Joseph Wally Obituary

Joseph H. Wally, Jr., better known as Jack, died July 13, 2006 at home, being 93 years old. In a detailed written request he expressed the wish that there be no funeral or flowers. The family wishes to thank the wonderful caregivers of Kansas City Hospice requests that any donations be made to Kansas City Hospice in his name. He also asked for cremation and disposition in a specified location at a later date. Jack was born in Kansas City on June 29, 1913. After graduating from the School of Journalism at the University of Missouri in Columbia, he became a press photographer for the Los Angeles Examiner. In 1938 he returned to Kansas City to become the chief photographer of the Kansas City Journal-Post and handled occasional assignments for LIFE Magazine. His father, Joe Wally, owned Western Blue Print Co. and prevailed on Jack to work for him "for a short time". His tenure at Western Blue Print turned out to last for years. Jack bought the company and ultimately sold it to his three sons. While at Western Blue Print, Jack started designing and selling huge industrial cameras to solve the needs of the reprographic industry. Many of these were purchased well beyond the blue print industry by companies such as General Motors, Ford Motor Co., Boeing, Lockheed Martin and every major company in the petroleum industry, as well as the military services. Those successes were surprising as Jack had no background in engineering, although he held over 40 U.S. and foreign patents. In 1978, Jack began to apply his optical technology to the Graphic Arts industry by designing a step-and-repeat camera, which, for the first time, made onepiece film "flats" for printing books, magazines, canned food labels and other similar items printed on large lithographic presses in color. These cameras, sold under the Opti-Copy trademark, saturated the printing industry in the U.S. and Canada and were widely used in Europe, Australia and Japan. Most of the national magazines in all of those areas employed Opti-Copy devices. Over 2,000 of these units were assembled in a new plant at 110th and Lackman Road in Lenexa which was visited by printers from all over the world. Forty of the largest publishers in Japan flew to Kansas City as a group to witness a demonstration at the Opti-Copy facility. He also had a great sense of humor, loved life and was a great Dad to his three sons. Jack was preceded in death by his parents Joseph and Edna Wally. Survivors include two sons in the Kansas City area, Joseph H. Wally III and J. Christopher Wally, daughter-in-law Susan Wally, and Dr. John W. Wally, MD, who lives in Sedona, Arizona, a sister, Mrs. John Dienner, Jr., of Bethesda, Maryland, two grandchildren, two greatgrandchildren and several nieces and nephews. (Arrangements: D.W. Jack was my most faithful friend and mentor, in easy times as well as hard. I spoke with him last on July 8th and he lapsed into a pensive silence that was not customary for him. He and I both knew it was the last time we would speak. I cannot begin to list all that Jack taught me. He always was upright and honorable in all his dealings and a source of reliable advice in perplexing circumstances.

I remember Jack in endless mental anecdotes - my boys and I often use his amusing mannerisms and turns of phrase.

He and I traveled together and I remember our capers in Paris with especial fondness - in short, he was a riot, and a charming one at that.

Jack and I were in the National Archives of Sweden, looking at pictures of late King Gustav. "I photographed His Majesty," Jack told the archivist. "Oh no Jacky, you couldn't have done - he was before the war." "Yes, I photographed him in 1934!" No-one could have guessed Jack was in his mid-80s already; he was full of life and vigor.

Jack was very kindly to me, Deborah, our boys and latterly to DeeAn. We miss him and he will live on in our memories, which will influence forthcoming generations for good.

What a good man, what a good life - the world is a better place for Jack Wally's having lived in it.

We missed the passing of Jack Wally but enjoyed seeing the tribute to his life in the KC Star this Sunday. It captured the essence of his life.

We will miss Jack; he was a good friend and a wonderful man. We got to know Jack while working with him at Opti-Copy. Everything he undertook was a success and his creative energy for developing new photographic systems will be missed.

Our deepest sympathies go to his family and friends,

Daryl Farr and family

Chris, Joe and John, I am truly sorry about your Dad but he is now with my Jack reminisicing about the good old days at Western Blue. It was wonderful to see him at Jack's visitation and I thank you Chris for bringing him. Your Dad will always be an unforgettable legend in the history of camera technology.

Love, Lynn Porter

I am greatly saddened by this news and wish to convey to the entire family my deepest sympathy. Jack was a true friend to me. I always enjoyed visiting with Jack and never came away from our conversations without some bit of information or advice which I would value for the rest of my life. He and I shared a love of steam locomotives. One of my treasures is a downsized original mechanical draft drawing of a steam loco which Jack made on his cameras at OptiCopy from the original in a museum in Nebrasaka. It hangs in my office and is a reminder of my many years of a great friendship. Jack was a true renaissance man and will be greatly missed.
