Lucile Melcher Obituary

LUCILE B. MELCHER, of Houston, passed away peacefully at her residence on Wednesday morning, the 5th of May 2004. A native Houstonian, she was 92. Lucile Melcher was a Houston philanthropist who supported many worthwhile causes. But to those who knew her, she was so much more than that. Lucile was a smart, tough, hardworking woman, a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend. She loved to paint, to cheer on the Houston Texans, and to dress western at the "Fatstock Show," as she continued to call it. She delighted in her ranch, Mel-Acres, in Chappel Hill and its Dutch Belted cattle. She attended the San Jacinto High School, the University of Tulsa, and had an honorary Doctorate in Humanities from the University of Houston. She will be remembered and missed by all of us who were fortunate to be part of her life. Lucile was preceded in death by her father, Franklin Ovid Birmingham, and her mother, Lida Bell Buckingham. She is also preceded in death by her husband, LeRoy Melcher. They were married 64 years before his passing in 1999. Lucile was by LeRoy's side as he developed the UtoteM convenience store chain and later Ranger Markets. Together the Melchers were major donors to numerous Houston institutions and organizations; including The University of Houston, for which the business school building and public television station, KUHT-TV, are named in their honor. They also supported the Houston Police Department through their involvement with the "100 Club." One of their favorite charities was Rodeo Houston, and they purchased Champion Steers at the Junior Market Steer Auction for more than a decade. They were lifetime members of the rodeo, and Lucile attended almost every Rodeo performance. The Melcher's were contributors to the M. D. Anderson Cancer Center, Rotary International, Child Advocates, the Salvation Army, Citizens for Animal Protection, and MANY others. Lucile continued this philanthropy after her husband's death, and she delighted in being able to help those less fortunate. Much of Houston benefited from her generosity. Lucile is also preceded in death by her two sons, LeRoy Melcher Junior, who died in 1981 and Julius Frank Melcher, who died in 1993. Lucile is survived by her loving daughter, Yvonne Melcher and fiancé, Magic Schwarz; and by daughter-in-law, Janice Dougall Melcher. She is also survived by 8 grandchildren including LeRoy Melcher III and wife, Janet, Pete Melcher, Marc Melcher, Frank Melcher and wife Leigh-Leigh, JoAnn Porter and husband, Randy, Dodd Melcher and wife, Michelle, Trey Melcher and Cody Melcher. She is survived by 13 great-grandchildren whom she loved to spoil; Katie, Paul, Max, Jennifer, Claire, Grace, Chase, Dominique, Lily, Hoyt, Kaylee, Lundy and Wiley. She is known to most of her family simply as "Mama." The Melcher family desires to acknowledge and express their special thanks to those who cared for and helped Lucile; especially, Blanca Fuentes, Norman Marshall, Penny McKee, Bill Lewis, and Richard Kerr. Lucile was truly grateful for all she had and tried to express her thanks by helping others. The family is greatly saddened by her passing, but thrilled to have known, loved, and been loved by this extraordinary woman. A memorial service will be conducted at three o'clock in the afternoon on Monday, the 10th of May 2004, in the Jasek Chapel of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive in Houston, with Mr. James L. Patterson as Reader. At the conclusion of the services, the family will receive friends during a reception at Geo. H. Lewis & Sons and a trio from Moores School of Music will perform.

Dear Mrs. Melcher,

Now that you are in Heaven with Mr.Melcher and your son LeRoy, you'll have a chance to catch up with my grandparents who you haven't seen in a while, John and Mildred Baird. You'll be able to confirm or debate the wild and crazy stories told to you by my dad of his and "El Roy's" crazy adventures in school.

I'm so glad that you and I got to know each other. Giving the party for Marc's birthday put a smile back on his face. He loves you so much and misses you terribly. Truly, you have been his rock during this horrible time in his life.

Even in death, you went with style. Your funeral was beautiful and standing room only!!

Love,

Lacy Baird

Mrs. Melcher was always such a special lady to me. She was smart as a whip, strong - and at the same time, gracious, generous and thoughtful. What a wonderful sense of humor she had.

I was honored to attend the rodeo with her on March 17th of this year. It was the first time I had been in about 15 years. It was special that night, and it is a treasure now.

My sympathy and heartfelt thoughts to Evie and the rest of the family. One of the most precious jewels in Houston has gone on to stir up things in a better place.

I'll miss you, Mrs. Melcher.

WHAT A GREAT TEXAS LADY. HER SUPPORT OF THE HOUSTON LIVESTOCK SHOW AND RODEO WILL BE MISSED, BUT HER MANY CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE YOUTH OF TEXAS FOR BETTER EDUCATION WILL BE REMEMBERED FOR A LONG TIME. SHE MADE HOUSTON A BETTER PLACE FOR ALL OF US.

I had the opportunity to meet Mr & Mrs. Melcher in Chappell Hill back in 1996 at the mexican restuarant that had just opened there(which is now another business). And I thought they were the sweetest couple you would ever meet and be glad to say you knew. They were both so very caring and will be truly missed by many.

I knew Mrs. Melcher when I was working at First City Bank of Highland Village. The whole family were so nice to me. She will be missed. I thank God that I got to know Lucile Melcher. Mr and Mrs Melcher were so nice to everyone at First City. We are praying for you and your family.

Many years ago, I worked in the office for Utotem stores. One summer, the Melchers had the 'annual picnic' at Mel-Acres. They were unbelievable hosts. I will never forget how gracious Mrs. Melcher was by allowing many of us ladies to take a tour of her beautiful ranch house. She took us to all the rooms and treated us like old friends. They were truly wonderful people.

You were the only grandmother I have ever known. I will never forget all of the wonderful things that you did for others. You are an inspiration. I send my love and condolences to Yvonne, Cody, Trey, and the rest of the Melcher family

There are so many things we will miss about you, Lucile. Your wit, your charm, wonderful sense of humor, steadfast faith, generous spirit and love of life, to name a few. Most of all, we will miss you - the quintessential Lucile. Thank you for many wonderful memories. I am blessed to have known you. - John
