John Chase Obituary

John Saunders Chase was born in Annapolis, Maryland, on January 23, 1925.
At the blessed age of 87 years old, Chase went to his final rest on March 29, 2012.
From 1944 to 1946 he served in the United States Army in the Philippine Islands where he saw combat in the Asian theater. He was decorated with the American Theater Ribbon, the Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon, the Philippine Liberation Ribbon and the World War II Victory Ribbon.
In 1948, he earned a Bachelor of Science in Architecture at Hampton University. He went on to become the first African American to enroll in the University of Texas at Austin School of Architecture. He graduated in 1952.
His professional career began that same year when he was appointed assistant professor of architectural drafting at Texas Southern University and founded John S. Chase, A.I.A. Architect, Inc. His early designs included churches, schools, homes and small public buildings.
Chase achieved a number of impressive firsts. He was the first African American licensed to practice architecture in the state of Texas and later was the first African American admitted to the Texas Society of Architects and the Houston Chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA). He also co-founded the National Organization of Minority Architects (NOMA) along with 12 other black architects at the AIA convention in Detroit in 1971. When President Jimmy Carter appointed him in 1980, Chase became the first African American to serve on the United States Commission on Fine Arts. His service on the commission included the creation of the Vietnam War Memorial.
His architectural imprint can be seen globally. He was commissioned to design the United States Embassy in Tunis, Tunisia. He collaborated on the design of the George R. Brown Convention Center and designed the Washington Technical Institute, Links, Inc., National Headquarters, Delta Sigma Theta National Headquarters, and the Harris County Astrodome Renovation. On the campus of Texas Southern University, he designed the Thurgood Marshall School of Law, Sterling Student Life Center and the Martin Luther King, Jr. School of Humanities.
Chase was elected to the AIA College of Fellows, was awarded the AIA Whitney M. Young Citation, and was the recipient of the NOMA Design for Excellence Award for four consecutive years. He received the commendation for Meritorious Service by the Houston Independent School District and the Honor Award for Architectural Excellence in School Design by the Texas Association of School Boards for the design of the Booker T. Washington High School.
Chase was a member of the CIAA hall of fame for both wrestling and football and he was an avid golfer. He was also a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity and the Nu Boule chapter of Sigma Pi Phi Fraternity.
Chase served his community on numerous boards; Hampton University, University of Texas Health Science Center, Hermann Hospital, and Golden State Life Insurance Company. He also served as President of the Houston Club and of the University of Texas Exes.
Chase is survived by his wife Drucie Rucker Chase and his three children John S. Chase, Jr. (Brenda ), Anthony R. Chase (Dina) and Saundria Chase Gray (Jerome); grandchildren Asa Davis, Chase Gray, Jordan Chase, Grace Gray and Abyssinia ("Kat") Chase and nieces and nephews Laura Farley, John Farley, Michael Farley and William Farley.
Visitation will be from 7:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 3, at Antioch Missionary Baptist Church, 500 Clay Street, Houston, Texas. The funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, April 4, at Antioch Missionary Baptist Church.
In lieu if customary remembrances, the family suggests memorial contributions be directed to the John S. Chase endowed scholarship fund at the University of Texas, School of Architecture, 1 University Station B7500, Austin, TX 78712-0222 or Hampton University, Hampton , VA 23668.

To the Chase Family: It's been a long time since I saw Mr. Chase. As a student(coming from a small town of Seguin, Texas) at Texas Southern Univeristy/School of Business in the 1960's, I worked as a work study student under Dr. Milton Wilson, Dean of the School. Dr. Wilson introduced me to Mr. Chase as a student who needed to earn extra income to pay for college expenses. It was during that time that Mr. Chase hired me to work as a student admin. intern in his office. I was so impressed and thankful for this opportunity to know that I would be working for an accomplished, professional individual who happened to be an African American. I am forever in the debt of Mr. Chase for giving me an opportunity to work, but more importantly to know and understand that achievements and accomplishments were possible for us. I know that he paved the road for many in the architectural areas and as a role model for others of what could be achieved.

My deepest sympathy to the family and know that he left a legacy of footprints as a professional and as a human being.

