HOWARD M. HAVENS

Oct. 1, 1927 – Feb. 23, 2025

Howard was born on October 1, 1927, in Inglewood, CA and passed away in El Centro February 23, 2025, at the age of 97. His family relocated to the Imperial Valley from El Segundo when he was 6 months old. He was the grandson of early pioneer John Havens, who settled in the Imperial Valley in 1901.

He graduated from Imperial High School in 1946, where he served on the student council and played softball and basketball. He continued his education, at the time known as Central Jr. College and now known as IVC. He drove a school bus for Imperial and El Centro School Districts while attending school and during the summer months of high school and junior college, he worked at IID. During WWII he served as a volunteer member of the Aircraft Warning Service on the weekends. Upon graduating from IVC he went back to work for IID until he joined the U.S. Naval Reserve as a SeaBee and served on active duty on the island of Bermuda from 1951 to 1953. Upon his return to Imperial, he returned to work for IID and retired with 46 years of service.

Howard was married to Carolyn for 65 years and they had 2 children, Gary and Nancy, 3 grandchildren, and 5 great-grandchildren.

He was involved in Little League, was a high school football official with the Imperial Valley Football Association and enjoyed traveling with Carolyn.

He was preceded in death by his wife, both children, parents, and a brother. He is survived by a son-in-law, daughter-in-law, a nephew, and numerous cousins.

Graveside service will be held March 10, 2025, at 10 a.m. at Evergreen Cemetery in El Centro, CA. The family would like to thank the staff of Heart & Hand in El Centro for their compassionate and loving care of Howard.
