Dear Mrs. Epstein and David:
It was with great sadness and the fondest memories that I heard of Dick’s passing from my parents. Aside from my own father, I cannot recall a man I more greatly admired from my childhood that Dick Epstein. Most dads of kids our age merely tolerated our presence as we young boys ran around their homes, disturbing their peace; not at the Epstein house. Through my friendship with David, I had regular exposure to a man was enormously and amazingly engaging with young people. Every time this 10-year old was at his house, I was met with a hearty handshake, a smile and a gracious welcome. As a guest of the Epsteins, I attended the American Royal for the first time where Dick taught us about Hackney horses and how to pronounce the breed name of all-white “Charolais” cattle. I felt honored to be privy to the unique device he used to punch holes in his cigars (very similar to the one I use on my own cigars even today!)

At the Epstein dinner table, young people were engaged in conversation about current events and school. It seemed, invariably we’d be contestants in a game or 20 questions or the Dick Epstein Quiz: Who was the governor of Kansas? How many members are in the House of Representatives? Who came first Mozart or Strauss?

To this day, another generation and a half (first, my nieces and nephews and now, my own children and all of their friends) have been quizzed -- a la Dick Epstein -- during carpool and dinner-time. It doesn’t just keep them busy, it’s a great deal of fun for everyone, and we literally owe it all to Mr. Epstein.

Not long after I considered running for election to the Prairie Village city council, my dad mentioned that Dick Epstein had once served on the council. For both of us, Dick’s participation gave legitimacy and credibility to that governing body. I’m honored to share with him service to Prairie Village through membership to the City Council.

My life is richer for having known Richard Epstein, David and his family.

Richard Epstein was a great great man. As an insurance agent I dealt with him concerning insurance, but the coversation always involved family and music.
He had a positive outlook on life that was 2nd to none. Our hearts go out to Mrs. Epstein and the whole family.

Dear Mrs. Epstein and David-

It was with great sadness that I learned of Mr. Epstein's death. I will remember him fondly as a warm and kind man, always so welcoming when I came to your home, and always deeply interested in what we were up to in high school. (much to your chagrin then, David!) He had a delightful smile, and a way of making you feel very important when he was talking to you. It made a lasting impression on me as a teenager.

I know he will be sorely missed, and I offer you and your family my sincere condolences.

Best regards,

Meg (Schultz) Reznicek