Know that victory lies not at some high point along the way but in having made the journey step by step—a sacred pilgrimage, a sacred journey to life everlasting. God has spoken: Thy Will be Done! The burdens that seemed too heavy to bear are lifted away on the wings of a prayer.

God bless you,
Ella Ann Smith Saine

I have recently learned of the passing of the great John Chase, a Texan who signifid in his being all of the great things that have come from Texas over the past 55 years. Everywhere he went, he was recognized as the giant he was. Andy Anderson of Austin introduced me to Mr. Chase in 1966 in Austin and told me of his many contributions across the state and nation: church buildings, college buildings, other commercial buildings. He will be missed by all of us and his life and contributions will be greatly cherished for years to come.

My sincere condolences to the John Chase Family. He was an extraordinary individual who did a great deal for the community and Houston as a whole. In 1994, when I applied to attend the University of Texas School of Law, I was privileged to have received a letter of recommendation from Mr. Chase. This is a great loss for Houston. My prayers are with the Chase Family.

Drucie, my sincerest condolences to you and your family. At the service I was reminded of what a kind and generous person your husband was when I remembered a time maybe 30 years ago when I first moved back from England and wanted to be an interior designer. I had no training or skills but I just walked into John's office (because I knew he was a family friend) and said I want to be an interior designer! He was so kind. He didn't laugh at me or make me feel silly, he sat down and talked with me probably close to an hour and told me all the type of work it would entail and the education I would need. I could see he had clients waiting, but he never rushed me or or made light of my inquiry. He even offered to assist me in getting into a good design school. He was so kind. You were very blessed indeed.

Godspeed Mr. Chase. You were greatly loved and will be even more greatly missed.

The twinkle in his eye would give his thought away. It would be very difficult not to like John. In spite of all things, his personality would always show through. I served with him on several architectural commissions one of which was the UT Track & Field Stadium, Field House and Parking Garage. UT was his school and he served as it's President of the Alumni Association. Not a bad credential for any UT alumni wouldn't you say? John Chase is a highly respected and loved man who did a great deal in every quarter and especially for God, his family and his country. He has been a mover in architecture, the community and politics and will be missed. RIP John Chase and condolences Drucie, John Jr. and all the Chase Family.

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

Dear Mrs. Chase and Family,
Please accept our deepest condolences on the loss of your husband and father. Mrs. Eleanor Hall Allen, my wife's aunt and mother of my best friend, Hugh, first introduced me to you and Mr. Chase during a Coterie event many, many years ago. We deeply valued your and Mr. Chase's friendship and always enjoyed his ever-present smile.

As a fellow Texas-Ex, I greatly respected and admired the walk he made to obtain his degree at the Forty Acres at such a critical time in our history. Know that you and your family remain in our prayers.

Our Prayers are for the continued support of your family.

To Drucie & the Chase Family;
I can not tell you how proud it made me to first meet and see John Chase, then celebrating his 25th class anniversary at UT. As a young (Black) Architecture student it was encouraging to see him in his signature light grey suit and big smile on his face. It was a pleasure serving with him years later on the AIA Houston Professional Practice Committee in the late 1980's and visiting his Home in 1990. Having grown up in Austin area and Practicing in Houston for more than a decade I have followed much of his life's works for years. Today I will again visit The University of Texas @ Austin and look forward to supporting his Legacy as requested by the Family,

Sicerely,

R. Hill

To the John S. Chase family. Mr. Chase was a mentor, a father figure, a friend, and gave me my first job in Texas. He was an inspiration to all architects, especially young African American architects aspiring to follow in his footsteps. He was someone to look up too and was always there for advice, a pat on the back, and strong encouragement if needed. He meant so very much to me and will be missed. To Mrs. Chase and Family, big hug from the McAfees. May the peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you always.

Most unfortunately I did not have the honor of knowing this gentleman but am awestruck by his life story told in this obituary and the Chronicle article. His biography should be required reading for every child every year of their education from kindergarten through 12th grade. By using his incredible intellegence and perserverance he was able to achieve great success in spite of seemingly insurmountable odds the likes of which one can only imagine. His life serves as an inspiration to us all. What a great, great man. God will reward him greatly.
