, Sophia, Victor, Connor and Oliver; siblings from Chicago, Joesph Tye, Margie Zuba, Kitty Raucci.
A private service with full military honors will be held on August 21, 2025, at the Houston National Cemetery.

My prayers go out to the Tye family. I have very fond memories of him as my professor in dental school. He was a great teacher and a class act!

I´m so sorry for your loss. I am praying for you all. Please know that your loved one is safe in God´s memory (Proverbs 14:14,15). Just as he brought his son Jesus back to life, he will do the same for your loved one. May God give you comfort and strength to help you cope during this difficult time.

My family also grew up on Wilcox Street and were good friends with the Tye Family. My father was the local milkman. My late brother, Kevin Savage, was best friends with Duke Tye who might have been the youngest Tye. My two younger brothers and myself also graduated from St. Mel. We send condolences to Edward's family, and we will remember Edward in our prayers and at Mass. May he rest in peace.
