Timothy Quish Obituary

Timothy Samuel Quish, age 55, died unexpectedly on Friday, Aug. 14, 2009, at Lee Memorial Hospital in Ft. Myers, Fla., where he was airlifted after sustaining a head injury.

Tim is the son of Raymond T. Quish and Rosalind Turkington Quish of Manchester, both of whom are deceased. He is survived by his sister, Sheleen Quish (spouse: Franklin Mallinder) of Henderson, Nev.; Peter Quish (spouse: Meg Malone Quish) of Baltimore, Md.; Thomas Quish (spouse: Sylvia Kraemer) of Midlothian, Va.; nine nieces and nephews, Caroline Raimondo Quish, loving wife of Raymond T. Quish, and his former wife of 10 years, Cary Godbey Turner of Nantucket, Mass. He is predeceased by his older brother, Michael T. Quish.

Tim was a 1972 graduate of East Catholic High School in Manchester, where he was senior class president and a star basketball player on the state championship team. The 1971-72 team defeated Harding High School by the score of 45-42 to win the state finals. That year Tim was the second leading scorer on the team with 311 points for almost 13 points per game average.

Tim was also a post-graduate student at Loomis Chaffee School in Windsor during the 1972-1973 school year and was an instrumental member of their basketball team. Accepting a full scholarship to William Penn College in Oskaloosa, Iowa, Tim continued to play basketball and graduated in 1977.

Tim's love of life, irresistible charm, piercing blue eyes, and ability to create a party wherever he went became the foundation for a lifetime career in the food and beverage industry, where he performed virtually all roles at one time or another. The highlights of his career were the years he worked at The Opera House and 21 Federal where he was known as the "Silver Fox" in the 1980s and in the 1990s when he and his former wife Cary owned and operated one of the most tony restaurants on Nantucket, The Westender, entertaining Nantucket's summer families and celebrities, alike.

In 2002, Tim made Florida his new home and became well known in Naples' marquee establishments. He dabbled in modeling, landing in the cover story of Coastal Living magazine in 1998.

He will be missed by all who knew him and loved him. We know he is hosting a wonderful gala in the next life!

A private memorial service will be held at a future date.

Condolences may sent to his family through John F. Tierney Funeral Home, Manchester, Connecticut 06040 or online at

Dear Quish Family:
I found out today of Tim's passing - read it in the ECHS Eagle. I am shocked and saddened. I have many great memories of "Swish McQuish" - here are a couple:
Tim giving up his star status senior year in high school to be more of a complementary player - without that sacrifice there would have been no State championship - for someone used to being in the limelight he gave it up so the team could win. I will never forget his winning hoop against archrival South in the tourney.
I remember visiting my girl friend at U of Rhode Island in the 70's - Tim had just transferred there and did not really know anyone. We were in the cafeteria and I noticed him sitting all by himself. When he got up to bring his food tray back, every girl stopped what they were doing and just stared - must have been 200 of them - one of the most impressive walks I have ever witnessed!
Tim - you were special - I will never forget you - you and your family are in my prayers.

Tommy and the Quish family,
I find it very difficult to believe that Tim has passed on. I am so sorry for your tremendous loss. My memories are so vivid, just as his blue eyes were. My memories go back to St. James School and then meeting him again one evening at the opening of the Westender Resturant on Nantucket. That was such a plesant surprise. There were family lmembers present that eveing as well.
I hope that the good memories serve you all well and you find some peace in your hearts.
Love,
Betsy Poutre Vogel

Have been thinking of Tim for several days now. Many things to say but I thought the attached picture of the ST James BBall team would be of interest. We( Brian, Ken, John, Marc, Ron and Tommy were 8th graders, the "old" guys. Tim, was our Captain, largely because we respected, liked him and he was the best player. Tim took that helm without ego, it was his core. He was a leader, even in the 7th grade. In this age of Facebook and reconnection I have great regret of never reconnecting with Tim in adult hood. I have many fond memories of Tim, both on and off the court. There is a great deal of truth to the adage "you make your best friends in 7th and 8th grade".

I was a painfully shy teenager at East Catholic. One of the few people who took notice of me was Tim Quish. He was handsome and flirtatious. A wink from him and that adorable grin was enough to make my day! News of his death comes as a shock. My sympathies to all of his family and friends.

Shelly, Peter, & Tom, I can't express the shock and sympathy I have. As you well know, we went all the way back to St James together. It was always a fun time at "The Quishes". I will never forget the best times of our lives. RIP Tim ~

Shelly, Peter and Tom:
Sorry about Tim, he was fun to grow up with and he always had fun things to do, like B-B gun fights on the great lawn among the specimen trees planted by the Cheneys. My thoughts and prayers
are with you all.

Dear Quish family,

Please accept my sympathy on the loss of Tim. I went to St. James School and East Catholic with Tim. He was always a sweetheart and heartthrob! He was so open and nice to everyone he met.

I fondly remember a time during our Senior year at East. He was class president and I was the vice-president. It was the famous "Magazine Drive" and our Skit for the rally involved Tim as tarzan and me as Jane. We both swung on a gym rope landing in the middle of the gym. My wig fell off and caused an uproar of laughter from the assembly!

May your memories of Tim and his life lighten your grief in the days ahead. You are all in my thoughts and prayers.

Sincerely,
Marian Humphrey
